TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME As we honor our fathers today we hear Jesus reassure his disciples by reminding them of the tender care of his heavenly Father. Our heavenly Father watches over us assiduously, faithfully, lovingly; every hair on our heads is accounted for. Let us recall all the times our own fathers, grandfathers, un-cles, and father figures — living and deceased — made us feel safe and secure with their vigilant care.

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heav-enly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

THIS SUMMER . . .

Let's put ourselves into the hands of the Lord, and pray that God will bless us and our families during the wonderful months of summer. May we all help make our home a place of relaxation, joy, love, peace and safety. May we be generous and considerate, not thinking only about ourselves, but helping others en-joy the blessings of summertime. Lord God, Creator of all things, guide our steps and strengthen our hearts, during these months of summer and vacation days. Grant us refreshment of mind and body. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Take time to claim your strengths; they are gifts of God. Take time to have fun; it's God's way of teaching you your strengths. Take time to grow yourself; only you can grow you. Take time to trust yourself; God trusts you. Take time to be self-reliant; it is better than being dependent. Take time to share with others; they will bless you, and you will bless them. Take time to have hope; you are a child of God.

WELCOME TO THE NEWLY BAPTIZED

Theodore Michael Caprio

SYMPATHIES AND PRAYERS We extend our sympathies and prayers to the family and friends of John Flynn who was recently buried from our church.

PLEASE — PLEASE — PLEASE Keep supporting your parish!

As followers of Christ Jesus, we are reminded that all things including life itself are a gift from God. What matters to God is not the gift, but the giver. Giving is God’s invitation to a way of life. It helps us to overcome our selfishness and love of things. What we do with what we have been given is a sign to God and to the world of the depth and meaning of our com-mitment. By recalling that all is gift, we therefore must strive to be generous with the financial gifts, both great and small, that God has bestowed upon us. Thank you for your support and your generosity to God and to St. Bernadette Parish. St. Bernadette Parish has enlisted Parish Giving to provide its parishioners and supporters with the opportunity to use Elec-tronic Funds Transfer as an alternative method for giving. The Program is free of charge for parishioners. More information about Parish Giving is available on our Par-ish web site: www.stbl.org on the “Parish Giving” page.

I ’ S !

WOW! It is finally here! What a long spring or whatever it was. We all can now go to many

places - see people - get sun. Life is better! Take advantage of these days. Do not delay. It will go so fast. Fourth of July is weeks away! Do not Dilly Dally! A big thanks to all the families who came out to beautify the parish property. It makes such a difference, and the compliments are ongoing! It was so neat to see everyone come together and just be together. I really do thank you! Your commitment to St. Bernadette’s is so beautiful. These days the last trash in different basements is being thrown out. I already did the attics and cupboards. Lots of things are getting fixed. The church tower is lit again. The church porch is lit again. The convent meeting rooms are all set up and will be used. The school is mostly cleaned. I think we are in a good place with that. One of the necessary fixtures that must take place this summer is the convent roof and chimney. Both are falling off. I hope to have that completed later this summer. I hope you all enjoy these summer days. Read! Relax! Renew! Refresh! I do not know what lies ahead so let’s all enjoy the good days while we can. God bless you all. “Yous” make me so happy! Faithfully, Fr. Michael Saban Administrator

H p Fa ’ D !

This day we send thanks and praise to all of our Dads — living and deceased. We thank them for their sacrifices, council, support, guidance and love. We recall their strength and firmness, their

compassion and generosity. Dads are such an essential part of the family! Boys will model their Fathers as they grow older. Girls will gravi-tate toward men that have similar behaviors or characteristics of their Fathers. That’s why it is so essential that Dads be ever mindful of what they exhibit and exemplify in the best of times and the worst of times. The role of Father is essential to the well balancing of the family. It is not an option nor can it be downplayed. Hence, tell your Dad “Thanks” for being a solid man, a good role model, a great example of manhood. It makes a difference to sons and daughters and grandchildren. Dads are essential to the good of any family!

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

It came to us as quietly as a cat’s paws on carpet, and minus any warning. They called it “Corona,” and later more technically as “Covid 19.” Either way, we just called it “the virus.” It truly is “an invisible enemy,” both to our bodies and minds. Chief among our latter reactions has been fear. Despite our so-called “victories” through mitigation and masks, that fear lingers in many minds this summer. That is because of what it could do to ourselves and those we love.

In that light, I ask you, could there be any more appropriate Gospel passage than the one we read and hear this weekend? True, there is a difference in time and meaning between the original setting and now. Our Lord wanted to take the fear out of the Apostles’ hearts as they faced their brand new task of preaching. That job would be very frightening for most people, but especially for uneducated fishermen who never had to do it. They knew that the very message Our Lord wanted them to convey might involve their own deaths if the listeners con-cluded it was blasphemous. They remembered that charge once being brought against their Master, who ex-celled at preaching.

Switch to the here and now, twenty plus centuries later, when Jesus addresses you and me as potential victims of this insidious virus. He tells us what to really fear: those who can kill the soul. We hear Him stress the point with a memorable figure: “So, with a Father who has the hairs of your head counted, do not be afraid!” (Emphasis added.)

Along with the comfort the Lord’s words bring comes a serious caution worth remembering. “Whoever denies Me before others, I will deny before My heavenly Father.” How would we ever deny Jesus in our ordinary lives? Consider the Catholic in a cocktail party conversation with a party goer who puts him/her on the spot with a question about abortion, and the weak Catholic answers, ”Well I’m personally against it, but I wouldn’t urge anyone to rethink their opinion.” In a very real way, that’s denying Christ. The same holds for the many other “hot button” issues where we know the Church takes an unpopular stance.

I take Our Lord’s words about denying someone “before My heavenly Father” as something that will happen on Judgment Day. That obviously outranks a virus on my fear index. Yes, covid has brought changes to our lives that we might not like. Testing can be trying. Masks may be maddening. But we have a powerful and loving God who is, in the confidence of Jeremiah whose words we hear today: “The Lord is with me like a mighty champion.” To that we can add a supportive quotation “There is no need to nervously pace the deck of the ship of life when the Great Pilot is at the wheel.” With such conviction our fear scurries away as quietly and quickly as the virus arrived. Good riddance to both.
