clean energy
RUNA
Runa is a new beverage company that makes drinks from a little-known leaf that grows deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon: Guayusa (gwhy-you-sa)
Runa provides you with clean energy. It puts you in the right
state of mind to actively appreciate and love everything you do.
It is a smooth, sustainable and smart beverage option.
Runa began when Tyler and Dan teamed up with Amazonian
communities to share guayusa with the world. Tyler first drank
guayusa while conducting linguistic research in the Amazon,
and partnered with Dan in a business class during their last
semester at Brown University to create their vision for Runa.
The duo moved to Ecuador in 2009 to build the world’s first
value chain for guayusa, and are committed to their mission of
creating livelihoods for indigenous Amazonian farmers.

Guayusa: The Amazonian Super Leaf
Guayusa (gwhy-you-sa) is a super leaf found only in the Amazonian rainforest in Ecuador. Brewed like tea, guayusa offers clean, focused energy by balancing as much caffeine as coffee with twice the antioxidants of green tea. There are no tannins in the guayusa leaf, so it lacks the bitter taste associated with some green or black teas.
Amazonian hunters drink guayusa to make them more acutely aware and focused before going hunting at night in the jungle. Guayusa is also enjoyed by indigenous families before dawn, when they awaken to share dreams, myths, and legends. This super leaf is exclusively produced by indigenous farming families, and grown in diverse forest gardens called “chacras.” Producing guayusa creates an economic incentive to protect the rainforest.

Guayusa Health BenefitsTwice the Antioxidants of Green Tea Guayusa is revered in the Amazon as an immune system booster, digestive aid, and appetite suppressant, in addition to a wide variety of other health benefits.
As Much Caffeine As A Cup Of Coffee Guayusa contains the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. There’s a lot to love about caffeine, and research continues to show its ability to improve mental sharpness, memory and overall brain function.

The Future of Energy
Hydration
Energy
In the same way that all natural coconut water has taken market share from artificial sports drinks, Runa, with our simple, functional, all natural ingredient guayusa, will take market share from mainstream, artificial energy drinks.
RUNA
Runa is a hybrid organization with both for profit and non--profit branches. Rather than being a charity, we are using markets to solve critical social and environmental prob-lems in one of our world’s most important ecosystems. We are creating sustained value for tropical forests, and ensuring that local communities benefit from this new value.
Maria Grefa’s family used to make less than $2 per day from logging and migrant labor. By selling organic guayusa to Runa, her family and over 2,000 others have been able to raise their income by more than 30% each. This addi-tional income is used to buy food and pay for their chil-dren’s’ education. With all of the new trees these families are planting, they will more than triple their annual income within three years.

Meet Runa’s Founders
TYLER GAGE
DAN MACCOMBIE
Co-Founder & Co-CEO
Co-Founder & Co-CEOFrom an early age, Dan had developed a deep interest in ecosystems and all of the unique ways the humans are tied to them. He carried this passion with him to Brown University, where he studied and researched conservation and biology. Although he grew up outside of Cleveland, Dan traveled the world extensively and a 3-month trip to Latin America during college was pivotal in the course of his studies and his life. He immediately connected with the rich culture and landscape of the Ecuadorian Amazon, and dedicated himself to supporting forests and the need to preserve and enhance the livelihoods of those who lived there. For his work, Dan was named a Forbes “30 under 30” in the January 2013 issue. Dan lives in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn and enjoys music in all forms, hiking, scuba diving and exploring all corners of Brooklyn and NYC.
Tyler was born and raised just outside of Berkeley, California. After his freshman year at Brown University, Tyler was given the unique opportunity to study Amazonian plants and languages in South America, and he soon became fascinated by the richness of the native culture and their relationship with the rainforest. He spent the better part of three years living throughout the Upper Amazon, and developed a passion for working with the indigenous communities to create new value for their traditions and environment. He did just that when co-founded Runa. Having turned down a Fulbright scholarship in order to dedicate himself fully to Runa, Tyler loves sharing guayusa and believes deeply in the transformative power of Runa’s work. Tyler was named a Forbes “30 Under 30” in the January 2013 issue in recognition of Runa’s success. In his free time, Tyler enjoys playing soccer, frisbee, practicing yoga, traveling, and eating good food. He currently lives in Brooklyn, NY.
