“If we wish to serve God and
love our neighbor well, we must
manifest our joy in the service we
render to Him and them.
Let us open wide our hearts.
It is a joy which invites us.
Press forward and fear nothing!"

Our Mission Statement
We, the parishioners of Saint Katharine Drexel Parish,
serve Southeast Washington County with a spirit of
welcome, compassion and charity.
We are a community rooted in the Eucharist
and nourished by the Sacraments.
We come together to joyfully celebrate our faith in
prayer and worship, respecting our spiritual diversity
and cultural heritage. We are sent forth from this
Eucharistic community, in response to the call of Jesus
our Savior, to reach out to youth, families, elderly, and
all those in need in our parish, communities and
beyond. In the pioneering spirit of our patroness, we
offer support through witness, prayer and good works,
and we embrace the challenges and opportunities of
what it means to be a Christian
in an ever-changing world.

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 4
Dear Friends in Christ:
As we hear the Gospel at Mass this
weekend, Jesus points to the important
practice of the virtue of humility to ensure that
pride (one of the Seven Capital or Deadly Sins)
does not grasp hold of our hearts. The word:
humility, comes from the Latin: humus and
when translated literally means: “earth.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church
reminds us that humility is the virtue by which a Christian
acknowledges that God is the author of all good. Humility avoids
inordinate ambition or pride, and provides the foundation for
turning to God in prayer. Humility is the foundation of prayer
(CCC 2559).
As a moral virtue, humility helps us to be honest about
our abilities and achievements in life and to avoid becoming self-centered. Christian humility helps us to
recognize that we are always dependent on God and that we should offer praise to God for the good that we do.
People who are humble continuously thank God for the gifts and talents given by the Lord. The practice
of Christian humility is a sincere desire to imitate Christ whose life was one of humility. Jesus only wanted to do
God the Father’s will and to please him in all things.
The Gospel challenges us to look at ourselves and the way we approach our daily living and to ensure
that we root out all pride and selfishness which condition us to view our gifts and talents as if they are our own
without realizing the need to use them for service of God and each other.
Our lives will only have meaning when we are sincere in our relationship with God. It is important to
practice the Christian virtue of humility if we are to be true to ourselves and to God for humility is a key which
opens to us the gates of heaven.
“Do you wish to raise yourself? Begin by humbling yourself.
Are you dreaming of building an edifice that will tower to the skies?
Begin by laying the foundation of humility.”
~ Saint Augustine of Hippo~

Prayer of Blessing for Students and Teachers
Many students and teachers will be returning to the classrooms for
another year of educational opportunities. Consider offering this prayer together
with and for your children, grandchildren and godchildren and any teachers in
your family:
Lord God,
your Spirit of wisdom fills the earth and teaches us your ways.
Look upon these students. Let them enjoy their learning and take delight in new discoveries.
Help them to persevere in their studies and give them the desire to learn all things well.
Look upon these teachers, administrators and support staff.
Let them strive to share their knowledge and gifts and talents with gentle patience
and endeavor always to bring the truth to eager minds.
Grant that students and teachers alike may follow Jesus Christ, the way, the truth, and the life,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

well as her enthusiasm for ministry. Marita’s new position will be to direct
important evangelization and faith formation efforts at the parish, school, college and university levels
throughout the entire Diocese of Pittsburgh. This is a newly created position in ministry to help support the
priority that evangelization and faith formation must have for the growth of the Catholic faith and is titled:
“The Leaven Initiative.” We extend to Marita our prayerful best wishes and thank her for the pioneering

Parish News
The members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas No. 1675 would like express their sin-
cere gratitude and thanks to the parishioners of the Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, who helped
fill 100 ditty bags for the veterans, men, women and children who take shelter at the Washing-
ton City Mission.
The ladies of the court would also like to thank the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5826, who
donated the draw-string cinch bags, which were an integral part of the project.
Although the ladies spearheaded this project with the simple intention of helping their brothers
and sisters in need, they were honored to recently win a state CDA award. Their project, which
is now being considered for a national CDA award, was selected because it represented a true
community project.
