READ 1 John 4:7-21

1. Many people look at their outward circumstances to determine if God loves them. What is the problem with doing that? According to John, how do we really know God loves us?

2. In verse 16, John concludes, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.” What do you understand that to mean? What does it mean to rely on something? How is knowing and relying on God’s love evidenced in daily living?

READ Genesis 45:1-15 & Genesis 50:15-21

1. Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers. After he rose to a position ofstature, he was thrown into jail for years after being unjustly accused ofassaulting Potiphar’s wife. Eventually he became prime minister of Egypt. If hehad based his evaluation on his circumstances, Joseph easily could haveconcluded that God did not care about him. Look at both passages to see whathis conclusions actually were. How can Joseph’s life help you respond to adversecircumstances in your life?

Page 26: 1 John - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/.../Crossway_Mens_Fall_1John_Study.pdf · guide”? How does Paul’s view of his conscience affect the way he lives before God? 2. ...

2. One writer has said, “‘God is love’ is the complete truth about God so far asthe Christian is concerned… Every single thing that happens to him expressesGod's love to him… God is love to him — holy, omnipotent love — at everymoment and in every event of every day’s life. Even when he cannot see thewhy and the wherefore of God’s dealings, he knows that there is love in andbehind them, and so he can rejoice always, even when, humanly speaking, things are going wrong. He knows that the true story of his life, when known, will prove to be, as the hymn says, ‘mercy from first to last’ — and he iscontent.” What is your reaction to this? Ask God to give you the faith to hold thistruth deep in your heart so that contentment might characterize your life.

READ 1 John 4:7-21

1. When John says there is no fear in love, what kind of fear is he talking about? Fear of what? Why is it impossible to fear and to rely on God’s love at the same time?

2. If perfect love drives out fear, why do we so often walk around in guilt and fear? What is the solution?

READ Psalm 33

1. Twice in this psalm a positive reference is made to fearing God (vv. 8 and 18). How do you reconcile these references with John’s statement that perfect lovedrives out fear? What kind of fear is the psalmist addressing? Why is it important to hold onto this reverence, awe, and respect while driving out the fear of rejection and condemning judgment?

2. What difference would it make in your life to have this kind of positive fear? What are the consequences if you do not? How can you cultivate this positive fear?
