A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World

Letter from the Pastor

200 years. It seems like quite a journey. 200 years is quite an accomplishment. For an organization

it's great; for a town, it's even more of an accomplishment. There's a lot of history that happens in 200 years.

A lot of things occur in 200 years—a lot of strife, a lot of heartache, a lot of love, and a lot of unity.

Being at the church, I know how deep the ties here run. In talking to everyone here, it's not at all hard

to see how much this history means to everyone. I know how much the church has meant here in the

community, and I know how the familial connections are in this church. It's a great thing that so many

families run so deep in this community and how vital most of these families were in the town evolving and

growing to where it is now.

And while most of my messages are about looking to the future, and seeing what we can do to work

towards new things, I do believe there is value in looking at the past and learning from the circumstances that

have brought us to where we are. There have been a lot of ups and down in the life of this church as well as

the life of the community. There's a lot of things that have taken place in the 200 years that Marthasville has

been around, and those things all come to inform us of who we are, as well as who we can be.

The church, as we know, doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's part of the community that surrounds it, and it

is intertwined with said community if it wants to survive. That being said, 200 years is really an

accomplishment. Not only for the church to remain here in the community, but to be so vital a part of it. It's

amazing to see and hear the stories and lessons from the past and present that everyone has shared with me,

and I can't wait to see what we can add to those stories as we continue this journey together.

See you in the Pews,

Pastor Jeff

• Silent Auction

• Lots of Laughs—Fun for All!

Theme—Murder Mystery

“CSI Marthasville”

Prepare to be Fingerprinted! Billionaire Seymour Butz is the victim of a homicide. Minnie Butz, the widow, has

followed his last request to have an “After Party” with family and friends. Some

of the Forensic Evidence was compromised at the lab, so CSI Gil Gristle arrives

to recreate the crime scene. Will the evidence show the killer to be Jim Shorts,

the Health Club employee, Eggfoo Young, the cook at his favorite restaurant, or

his lawyer Sue MeDry? Maybe the Butz Family wanted him dead so they could

inherit all his billions: Both Grandson Payne “Indie” Butz and Granny Fanny Butz

had their reasons to “twerk” Seymour into an early grave. Perhaps Minnie Butz

will get pinched for the murder? Follow CSI Gristle as he questions the guests,

gathers DNA samples and swabs for laughs to find the killer.

• Set-up workday will be Friday, June 2nd—12:30pm. Help is needed.

• Doors open at 5pm on June 3rd. Meal begins at 5:30pm.

• Contact Diane Freese, Marigene Kersten, or Cindy Buescher with questions.

The steak dinner committee wishes to thank you in advance for your support. Proceeds will benefit the Parsonage Renovation/Building Fund,

pending on Congregational Vote.

HELP WITH BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION NEEDED

Cathie Schoppenhorst and I are co-chairs of the Marthasville Bicentennial

Committee. There are some big events coming up in which help is needed. The first is

the Marthasville to Peers on the Katy Trail event on May 21, 2017. The second

is a historical walk through St. Paul’s Cemetery on May 28, 2017.

The biggest event, for which the most help is needed, is the Heritage Festival Bicentennial Celebration on June 17-18, 2017. Here are just a few areas in which

help is needed for this event: help setting up and putting away; moving tables and chairs;

guiding vendors to their assigned work areas; parking; working in the soda trailer;

hosting visitors to the Grabs house; supervising a pedal tractor pull; furnishing and

driving a golf cart; and many other jobs to be done.

If you would be willing to help make the bicentennial celebration a huge success by

volunteering to work in one of the areas, please call me at 433-5474. Thank you.

Watermelon, a popular summer snack, not only quenches your thirst, it can also quench inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis.

In the summer heat, the iron in France’s Eiffel Tower expands, making the tower grow more than six inches.

The top three grilled foods of summer are: 1. Hamburger 2. Steaks 3. Hot Dogs

SUMMER FUN FACTS:

Watermelon, is part of the cucumber, pumpkin, and squash family and consists of 92% water. Americans, on average, consume 15 lbs. of watermelon annually.

Popsicles, another summer treat, was accidentally invented by an 11-year-old boy in San Francisco in 1905. He left a glass of soda sitting outside, and by the next morning, the soda had frozen. He began selling them at an amusement park in New Jersey. In the United States, cherry is the number 1 flavor.

Many Native Americans held ritual dances to honor the sun during the summer solstice. For example, the Sioux would set up teepees in a circle to represent the cosmos,

and participants would decorate their bodies in the symbolic colors of the sun: red (sunset), blue (sky), yellow (lightning), and black (night).

Before the Civil War, schools did not have summer vacation. In rural communities, kids had school off during the spring planting and fall harvest while urban schools were essentially year-round. The long summer holiday didn’t come about until the early 20th century.

• Halsey Taylor invented the drinking fountain as a tribute to his father, who succumbed to typhoid

fever after drinking from a contaminated public water supply in 1896.

• George Washington, the celebrated Father of Our Country, had no children

of his own. Researchers believe that childhood illnesses may have rendered

him sterile. He did adopt the two children from Martha Custis’ first marriage.

• A.A. Milne created Winnie the Pooh for his son, Christopher Robin. Pooh was based on

Robin’s teddy bear, Edward, a gift Christopher had received for his first birthday, and on

their father/son visits to the London Zoo, where the bear named Winnie was

Christopher’s favorite. Pooh comes from the name of Christopher’s pet swan (of course).

• According to a 2005 survey commissioned by TiVo,

the top ten TV dads of all time are as follows:

1. Cliff Huxtable (The Cosby Show)

2. Sheriff Andy Taylor (The Andy Griffith Show)

3. Pa Ingalls (Little House on the Prairie)

4. Howard Cunningham (Happy Days)

5. Ward Cleaver (Leave it to Beaver)

6. Jim Anderson (Father Knows Best)

7. Mike Brady (The Brady Bunch)

8. Tim Taylor (Home Improvement)

9. Reverend Eric Camden (7th Heaven)

10. Danny Tanner (Full House)

• The only father-daughter collaboration to hit the top spot on the Billboard pop

music chart was the 1967 hit single "Something Stupid" by Frank & Nancy Sinatra.

• In the underwater world of the seahorse, it's the male that gets to carry the eggs

and birth the babies.

• If show creator/producer Sherwood Schwartz had gotten his way, Gene Hackman

would have portrayed the role of father Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch.

• The Stevie Wonder song "Isn't She Lovely" is about his newborn daughter,

Aisha. If you listen closely, you can hear Aisha crying during the song.

• Dick Hoyt has pushed and pulled his son Rick, who has cerebral palsy, through hundreds of

marathons and triathlons. Rick cannot speak, but using a custom-designed computer he has

been able to communicate. They ran their first five-mile race together when Rick was in high

school. When they were done, Rick sent his father this message: "Dad, when we were

running, it felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!"

• Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, of Spokane, Washington, started the tradition of Father's Day in

the honor of her dad, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran. As the idea of Father’s

Day was conceived, she chose his birthday which was proclaimed on June 19, 1910, by

Spokane’s mayor as the first Father’s Day.
