Si has estado en nuestra parroquia,

entonces has presenciado el trabajo de la Sociedad del Altar de primera mano.

“Cada función que tenemos en la iglesia, alguien de la Sociedad del Altar está ahí, trabajando,” dice Rosemary Sellers, presidenta del

ministerio de St. Michael.Actualmente hay 50 miembros, y cualquier

mujer mayor de 18 años puede unirse. El grupo se reúne a las 9 a.m. cada segundo miércoles en la sala Ewing.

If you’ve been to our parish, then you’ve

witnessed the work of the Altar Society firsthand.

“Every function we have at church, someone from the Altar Society is there, working,” says Rosemary Sellers, president of the St. Michael’s ministry.

There are currently 50 members, and any woman 18 or older may join. The group meets at 9 a.m. every second Wednesday in the Ewing Room.

The Altar Society provides all the necessary items for the altar, such as linens, vestments, hosts, wine and some candles. They also oversee the ordering of the altar flowers. They recently purchased a full set of vestments for the liturgical year.

“When we see a need, we try to help out,” Rosemary says.

Stewardship: A Need to Give

When the church needs a new roof or the local food bank needs donations, we jump at the chance to

give for the sake of the need. It’s part of our human nature — we identify a need, and we want to give of our time, talent, and treasure to help.

But as a stewardship people, we are called to give of ourselves not simply because the Church has needs, but because each of us has a need to give. As fellow members of the Body of Christ, created in God’s image, we should strive to go beyond simply co-existing with one another on earth. The life we live should be fueled by love for each other. This love should dictate how we live — by giving of ourselves.

Jesus Christ showed us the perfect example of this self-giving love when He died on the cross. His death was a completely selfless act. He gave of Himself for our sake, offering us — through that gift — life everlasting.

As Christ’s disciples, we follow His example, and we give of ourselves for the sake of others, out of love and an inherent need to give.

That’s not to say that we gain nothing through our gifts. In fact, in His goodness, God sees to it that we do. Most of us have experienced what happens when we give of our time, talent, or treasure. We feel as though we get more out of it than we give. If you speak to someone who serves at the soup kitchen or someone who has made it a regular practice to tithe to the Church, you are likely to find that he or she feels blessed to be able to give.

Don’t wait to find out if there is a need — give of yourself right now. You will be richly blessed for doing so.

Mayordomia: Una Necesidad de Dar

Cuando la iglesia necesita un nuevo techo o el banco de alimentos local necesita donaciones, aprovechamos la

oportunidad para dar por el bien de la necesidad. Es parte de nuestra naturaleza humana: identificamos una necesidad y queremos dar nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro para ayudar.

Pero como personas encargadas de la mayordomía, estamos llamados a darnos a nosotros mismos no solo porque la Iglesia tiene necesidades, sino porque cada uno de nosotros tiene una necesidad de dar. Como compañeros miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, creados a la imagen de Dios, debemos esforzarnos por ir más allá de la simple coexistencia entre nosotros en la tierra. La vida que vivimos debe ser alimentada por el amor mutuo. Este amor debe dictar cómo vivimos, dándonos a nosotros mismos.

Jesucristo nos mostró el ejemplo perfecto de este amor abnegado cuando murió en la cruz. Su muerte fue un acto completamente desinteresado. Se entregó a sí mismo por nuestro bien, ofreciéndonos, a través de ese don, la vida eterna.

Como discípulos de Cristo, seguimos su ejemplo y nos damos a nosotros mismos por el bien de los demás, por amor y por una necesidad inherente de dar.

Eso no quiere decir que no ganemos nada a través de nuestros dones. De hecho, en su bondad, Dios se encarga de que lo hagamos. La mayoría de nosotros hemos experimentado lo que sucede cuando damos nuestro tiempo, talento o tesoro. Sentimos que obtenemos más de lo que damos. Si habla con alguien que sirve en el comedor o alguien que ha hecho una práctica regular de diezmar a la Iglesia, es probable que descubra que él o ella se sienten bendecidos por poder dar.

No espere a descubrir si hay una necesidad, concédase ahora mismo. Serás ricamente bendecido por hacerlo.

A Letter From Our Pastor Una carta de nuestro pastor

When Katharine Lee Bates composed the poem “America” — which

would form the lyrics to the beloved song “America the Beautiful” — she drew her inspiration from her experiences during a cross-country trip in the summer of 1893. The trip’s highlight came when she reached the pinnacle of Pikes Peak in Colorado, and could gaze upon range after range of the Rocky Mountains on one side and the expanse of the Great Plains on the other.

Moved by the vistas around her and the varied features of America she had seen, an idea for a poem and some of its words formed in her mind atop the mountain. That night, back in her hotel room, she completed the poem.

I think the reason for the popularity of “America the Beautiful” is that it combines several themes into one coherent whole. The beauty and immensity of America’s natural creation, the rich abundance of our harvests, and the recognition of God’s generosity are woven together. The final product forms a hymn of thanksgiving for our land that goes beyond national pride to prayer, for God is the spiritual source for all the goodness we have.

I think it’s a suitable theme for July, the month we celebrate Independence Day, our national holiday. Thankfulness, after all, is the basis of stewardship, the recognition that we’ve been given all we have. We’re then responsible to the Giver for the use we make of His gifts.

Let us receive these gifts — the time, talent, and treasure entrusted to us — with thanksgiving. Let us offer praise to the Father of mercies for them, and let us use them in His service.

Cuando Katharine Lee Bates compuso el poema “América”, que formaría la letra

de la querida canción “América la bella”, se inspiró en sus experiencias durante un viaje a través del país en el verano de 1893. Parish Religious Education a Blessing for the Swain Family

For Matthew and Jennifer Swain to hear their son, Kenneth, return from PRE and say “I love being Catholic

and I love PRE” certainly meant a lot. The couple echoes that sentiment as they have found a great sense of community and a continued love for their Catholic faith at St. Michael’s. The Swain family became members about two years ago, after moving to the area from Fayetteville.

“There is a closeness and a community here that I have not experienced before,” Jennifer says. “The people here are just wholeheartedly good.”

PRE classes begin for kindergarten students and continue until Confirmation. Classes are held Wednesday nights during the school year from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Some parents will stay to help with the monthly Youth Mass meal or attend a parent meeting. The couple’s children — Kenneth, 8, and

Karson and Kimberly, both 6 — all attend classes. They also have a son named Kaleb who is 1 year old.

“Praying with their peers has become normal to them,” Jennifer says. “This is important in the world we live in.”

Jennifer loves how the students learn about the weekly readings and homily through crafts and classroom teaching.

“The kids are the best refresher for me of the readings or the homily,” Jennifer says.

The Swains are thankful for the formation opportunities provided through PRE.

“This program has blessed our family in so many ways,” she says.

La Educación Religiosa de la Parroquia es una Bendición para la Familia Swain

Para Matthew y Jennifer Swain escuchar a su hijo, Kenneth, regresar de PRE y decir “Me encanta ser

Católico y amo PRE” sin duda significó mucho. La pareja se hace eco de ese sentimiento ya que ha encontrado un gran sentido de comunidad y un amor continuo por su fe Católica en San Miguel. La familia Swain se convirtió en miembro hace aproximadamente dos años, después de mudarse al área desde Fayetteville.

“Hay una cercanía y una comunidad aquí que no he experimentado antes,” dice Jennifer. “La gente aquí es completamente buena.”

Las clases de PRE comienzan para los estudiantes de kindergarten y continúan hasta la confirmación. Las clases se llevan a cabo los Miércoles por la noche durante el año escolar de 6:30 a 8 p.m. Algunos padres se quedan para ayudar con la comida de la Misa Juvenil mensual o asistir a una reunión de padres. Los hijos de la pareja, Kenneth, de

Welcoming Others with the Love of Christ:

The Usher MinistryIn the words of Pope St. John Paul II, we are

called to “open wide the doors for Christ.” And while all of us can strive to welcome everyone to the Lord’s house, these words hold a special meaning for one ministry in our parish. As the first people to greet parishioners and visitors at the door with a smiling face and warm welcome, ushers provide our church with an invaluable service.

“The ushers are the first people that everyone sees as they come in the church,” says Jimmy Mack, coordinator of the Usher Ministry at St. Michael’s. “They’re shaking hands with people coming through, with big, happy smiles. It’s about creating that community aspect and making people feel at home.”

In addition to greeting parishioners and visitors at the door and helping them find a seat for Mass, ushers also pass the offertory basket and then bring the gifts up to the altar.

“Ushering is an organizational ministry that keeps things running,” Jimmy Mack says. “If it is done correctly, the Mass flows smoothly.”

Jimmy truly enjoys serving as an usher, ensuring that the sanctuary remains a sacred space, helping parishioners in any way he can, and opening doors — and hearts — to Christ. Even after more than 15 years in this ministry, he hopes to continue for many more.

“I really enjoy ushering,” Jimmy says. “It helps you get to know the other parishioners, to get to know your family in the faith community.”

Altar Societycontinued from front cover

The Altar Society raises the funds needed for their work by holding bake and crafts sales several times a year. They make quilts, and raffle a large quilt at Christmas to raise funds. The Altar Society has also helped with the dinners for the First Communion and Confirmation celebrations. They will be preparing lunches for the Philadelphia students who have been coming here to work on the Habitat for Humanity house in Fort Smith.

“It’s really rewarding to go and help them,” Rosemary says.

The Altar Society draws its members from the stewardship forms.

“We contact those who have signed on and let them know when we meet, and invite them,” Rosemary says. “Most already know us.”

Altar Society members find themselves living in stewardship as they help with church functions. They also find themselves growing closer to God as they deepen their fellowship with other members.
