Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus
Letter from the Pastor
We have been very blessed this year with a wonderful Confirmation Class: Adrianna Engelage,
Brayden Mayer, Bryce Mayer, Kayla Niemeyer, Elise Thierbach, and Tristan Zeh. I can’t forget to
mention Isaiah DeVore. Isaiah was confirmed in 2014 but has continued to meet with us and has
participated in class activities.
Each of these young people have brought something unique and wonderful to the Confirmation
Class. Adrianna has brought a very good and pure spirit. Brayden has brought a quickness of mind and a
clever humor that lifts us and makes us smile. Bryce has brought a positive attitude and outlook and a
willingness to do whatever is asked of him. Kayla has brought a gentleness and an inner glow that is ready
to shine. Elise has brought grace and thoughtfulness and the willingness to explore any subject deeply.
Tristan has brought wisdom and a deep personal faith. Isaiah has brought leadership. He has been more
than helpful, filling in whenever needed.
I can truly say working with this class, and with my partner in teaching, Susie Thierbach, has been a
great experience. I am very proud of the things we accomplished this year. The class worked through the
Evangelical Catechism and their class book, Affirming Faith. They had an overnight retreat at Epiphany
UCC in St. Louis. They completed a ropes course at MoVal. They attended the MLK, Jr. worship service at
Zion UCC in Union. They worshiped at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown St. Louis. They put together
a pancake breakfast—raising money for Juggling Jeff. They read, performed during Advent, lit candles and
faithfully worshiped at St. Paul’s UCC on Sunday mornings.
All of this is a credit to the class themselves, to the Sunday School teachers they have had through
the years, to their parents and grandparents who brought and bring them to church, and to a very loving
congregation who has supported, encouraged, and helped them along in every step of their faith journey.
With the continued support of family and church, I am confident this class will bring and be a blessing to
the church for many years to come. I am very proud of them. —Pastor Donna
Confirmation is the renewal of promises made at the time of our baptism.
It is daring to live life based on God’s Word.
It is being instructed in the basics of the Christian faith.
It is publicly confessing faith in Jesus Christ.
It is risking to live by that faith.

Memorial Day has its customs— General Orders No. 11 stated that "in this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed," but over time several
customs and symbols became associated with the holiday. It is customary on Memorial Day to fly the flag at half-staff until noon, and then raise it to the top of the staff until
sunset. Taps, the 24-note bugle call, is played at all military funerals and memorial services. It originated in 1862.
The World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," by John McCrea, inspired the Memorial Day custom of wearing red artificial poppies. In 1915, a Georgia teacher and volunteer war worker named Moina Michael began a campaign to make the poppy a symbol of tribute to veterans and for "keeping the faith with all who died." The sale of poppies
has supported the work of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
