The dust had cleared awaywhen the hremen readied the place. There was no fire to be seen then. Infront of the house there was the soundof glas3 falling and people were rushingin night clothes in horror from thedoors and appealing piteously from thewindows for help. The explosion awokethe guests in the front part of the houseand by the time tho firemen reached thescene they were ready to be taken fromthe windows. The firemen, with torchand lantern, entered the hotel.

First to demand attention of the am-bulance corps was Michael C. Burges, who was walking down Lawrence streetopposite thoTiotel when the explosionoccurred. The flying glass cut himabout the head and face iu a frightfulmanner. His injuries are very serious, though not necessarily fatal. He is apainter from Custer City, S. D.

Bud Hopkins, a at the-Gumry- ,

was found on the ground floorof the hotel unconscious and bleedingfrom many cuts. His injuries are notserious.

Joe Munal was found in the basementdressed only in his underclofhes andvas completely covered with ashes ariddirt.

Editor Pnrcoll's Story.W. G. Purcell and wife of Broken

Bow, Xeb., slept in room 17. Mr. Par-ce- ll

"with a smothered feeling. I felt aroundand found that the bed clothing wascovered with mortar and several incheiof dmst. I jumped up at the same timehat the transom fell down with a loudreport and effectually shut ua in. I thensmashed the window in order to getsome air, and saw the debris on thetreet below. I did not feel any up-

heaval and experienced no injury. Mr.wid Mrs.Puxcell escaped by the stairway.

The hotel was divided about the cen-- &r

by a rotunda or court running to thstop of the building, though covered aftthe second floor. The building had beensplit in two at this point or division, and the entire five stories back of tharotunda wore thrown into a shapelessmass in the alley. Five stories of brick'and wood and iron, with the. human occupants, were made a more hean ofdeath-containin- g ruins. The fragmentsof the wreck on Lawrence street towered up into the air, dark and vawnincr.while a great section of roof hung in 'threatening suspension over the chaosbelow. Out of the pile of brick, woodand iron below there came feeble moansand piteous cries for help.

A fireman clambering up the mountain of ruins felt his feet crunch arainsthuman flesh. He reached down andtouched with his hand an arm protruding from the mass beneath him. Therestill seemed to be no fire. The blazehad been smothered by the falling building, and the firemen devoted their efforts to the work of rescue. And thensuddenly the flames broke out and the--

workers were driven nrniv nrlvoices ceased to cry for help. The greatmass was from that moment nothingbut a grave.

Tivo Codies Taken Out.Five bodies have been recovered.

Judge James Glynn, whose name is inthe list of missing, had a room at thehotel, but it is not positively known
