The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Reflections

Dear Friends, Again I would like to invite you to join us for this year’s Lenten Mission. We are pleased to welcome Fr. Britto Berchmans for this sacred time. Our mission will com-mence on Sunday, March 4th and will continue on Monday and Tuesday the 5th and 6th. Sunday Evening’s theme will be “Love Scripts: How to read God’s Handwriting” We begin our spiritual journey when we recognize that God not only loves us, but is in love with us. We need to develop the capacity to recognize God’s handwriting as He sends us His love-notes every day. Monday Evening’s theme will be “Prayer: Getting in touch with the God within” Heeding the command of the Lord to pray always, we seek to give expression to the groans and longings of our hearts. Prayer is basically our response to the God who has taken the initiative to love us unconditionally. Tuesday Evening’s theme will be “Rejoicing: Happiness and Fulfillment in life” No matter what we do, we are all seeking happiness. And yet, happiness seems to be so elusive. In this talk, Fr Britto outlines a simple approach to living our lives to the fullest. Drawing insights from positive psychology, spiritual life and common wisdom, he attempts to provide concrete steps to live more fully our everyday lives. This Sunday, and the two that follow, we celebrate the Scrutinies of the Elect. These very special rites are celebrated on the middle three Sundays of Lent, at liturgies in which the Elect are present. The Elect are those in our midst who are preparing for Baptism. Part of their journey to the font is that they have been received among us through the Rite of Acceptance, and they have been enrolled in the Book of the Elect in the Rite of Election. Even if these rites are not celebrated at the liturgy we attend, it can be wonderful to reflect upon the journey these Elect are making during Lent, as an inspiration and source of renewal for us in our journey. These are ancient rites and they may, at first, seem strange to us. But they are pro-foundly rooted in our human experience. We need to examine (scrutinize) how we are, the areas of our lives where we are tempted, or seriously sin - in what we do and what we fail to do. We really need healing and the strength that can come from the support of our sisters and brothers. In the early Church these rites were meant to investigate the faith of the chosen, to observe their faith, and to help what needed to strengthened, and to assist in areas that needed to be ceased or overcome. For me it seems that the scrutinies are about the elect scrutinizing the faith community, to call us to be fervent in the way we live out our faith. Let us continue to hold fast to our Lenten promises and Lenten disciplines. If we fall, we can get up again and begin, once more, that journey toward Easter. Let us also continue to pray for our Elect – those of our parish – and throughout the world. They bring new life to our Church, and fill us with hope.

“OPEN YOUR HEARTS TO THE LORD”

With Fr. Brito Berchmans

Born in India, Fr. Britto Berchmans has since served the Church in various capaci-ties in India, Italy, and the US, and is now a Chicago diocesan priest. He speaks extensively to groups on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth, and con-ducts parish missions. He holds multiple Master’s de-grees in physics, journalism, and theology, and a Doctor-ate in mass communications. He has produced a six-part set of CDs entitled, Enrich your Marriage. He is current-ly the pastor of St Paul of the Cross Parish in Park Ridge, a parish that ministers to over 4,800 registered fami-lies. Fr Britto laces humor into all his presentations, and recently he has been doing a comedy routine known as “Holy Smokes!” for audienc-es around Chicago. A year ago Fr Britto started to host on Catholic Radio a monthly talk show entitled “Built on the Rock” which focuses on Christ-centered marriages and relationships.

TRANSGENDERISM: A COMPASSIONATE APPROACH March 15th- By Fr. Thomas Loya at Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church The Knowledge and Prayer Series is sponsoring Fr. Thomas Loya, Pastor of Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church and world-wide ex-pert and speaker on the “Theology of the Body” to speak on the issue of Transgenderism. The presentation will be at 7:00 PM on March 15th at Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church, 14610 Will-Cook Rd in Homer Glen. Fr. Loya says: “My main point will be that on the Transgender issue, as in ALL issues of life, compassion is a function of truth. If we do not know and understand the truth, there can be no compassion. Compas-sionate truth must necessarily debunk certain fallacies, no matter how widely or deeply held they may be. “ “In the process of explaining the “compassionate truth” I also will offer some points for parents and families of how to react, what to say, not to say, what to do, what not to do when a family member suddenly claims to be “Transgender.” The Knowledge and Prayer series is sponsored by the Multi Parish Respect Life Ministries from and Our Lady of the Woods, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Michael in Orland Park and St. Bernard’s, Our Mother of Good Counsel, and Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church in Homer Glen

D uring Lent, there are many opportuni-ties to aid the less fortunate. One way to make a contribution as a family is to

participate in assembling Easter Baskets for the many children in need who live near our own community. On Wednesday, March 14th, the Catholic Charities @ St. Francis committee will meet to fill baskets that will be given to the children whose families visit the supple-mental supper programs at St. Anne, St. Blase and St. Christo-pher. We will also assemble gift bags containing hygiene kits, socks and t-shirts to be given to the homeless.

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

I write this February 20th for the March 4th bulletin. I interrupt my CJB school reflec-tion. Yesterday, I re-ceived a call informing me that one of my clos-est friends, Fr. Larry Duris, died sudden-ly. He did not show up for morning Mass and when his associate went to check his room he found him dead. There was disbelief when I heard this news. We had spoken on the phone just a week before and he was in good spirits. Lar-ry was pastor of St.Ailbe in Chica-go. They were in the final planning steps in the Archdioce-san process "Renew My Church". While this required much work and will have significant im-pact, he seemed excit-ed about the process. Larry and I were or-dained in 1969. Like all in the class of ‘69, he had the option to retire in 2013. He asked the Cardinal for an exten-sion to pastor beyond 70, and it was grant-ed. He was devoted to

ministry. I regret he never had the oppor-tunity to en-joy retirement. But, he never wanted to consid-er retirement. For 47 years, Larry ministered in the Afri-can-American commu-nity. First as an associ-ate, then pastor of 3 parishes in those com-munities. His interest in this min-istry began when we worked as seminarians at Precious Blood par-ish. He served that community with unfail-ing dedication and faith. The years were not without challenge. He was a strong advocate of Catholic Schools, aware of what they of-fer to the community. His parishes were not all the same. In visiting him I learned the diver-sity in the African-American communi-ty. Some were poor and suffered the chal-lenges of poverty. Oth-ers were middle-class and provided a different ministerial focus. In all those Larry was open and generous and with flexibility to minister to

people in differing ways. At times he experienced the impact of racial prej-udice. People asking why he never pastored a “better par-ish"? Meaning white of course. He simply shared the experiences of his parishes and nev-er let the bias he at times experienced hard-en his heart. He worked long hours and at times with limited resources. He had many talents that he shared with his parishes as well as with the Archdiocese. We would often meet for dinner; shared time away. We enjoyed each other's compa-ny. St. Ailbe has lost a great pastor. I have lost a dear friend. May he rest in peace!

MINISTRY MOMENTS THIS WEEK: Deacon Mike Kiley

Throughout 2018, this page will include reflections from staff and parishioners high-lighting their ministry involve-ment. I am Deacon Michael Kiley. I was born in Louisville, Kentucky. I lived there for some years and then onto New Orleans and final-ly to Chicago; my fa-ther was with the air-lines. I always had a desire to be a priest but after spending time in the seminary and later living in an Au-gustinian monastery, I came to the conclusion the ordained life was not for me but God had other ideas. In 1993 I was asked by the pas-tor of my home parish would I consider the diaconate and on April 19, 1997, I was or-dained as a perma-nent/single deacon to the Archdiocese of Chicago. My calling is that of ministering to the sick and the dying. This ministry has been one of incredible dimen-sions. Meeting people

at their most challeng-ing times. After fifteen years as staff at the parish, another change was on the horizon. I was asked by the di-rector of the Pastoral Care Office of Palos Hospital to be a full-time chaplain. Seeing this as a way to devote all my time to minister-ing to the sick and dy-ing, I joined Palos. Within four months I became the director of the department. During this time, I had very little opportunity to en-gage in other diaco-nate ministries. Fr. Artur was kind enough to offer me a space at

St. Francis where I could address this is-sue. On September 30, 2016 I retired. I am still on call at Palos when needed for emergen-cies. I continue in the ministry of reaching out to the sick and the dy-ing. People will ask isn’t this a difficult min-istry? Actually, in jour-neying with another at such a time, I receive more than I give. It is with great joy and thanksgiving to be a part the St. Francis of Assisi family.

KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH Copyright (c) J.S. Paluch Co., Inc.

There's no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Command-ments. The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy peo-ple probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sab-bath. If we take this com-mandment literally, ba-bies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor

really work? How about changing that dirty dia-per (poor baby!)? We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this command-ment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: "The law of the LORD is perfect, / refreshing the soul" (19:8). Our Sab-bath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpick-ing.

FOUR CHARACTERISTICS OF A VIBRANT CHURCH

HOPE, GIFTEDNESS, AWARENESS, AND

RELATIONSHIP

As the world becomes more “spiritual but NOT religious” what does the Catholic Church have to offer?

What can RELIGION provide, that the culture cannot?

What does our faith in Jesus bring to the world?

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Great Room - Use Church Entrance

708-460-0042 Thursday, March 8, 2018

This workshop will be facilitated by

Sr. Gael Gensler and Kathy McNicholas What factors mark a “vibrant parish”? There are about as many answers to that question as there are Catholic parishes! And most of the answers view the parish through a unique lens – Finances in the black? October count? Number of Baptisms and Weddings? Is that true vibrancy? Sr. Gael and Kathy will spend an evening viewing “parish vibrancy” through the lens of what our Catholic faith has to offer the modern world – Hope, Giftedness, Awareness, and Relationship. Come and be inspired to discuss ways your parish can be more alive and vibrant in Christ.

All are invited to attend a meeting on Mon-day, March 12, at either 1:00 pm or 7:00 pm, in the Great Room, to review the parish process for requesting event dates, meeting space and ticket sales for 2018/2019 parish events. We will share the meeting/event date request forms and share information regarding promotion logistics. Since our parish calendar cycles July 1 through June 30, requests for meeting rooms, even regularly scheduled meetings, must be submitted new each year. A review of established procedures will be dis-cussed, as well as updates on how to make bulletin submissions and additional promotion opportunities.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If your parish is reading from Year B of the Lectionary today, and not Year A, as is normally done when there are elect present for the scrutinies and preparing for Easter baptism, you hear about Jesus driving the money-changers from the temple. If you wished to get as close as possible to this site today, you would in fact be at a Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, built on the ruins of Herod's temple. Archeologists believe that this striking, gold-domed crown of a shrine is set precisely where the Holy of Holies once was. Jews believe that the rock is the exact spot where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. It is not a mosque, as some think, but a shrine, the oldest one in the Muslim world. For them, the rock is the place from which the Prophet Mohammed ascended on a visit to heaven. The Crusaders mistook the shrine for the actual Temple of Solomon, and the infamous Knights Templar used it as their headquarters and model for their churches elsewhere. The geometric perfection of the shrine is a mathematician's dream. The inscriptions are not exactly hospitable though, since they encour-age Christians to "depart from error" and declare that "Jesus son of Mary was only a messenger of God." In ancient times, those who prayed here after walking around the rock were given a certificate entitling the bearer to admission to paradise. The ticket had to be buried with them.
