Of course two year olds, God bless their soul, are easy to please. It’s the three year old, Paige, that really tried our nerves. Every time we asked her to do anythingwhether it was pick up, or sit down, or come along, she would ask, “Why?” It just got to be non-stop. “Why this,” and “Why that.” Finally we just had to say, “Because Grandma or Grandpa told you.” Now it was an answer that didn’t really satisfy Miss Paige, but at least it got her moving in the right directionwhich is all we ever wanted in the first place. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just trust God enough to keep following and obeying even when we don’t fully understand? Wouldn’t it be nice if God could trust us to do what is right without always having to convince us of the truth of God’s ways? As a grandparent I can tell you, if we could do that it would make things so much easierfor God and for everyone. Take care and many blessings, Pastor Donna

Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus

Letter from the Pastor

I thought we had a wonderful Chicken Dinner! The food was delicious—as always; the weather was

beautiful; and the experience could not be beat. I was very impressed by the way people lingered. It told me

they felt welcome and at home enough to catch up with friends; peek in at the sanctuary; and enjoy the music

and ice cream.

Every comment I heard was a positive one. I want to thank Cindy Buescher for chairing the event. I

also want to thank her dedicated and talented committee, and everyone who helped and worked so hard to make

the day a gracious and glorious success. And, of course, thanks to God—not just for the beautiful day, but also

for the many ways in which we felt the abiding presence of God’s Spirit.

Now, I have for you just a brief grandchild story. The littlest of the three grandkids, Alice, had a

favorite saying. “Alice do it,” she would always insist. It didn’t matter what was happening—whether we were

trying to put on her shoes, snap her into her car seat, or comb her hair, she was sure she could do it all by

herself, and didn’t need any help from anyone. Of course being only two meant that her abilities didn’t quite

measure up to her estimate of herself and before you know it, she would be frustrated and upset and throwing

herself on the ground in tears. Of course it also meant that Carl or I would step in and take over. “Grandma or

Grandpa help you?” we would say; and with just a click or a snap, or a gentle stroke from us, all was well again.

Dealing with Alice made me wonder if sometimes we don’t sound like two-year-olds to God. I think of

the times we insist on doing things our way, or on our own. I think of how independent minded we can be—

certain we can do whatever we want, whenever we want—without needing help or advice from anyone. Then,

of course, reality comes crashing in. How many times does that sort of thinking or behaving get us into a mess

or situation we can’t get out of? It’s probably more times than we can count. Fortunately for us, God continues

to come to our rescue, bring us aid, sit by our side--help us just when we need it most; love us as Love is

pleased to do.

Of course two year olds, God bless their soul, are easy to please. It’s the three year old, Paige, that

really tried our nerves. Every time we asked her to do anything—whether it was pick up, or sit down, or come

along, she would ask, “Why?” It just got to be non-stop. “Why this,” and “Why that.” Finally we just had to

say, “Because Grandma or Grandpa told you.” Now it was an answer that didn’t really satisfy Miss Paige, but

at least it got her moving in the right direction—which is all we ever wanted in the first place.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just trust God enough to keep following and obeying even when we

don’t fully understand? Wouldn’t it be nice if God could trust us to do what is right without always having to

convince us of the truth of God’s ways? As a grandparent I can tell you, if we could do that it would make

things so much easier—for God and for everyone.

Take care and many blessings,

Pastor Donna

September Extra Step – Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child (OCC) gives gift-filled shoe boxes and gospel booklets to children

in desperate situations around the world, some of whom are refugees of civil war, while

others are survivors of a natural disaster or victims of extreme poverty. OCC is often

described as a simple, hands-on mission that aims to teach young people about the power of

Jesus Christ and his healing touch. The boxes often contain small toys, stuffed animals,

school supplies, personal hygiene items, and hard candies.

Visit them on their website: www.samaritanspurse.org/occ

Each atumn, monarch butterflies

migrate from the U.S. to Mexico

and some parts of Southern

California. They fly at speeds

ranging between 12 and 25 mph.

Monarch butterflies are the only

insect that migrates to a warmer

climate that is 2,500 miles away.

Fall is a peak migration time for

many species of birds. The Arctic

Tern journeys about 11,000 miles

each way. That is like going all

the way across the U.S. about 3 ½

times.

According to the National Retail

2013, spending a total of $6.9

billion on candy, costumes, and

decorations.

According to The Nielsen Company,

Americans spent $1.9 billion, in

2013, on candy. That’s around 600

million pounds worth of Hershey

bars, lollipops, Milk Duds,

Twizzlers, and Clark Bars.
