Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I know many of us start to think about what we can do to show how much we care. There’s a sense of affection in the air. While this is good, it seems that love is something that is lacking in the world. The irony in this is that the past few weeks of January, we’ve had a call to unity throughout our scripture readings. Jesus, Paul, Isaiah, all beseech us to unify and live with one another in loveto unify and realize that even different opinions aren’t enough to stop us from caring for one another. It seems that as we look around the opposite is being told to usthat we must stand our ground firmly, and only accept people if they come to our opinions—compromise shouldn’t happen, but rather we should try to force our ideas onto those that disagree. I’m not sure why, but it seems like the predominant mindset is that only one side is right, and it’s completely right, and the other side is wrong, and it must be unequivocally wrong. Which, if we really sit down and think this through, does us a disservice. It’s through our differences that the church is able to accomplish much. If we were all the same, then we’d never be able to get things done. Through diversity we see different gifts (which is good because Heaven help us if I was the church treasurer!). There is a lot that the world and God have to offer us, but it’s only if we can go into it with an open mind. Rather than trying to figure out how to maintain divisions among ourselves, we should be trying to figure out how to break walls down. I’ve seen in multiple churches the thought of “We want the church to grow” butting right up against “There are only certain types of people we want to let in”. It simply doesn’t work with that mindset. So, let’s try and change our focus. Rather than strive for division, let’s see what happens when we work towards unity. Let’s see what love can do in place of hate. Let’s follow the will of God rather than the will of society. In a time when it seems like the world is more divided than ever, how awesome is it that we are called to be the ones to end those divisionsthat God trusts us enough to welcome everyone into the Christian family. A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World

Letter from the Pastor

As we approach February, love starts to be in the air. Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I

know many of us start to think about what we can do to show how much we care. There’s a sense of

affection in the air. While this is good, it seems that love is something that is lacking in the world.

We’ve just come through one of the most divisive elections in our country, and it seems that those in

power want to divide us more than unite us. (I’m talking on both sides of the aisle).

The irony in this is that the past few weeks of January, we’ve had a call to unity throughout

our scripture readings. Jesus, Paul, Isaiah, all beseech us to unify and live with one another in love—

to unify and realize that even different opinions aren’t enough to stop us from caring for one another.

It seems that as we look around the opposite is being told to us—that we must stand our ground

firmly, and only accept people if they come to our opinions—compromise shouldn’t happen, but

rather we should try to force our ideas onto those that disagree. I’m not sure why, but it seems like

the predominant mindset is that only one side is right, and it’s completely right, and the other side is

wrong, and it must be unequivocally wrong. Which, if we really sit down and think this through,

does us a disservice.

It’s through our differences that the church is able to accomplish much. If we were all the

same, then we’d never be able to get things done. Through diversity we see different gifts (which is

good because Heaven help us if I was the church treasurer!). There is a lot that the world and God

have to offer us, but it’s only if we can go into it with an open mind. Rather than trying to figure out

how to maintain divisions among ourselves, we should be trying to figure out how to break walls

down. I’ve seen in multiple churches the thought of “We want the church to grow” butting right up

against “There are only certain types of people we want to let in”. It simply doesn’t work with that

mindset.

So, let’s try and change our focus. Rather than strive for division, let’s see what happens

when we work towards unity. Let’s see what love can do in place of hate. Let’s follow the will of

God rather than the will of society. In a time when it seems like the world is more divided than ever,

how awesome is it that we are called to be the ones to end those divisions—that God trusts us

enough to welcome everyone into the Christian family.

See you in the pews,

Pastor Jeff
