PAUL’S UCC NEWSLETTER MAY 2015 103 South Second Street Marthasville, MO 63357 (636) 433-2482 [email protected]www.stpaulsuccmo.org Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus Letter from the Pastor I’ve been thinking about transitions—those times when for one reason or another a significant change occurs that impacts some part of our life, which up until the moment of the transition, we had considered stable, reliable, and fairly secure. This is not the dictionary definition of transition, but it is mine, and it’s based on personal experience. In my case it’s the experience of moving. For those who don’t know, Carl and I are in the process of moving from the house we own and have lived in for 35 years to one about a half mile away, that the bank now owns, but which we felt better accommodates our growing family—particularly grandchildren. The transition, which seemed at first like it should be easy, has proved to be more stressful than I anticipated. There is so much “baggage” associated with the move—emotional and actual—that I’ve noticed lately that I’ve become a bit more curt, cross, and downright crabby. Poor Carl, he has had to deal with my mood swings, insecurities, and fragile temperament. The man is a saint. As for me, I am learning, or trying to learn, how to be better at handling life’s transitions. What I’ve learned so far is that there is no going back to the way something once was. That door has been closed. The only option left, then, is to move forward into the transition. That means I can move forward kicking and screaming (which is what I’ve been doing), or I can try to move forward with a touch of dignity, grace, and humor. I think for the sake of good relationships and future happiness, I need to choose the latter. Did I actually say Carl was a saint? Well he is, but he also has had his moments of upset, worry, and shortness. Thankfully, blessedly, we seem to have our breakdowns and panic attacks at different times—which is how we survive, but also how I learned that when the other person is not at their best, it helps to pray for them. It helps to turn our nervousness, frustrations, and resentments over to God. I think it gives God a chance to work on our issues and it invites God into the process of making a change. So, I’ve also learned that it is much better to go through a transition feeling God’s presence and trusting in God’s guidance, than it is to feel as if we have to go it alone, or handle everything on our own. Finally, I’ve realized that though life’s transitions are hard, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. community where child abuse and neglect does not exist and families have the resources they need to
navigate a crisis, feel supported and keep their children safe.

DEFINITIONS OF CARE:
CRISIS CARE - Crisis Care provides support to families that are encountering a situation that could
lead to loss of employment, loss of shelter or a child's basic needs going unmet - in addition to any
situation that could potentially lead to a child being abused and/or neglected.
Crisis circumstances could include:
Parental/Sibling Illness or Death
Disruption in shelter due to utilities or rent being unpaid
Current domestic violence in the home
Imminent undue abuse and/or neglect
RESPITE CARE - Respite Care provides short-term support to families who are encountering high levels
of parental stress. Respite circumstances could include:
Stress from caring for own children or children which you have guardianship over
High level of stress due to caring for a child suffering from developmental delays, mood
disorders, and/or physical disability
Financial stress due to starting a new job without immediate funds for child care
Familial stress due to a single parent home
CASE MANAGEMENT - Grace's Place offers personalized case management services for families. We
offer applicable resources for their current situation and future referrals that will strengthen their
safety net as they transition out of operating in a crisis state.
ESSENTIAL NEEDS - We offer the families we serve many essential need items which may include
clothes, bedding, shoes, toiletries, diapers, cleaning products, etc.

Council Highlights
Congregational Meeting—A congregational meeting will be held immediately following church on Sun, May 3, 2015 to vote on accepting a bid to install lightning rods on the church and fellowship hall. See pg. 11 of this newsletter for further information.
Confirmation Announcement—Confirmation classes will begin this fall for those who are entering 7th or 8th grade in the fall of 2015. Please see Pastor Donna if your child will be enrolling. A parent meeting will be held on Sunday, June 28th immediately following worship.
October 2014 Lightning Strike—More updates have been made. Still waiting on final adjustments.
Bldgs. & Grounds—Will be addressing the water leak in the side room near the vestibule.
Copier—A color copier has been ordered.

A Mother’s Heartfelt Thoughts I sit here rocking our baby to sleep. In the dim glow of the night light, her room and its furnishings fade away, and with them all the signs of this age. There is no television noise, no ringing cell phone. Not even sirens blaring out the window, a rarity on a summer night in the city. Only the soft, steady whirring of a fan as it cools the evening air, and the tiny green light on the baby monitor, a light so non-intrusive it is either easily forgotten or purposely ignored, even transformed in one’s imagination to the tiny flame of a glowing candle. As my own sleepiness overcomes me, suddenly I’m aware only of my baby, the rocking chair, and myself, and I’m transported to another age. Surely mothers across the generations and around the world have experienced this unique yet universal bond between themselves and their little ones. I think of my mother rocking me in dusty El Paso in 1974, and her mother rocking her in Tampa in 1940. My husband was cradled by his mother in Bogota in the 1960s, and my grandfather by his in Cuba at the turn of the century. Different times, different places, but the same activity, for the same purpose. Comfort, peace, serenity. As Juliana’s grandmother says, “When baby’s with her Mommy, all’s right with the world.” And oh, that feeling when she finally surrenders to sweet slumber and her body melts into mine. In her innocence she isn’t aware that I take as much refuge in her as she in me. It is at that moment that I’d rather be no other place on earth than rocking my baby to sleep. SUNDAY, MAY 3, 2015 (Immediately following the service of worship)
We will be voting on a bid from Frank Sage & Son to install lightning rods on the church
and fellowship hall. We will vote on whether to go ahead with this project, and whether we
should utilize the funds currently designated for paving the parking lot, and further,
whether to obtain the remainder of the funds from the Memorial Fund as several members
have suggested. There are also some funds in the Lightning Rod Fund, which you may
contribute to if you wish. BE SURE TO DESIGNATE YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS.
This is the situation: The existing rod on top of the steeple will be removed and replaced with a new one, including one down to the ground. Ground rods are made of copper and clad steel. Rods on the roof will be a maximum distance of 20 feet apart or less, depending on the length of the roof peak. Rods on top of structure will be made of the same material as cables down to grounding rods. Cost: Aluminum material on the church and fellowship hall is $9,595.00. For copper material, the cost would be $11,330.00. All points where the cables go into the ground will be copper. All work is UL approved, and all connections are designed for aluminum to copper installation. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS AND URGENT MATTER. PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND THIS MEETING.

THE HEIFER PROJECT Thanks to all who contributed to this project. We’re very happy to report we are able to
provide less fortunate families with not one, but TWO pregnant goats and ONE pig.
We have collected over $430, and are roughly $50 shy of purchasing a FOURTH animal. Job well done!!
