IntroductionWHAT IS WIMAX?

on a tower or tall building to

broadcast the wireless signal

The subscriber receives the signals on a WiMAX enabled notebook, mobile Internetdevice (MID), or even a WiMAX modem.

Working

In practical terms, WIMAX would operate similar to WIFI but at higher speeds, over greater distances and for greater number of users.

When a user send data from a subscriber device to a base station then that base station broadcast the wireless signal into channel which is called uplink and base station transmit the same or another user is called downlink.

The Wimax network is just like a cell phone.

FIXED WIMAX:Fixed WIMAX deployments do not cater for hand off between base stations, therefore the service Provider cannot offer mobility.

MOBILE WIMAX:Mobile WIMAX implementations can be used to deliver both fixed & mobile services.

Types Of Wimax

Range - 30-mile (50-km) radius from base station

Speed - 70 megabits per second

Line-of-sight not needed between user and base station

Frequency bands - 2 to 11 GHz and 10 to 66 GHz

Comparison B/W Wimax & Wifi

WIMAXWIMAX is a long range system, covering many km’s that typically uses licensed spectrum to deliver a point-to-point connection to the internet from an ISP to an end user. •WIMAX provides services analogous to cell phone.

WiFiWiFi is shorter range

system, typically hundreds of meters, that uses unlicensed spectrum to provide access to a n/w.

WiFi is more analogous to a cordless phone.

Limitations So far one of the biggest restrictions to the widespread acceptance of WiMAX has been the cost of Wimax CPE (Wimax Receiver). This is not only the cost of Wimax CPE (Wimax Receiver) itself, but also that of installation.

WIMAX offers the kind of service where you can get a connection, wherever u may be.

When WIMAX is fully developed, u will no longer be limited to 300 feet within the WIFI hotspot, & u won’t have to drive around looking for a connection….
