Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus
Letter from the Pastor
Summer is here and it's--HOT! Thank goodness I don't have an outside job, although some outside activity would
certainly be good for me. So, I am trying to keep up with my gardening, walk in the evenings, and otherwise do
small chores and activities. I certainly hope you are finding ways to keep cool and at the same time keep fit. My
concern during these hot days is that people don't overdo or exhaust themselves in the heat. Please keep an eye out
on your neighbors and friends, little children and pets. It's better to be safe than sorry.
I want to update you on some exciting projects that are scheduled for Church. 1. On Sunday, July 31st, the
Heritage Cluster is sponsoring a pulpit exchange. The Heritage Cluster is comprised of seven nearby UCC
churches. Representatives from these churches meet occasionally to plan projects, events, and fellowship
opportunities. The churches are: Femme Osage, St. John's Cappeln, Faith Wentzville, Friedens-Peace New Melle,
St. Paul's Marthasville, St. Paul's Defiance, and Immanuels Holstein.
Rev. Jeanne Lischer, pastor at Holstein, worked hard putting together church and minister for the pulpit
exchange. Here is the result of her work: On the 31st of July, Rev. Don Bizer from Femme Osage will preach at
Immanuels Holstein; Rev. Kevin Weaver from St. John's Cappeln will preach at Faith Wentzville; Pastor Austin
McCandless from Faith Wentzville will preach at St. Paul's Defiance; Rev. Karen Eck from Friedens-Peace New
Melle will preach at Emmaus Marthasville; Rev. Donna Kendrick-Philips from St. Paul's Marthasville will
preach at Friedens-Peace New Melle; Pastor Don Frandsen from St. Paul's Defiance will preach at St. Paul's
Marthasville; Rev. Jeanne Lischer from Immanuels Holstein will preach at St. John's Cappeln; and Rev. Shari
Maddox from Emmaus Marthasville will preach at Femme Osage.
Did you notice who will be preaching on that Sunday at our church? It is Don Frandsen. I think you will
love him. He is a very good speaker, very charming, and quite interesting. Be sure to give him a great St. Paul's
welcome.
2. Another project that is being planned is for Sunday, August 21st. On that Sunday we will host a
UCC missionary. I don't have all the details about the missionary yet, but I do know that Holstein and possibly St.
John's, High Hill, plan to join us for the morning worship. In order to accommodate everyone, the worship time for
that Sunday, and that Sunday only will be changed from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. So, for that one Sunday you get a
little extra morning time. After church I am thinking we will have a potluck dinner. That way people will have an
opportunity to talk more informally and more in depth with one another and the missionary.
3. The last thing that's new for the summer is that the Emmaus Choirs--both vocal and bell--have begun
practicing at church on Tuesday afternoons from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. If you want to see the choirs in action and be
serenaded by some lovely music performed by some wonderfully sweet people, please stop by church. Watching
and listening to the choirs practice makes me so proud of St. Paul's. It feels like we are using our building in the way
God intends it to be used, and in the way it has been designed--as space with grace. So, as I like to say, "It may be
hot outside, but the climate is perfect and blessed inside.
Have a wonderful summer.
Many Blessings, Pastor Donna

OBITUARY ~ Death of Common Sense
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common
Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for
sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in
bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated
such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn’t always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t
spend more than you earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not
children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old
boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens
suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a
teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his
condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for
doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining
their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could
not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to
have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became
businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their
victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself
from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for
assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman
failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a
little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and
Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and
by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:

Someone Else Is To Blame
I’m A Victim
