History

Initially, the day of St. Patrick was a Catholic holiday in honor of this

Irish saint.

It was celebrated only in Ireland since before

the seventeenth century.

The first parade held to honor this holiday took

place not in Ireland but in the United States. The March 17, 1762, Irish

soldiers, who served in the English army, marched through New York City.

Today, it is the oldest civilian parade in the world

and the largest in the United States, which has millions of participants; it became popular and has

arrived at many corners of the world.
