I’ve met so many wonderful people at St. Paul’s, all of whom I am going to miss. A part of my heart is breaking. Of course the other part of my heart is happy for you, and for Pastor Jeff. Thankfully, I have that happiness to fall back on in those moments when I find myself drifting into sadness. I remind myself of the bright future ahead for you, and with that thought, I can’t help but smile. I am happy for you and proud of you. I am proud of the way you conducted the search. I am proud of the way you came together for the good of the church, I am proud of what a loving congregation you are. I know Pastor Jeff is going to be pleasantly surprised when he discovers what a great congregation he has been called to serve. I’ve been thinking of a few tips that might help facilitate Jeff’s ministry among you: One thing that was particularly helpful to me when I began at St. Paul’s was the way people told me in advance about an important Sunday or upcoming event in the church. I always knew what you expected for Totenfest, Memorial Sunday, Veteran’s Day, Rally Day, etc. That advance knowing really helped me be prepared. I think it will help Pastor Jeff too, so keep him informed and updated. Along those lines, I also appreciated being informed when someone was ill or in the hospital, or when a new baby was born, or whenever some other life-changing event occurred. Being present at those times is exactly where he will want to be. So please turn to Pastor Jeff when something important happens in your life or in the life of your family. I thought it might be nice if, on occasion, you invited Pastor Jeff to your home for a visit, or out to lunch some afternoon, or over for Sunday dinner. These informal visits will help him to get to know you as friends and family. It would be especially helpful if our young adults could arrange a gathering where Pastor Jeff could meet them all, spend some time getting to know them, and maybe even plan an outing or two with them. The same could be said for our youth. It would be great if our teens and their parents could arrange an evening when everyone could meet Pastor Jeff and talk about their vision and hope for a youth group. There is a lot you can do to make Pastor Jeff feel welcomed. Whatever you do, however, I know he will feel grateful for your effort and for your thoughtfulness. Finally, be sure to keep him in your prayers. Nothing inspires a pastor more than the thought that the congregation is praying for him just as he will be praying for you. Ultimately, it is that mutual encouragement in faith that binds the church together and makes the church a place where anyone and everyone will be pleased to come. I am excited for you. I look forward to hearing (through the grapevine) about all the great things happening at St. Paul’s. I am sure the good news about you will keep me smiling for a long time. A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World

Letter from the Pastor

It’s tough saying goodbye. I’ve met so many wonderful people at St. Paul’s, all of whom I am going to miss.

A part of my heart is breaking. Of course the other part of my heart is happy for you, and for Pastor Jeff. Thankfully,

I have that happiness to fall back on in those moments when I find myself drifting into sadness. I remind myself of

the bright future ahead for you, and with that thought, I can’t help but smile. I am happy for you and proud of you. I

am proud of the way you conducted the search. I am proud of the way you came together for the good of the church,

I am proud of what a loving congregation you are. I know Pastor Jeff is going to be pleasantly surprised when he

discovers what a great congregation he has been called to serve.

I’ve been thinking of a few tips that might help facilitate Jeff’s ministry among you:

One thing that was particularly helpful to me when I began at St. Paul’s was the way people told me in

advance about an important Sunday or upcoming event in the church. I always knew what you expected

for Totenfest, Memorial Sunday, Veteran’s Day, Rally Day, etc. That advance knowing really helped

me be prepared. I think it will help Pastor Jeff too, so keep him informed and updated.

Along those lines, I also appreciated being informed when someone was ill or in the hospital, or when a

new baby was born, or whenever some other life-changing event occurred. Being present at those times

is exactly where he will want to be. So please turn to Pastor Jeff when something important happens in

your life or in the life of your family.

I thought it might be nice if, on occasion, you invited Pastor Jeff to your home for a visit, or out to lunch

some afternoon, or over for Sunday dinner. These informal visits will help him to get to know you as

friends and family.

It would be especially helpful if our young adults could arrange a gathering where Pastor Jeff could

meet them all, spend some time getting to know them, and maybe even plan an outing or two with them.

The same could be said for our youth. It would be great if our teens and their parents could arrange an

evening when everyone could meet Pastor Jeff and talk about their vision and hope for a youth group.

There is a lot you can do to make Pastor Jeff feel welcomed. Whatever you do, however, I know he will feel

grateful for your effort and for your thoughtfulness.

Finally, be sure to keep him in your prayers. Nothing inspires a pastor more than the thought that the

congregation is praying for him just as he will be praying for you. Ultimately, it is that mutual

encouragement in faith that binds the church together and makes the church a place where anyone and

everyone will be pleased to come.

I am excited for you. I look forward to hearing (through the grapevine) about all the great things

happening at St. Paul’s. I am sure the good news about you will keep me smiling for a long time.

Many Blessings—Pastor Donna

With Deepest Gratitude We would like to take this opportunity to thank Pastor Donna

for her service to St. Paul’s UCC over the past 26 months. The

congregation is eternally grateful for her dedication and remarkable

guidance in helping us heal. Her presence has been comforting, and

her wisdom essential during this transition. The friendships made will

never be forgotten. We wish Pastor Donna the very best as she

embarks on new endeavors. It is with greatest appreciation that we thank

her for her time spent with us, her healing touch, and impeccable

guidance. May God richly bless Pastor Donna and her family; may His

greatest blessings be hers, as we have been truly blessed to have had her

to lead us these past 2+ years.

Sincerely,

St. Paul’s UCC Church Council and Congregation

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day–a common misunderstanding, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans–living or dead–but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. There are approximately 21 million military veterans in the United States.

16.1 million living veterans served during at least one war. 2 million veterans are women. 7 million veterans served during the Vietnam War era (1964-1975). 5.5 million veterans served during the Gulf War (representing service from Aug. 2, 1990, to present). Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II (1941-1945), about 620,000 are still alive. 2 million veterans served during the Korean War (1950-1953). 6 million veterans served in peacetime. As of 2014, 2.9 million veterans received compensation for service-connected disabilities. As of 2014, 3 states have more than 1 million veterans in among their population: California (1.8

million), Florida (1.6 million), Texas (1.7 million). The VA health care system had 54 hospitals in 1930. Since then it has expanded to include 171 medical

centers; more than 350 outpatient, community, and outreach clinics; 126 nursing home care units; and 35 live-in care facilities for injured or disabled vets.

Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States. In Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday in October.

The first pilgrims arrived in North America in December of 1620. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in Plymouth in the fall of 1621. The Native American tribe invited to the first Thanksgiving dinner were the Wampanoag Indians. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted for three full days. Thanksgiving was not recognized as an official holiday until 1941, when Congress decided that the

holiday should be observed officially on the fourth Thursday in November every single year. The date was chosen by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in order to make the Christmas shopping season longer to aid in the country's financial recovery from the Great Depression. Prior to the date being set in 1941, it was up to the president to set the date for Thanksgiving each year.

Thank you to all our military personnel

for the sacrifices you have made

for our freedom. We solute you.

May God bless you and keep you

in his tender loving care.
