27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels & Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture The tenants in today’s parable murdered because of their greed. They had no respect for either the servants or the son of their landlord. Greed can act like poi-son to an otherwise healthy mind. Certainly it won’t always lead to murder, but more often than not it leads to using people for our own ends or dismissing those who cannot help us get what we want. Treating others this way is never accepta-ble. It is an offense to human dignity and to God who made us in his own image. Ultimately, greed makes us miserable. It fosters discontent for our life and disre-spect for the lives of others. It is certainly not a fruit of the kingdom of God. Be-longing to this heavenly realm means living a life of generosity instead of greedi-ness. Jesus tells us that his kingdom belongs to those who produce its fruit. May we root out the weed of greed and instead cultivate generosity in the vineyard of our hearts. St. Francis of Assisi Feast/Award Every year, on October 4th, we celebrate the feast of our patron: St. Francis of Assisi. We honor a man who loved the Church, who made a difference by caring for the poor and the needy. As we celebrate this feast, we also want to acknowledge people of our parish who live in that spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. I am proud to announce that, this year, the recipient of the St. Francis of Assisi Award is Leanne Stoteru. She has dedicated over 20 years of her hard work to our parish and even more to the Catholic Church at large, for which we are very grateful!!! Congratulations and Many Blessing!!! Sabbatical Update I mentioned in previous weeks that I am planning my sabbatical for Jan through June 2018 and I have some updates to share. During that time I will focus on three different areas: 1)Spiritual - I will take a retreat in Arizona 2)Intellectual - I will be taking classes at The Pastoral Leadership Institute in Colorado and 3)Leisure - I plan to spend some quality time with my family in Poland. Fr. Steve agreed to be the administrator until I come back, and with Fr. Ed, Fr. Rich and our fine staff helping, we will be in good shape to continue forward with all areas of responsibilities Tree Program There are several trees that we dedicated in memory of loved ones. There are few more trees to be replaced, at our beautiful campus, and I was wondering if there are more families who would like to do that this year. There is a cost in-volved with replacing/planting a tree, but if you would be interested in doing something like this in memory of special someone, please, call the office and talk to Paula Belski.

From the moment of our founding in 1882, charity has been the first principle of the Knights of Columbus. We are Catholic men of faith and men of charitable action. Our charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, na-tional and international projects. Our own unique charities include the Christian Refugee Relief Fund, Disas-ter Relief, Ultrasound Initiative, and Coats for Kids. We also partner with international charities including Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity. Through our Building the Domestic Church initiative, Knights and their families have greater opportunities to participate in a variety of activities that deepen their faith, promote the New Evangelization, and strengthen our parishes. "We are answering Pope Francis’ call to go to the peripheries,” Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said. “We can reach half way around the globe to help those in need and we can reach to our neighbor next door. And we do that every day. That makes us witnesses to the faith." If you’d like to be a part of an international organization of nearly 2 million Catholic men whose principal work involves helping others in need, we'd like to meet you and invite you to join us. Call Tom Jensen at 708-558-8940 or speak with any brother knight.

FRIENDS OF ST. FRANCIS This group promotes and provides a social atmosphere, while enhancing friendships and community fellowship for our parish community who are 60 years of age or older. The hospitality group prepares for parish func-tions such as Bingo and card games and special events at Christmas and May.

WELCOMING COMMITTEE The St. Francis Welcoming Ministry reaches out to our newest parishioners, whether they recently moved to the area, converted to Catholicism, returned to their Catholic faith after years of separation, or have recently been baptized into the community of the faithful as in-fants. This task is carried out through the writing of ‘welcome notes’ to new parishioners and parents of newly bap-tized children. It requires very little time commitment and can be completed from home. We provide the script and all the supplies, and we can use a few more letter writers!

SOCIAL COMMITTEE The ministry of this group brings together the members of the community of St. Francis through social activities. This group’s purpose is to plan and organize social ac-tivities of the parish. Parishioners may volunteer for individual events such as:

• Parish Picnic • St. Patrick’s Day

Party • Coffee And... • Fish Fry • Pasta Night, etc.

For the past several weeks, this space will contain information about each of our Parish Ministries. In anticipation of Stewardship Weekend, this feature will give parishioners the opportunity to learn more about areas in which they could get involved.

This week we feature: PARISH LIFE COMMISSION

MISSION TRIP REFLECTION by, Will Giblin

My mission trip experi-ence was a fun one. At first I thought wouldn’t

enjoy it, but in the end it turned out to be a great ex-perience. There were 3 parts to the mission trip, the work, program, and church.

The work part of my mission trip was a good expe-rience that I learned from. Eve-ryone is put in a random group and I got put in a group with all girls, making me the only guy, but in the end it turned out alright. What we did for our work was clean up a child learning center in a ghetto. We worked for a guy named Bill who was an interesting character. He would talk to us in the morning then leave to go to one of his 127 lots to attend to and come back dur-ing lunch. He would then leave again and come back to see us leave for the day. He was a great guy and taught me how to paint an iron fence really well, and he also taught me some paint won't come off your skin unless you use paint thinner. Most of the girls painted in some way, either painting a door to a bird-house looking thing that would be used to store books in the community or one of the girls painted a mural on the side of the children's center. I got to paint the iron fence and do landscaping which I was fine with because I can’t paint for the life of me. Overall, I was happy with the work we accomplished. Our work made a difference in the community, and the neighbors expressed this. They thanked us for our work and I’m glad we were able to clean up the area around them. The second part of the mission trip was program. This was where you assembled in the church area and watched different skits and sang songs all relat-ed to God. At first I didn’t like program because I thought it was really long ( two and a half hours), but by the end of the trip I looked forward to going to program because I couldn’t wait for what would

Page 7: 10/08/17 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK · 2018-10-07 · 2 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK 10/08/17 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time The St. Francis of Assisi community

come next either it be a sing-a-long or a dance party. The lessons I learned in programs were good ones and I think they will stick with me for a while. The final part of the mission trip was the church part. Every morning we had morn-ing mass, which was just like normal mass except we sang a lot more and it was only forty-five minutes. Two of the nights we had four corners and Adora-tion. I thought four cor-ners was alright as was an hour, and I spent most of my time waiting in line for confession, because basically eve-ryone flocked there. The rest of the time I wrote card to the peo-ple I went on the mis-sion trip with. Adoration was interesting. We all walked over to the chapel and reflected on our spirit. Andy the singer was there and sang songs which most people sang along to, but personally I liked adoration because it was a nice, quiet time to talk to God. Overall I had a really good time on the mis-sion trip and would rec-ommend it to anyone who wouldn’t mind spending a week with-out their friends and family helping the com-munity. I had a blast on the mission trip, and I know if you go you will too.

the distressing conditions in which refugees dis-persed throughout the world find themselves, or also to assist migrants and their families.” Gaudium et Spes As a prosperous, first world nation, we have a special responsibility. “The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.” CCC2241 Imagine what it would take for you to leave your com-fortable suburban home and possessions and go to another country with a very different culture and language. THOUGHTS By, Pat Depcik

There was a wonderful presentation offered last month, here at St. Francis, called “Signs and Symbols of Christian Initiation”. It was the chance to feel and under-stand and express your thoughts on the objects which we observe hundreds of times but do not really see. Have you any thoughts about the signature of your faith, you know, the sign of the cross? Have you marked that signature on a child or anoth-er loved one? What did it mean to you? Has anyone marked the sign of the cross on you? What is the meaning of a candle? Does it lead your way with its light or give you warmth and invite you to the table? The table and the Eucharist are the needs to sustain us. Can you picture the breaking of bread and giving it to others? So many things are so availa-ble to us. Oils, incense, read-ings, the rosary, music and art, these are there for you. The holy water vessels and the Baptismal font are on the path to your journey into the sacred and safe place. Fin-gers dip in and out and to the forehead, but why? To truly feel the softness and refresh-ment of the water is a won-derful sense. It is like---- life refreshed. Everyone’s thoughts are different and that’s God’s lovely gift.

There is a Christian song and in the lyrics it says, “Open my eyes, Lord, help me to see your face. Open my ears,

Lord, help me to hear your voice. Open my heart, Lord, help me to love like You.”

Considering current affairs and the political environ-ment, I would like to know what is the Catholic Church’s position on immi-gration? Living a life in the Spirit frequently involves political issues. It is the purpose of this column to accurately explain Catholic teaching. Part three of the cate-chism teaches us how to live a life in Christ. We are one human family and are called as a com-munity of nations to pro-vide “for men’s different needs, both in the fields of social life-such as food supplies, health, educa-tion, labor and also in cer-tain special circumstances which can crop up here and there, e.g., the need to promote the general improvement of develop-ing countries, or to allevi-ate the distressing condi-tions in which refugees dispersed throughout the world find themselves, or also to assist migrants and their families to alleviate

AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

The Narthex is a wonder-ful gathering space with a warm design that provides a great atmosphere of welcome. One early de-sign suggestion that would have added to the space was never built. Where we now have a wall of windows looking south, doors were proposed leading to an outside bal-cony. The narthex would continue outdoors. Be-cause of budget limitations and limited use (winter) we decided not to pursue that idea. The windows add light and contribute to the warm environment. The decision to use them as a way to recognize financial sup-porters came after the construction. We wanted to publicly recognize those who provided financial support. The windows provided a public, yet not ostentatious location, to thank those who made financial sacrifices for con-struction. The original design for the coat room was larger. To provide space for coats of all those at Mass would have required a huge space, so we decided on this smaller space. It works well for small gath-erings, lost and found items, drop off for items being collected and even snow shovels. It gets a lot

of use; but not always for the original intent. Coat rooms In Catholic Churches are not com-mon. Maybe because Catholics are programmed for a quick exit and do not want to get encumbered by a coat room, they have never been popular. As I was writing about the coat room, I recalled that when we were planning the church the committee visited many churches – we wanted to avoid prob-lems other building com-mittees may have encoun-tered as well as “steal” ideas we thought might help. The idea of a coat room came from Fr. Finne-gan at Our Lady of the Woods. Both Fr. Finnegan and Fr. O’Mara, founder of St. Elizabeth Seton, were a great source of help, espe-cially to me. Since their church construction was taking place immediately before ours, I learned from them while their building experience was fresh. They were generous with their time, ideas and sup-port. Looking back, I real-ize I had the rare oppor-tunity to have two neigh-boring pastors building churches at the same time who were so willing to help.

I do not want to give the impression that St. Michaels was not helpful in the early days of St. Francis. They were; but since they had no building projects at this time, these other neighbors provided a unique perspective. An English teacher might use a red pencil on the next paragraph because I am jumping to a new topic, but, in my mind a related connection. The Archdiocese is begin-ning an Archdiocesan pro-ject called Renew My Church. You will learn more about it in the months ahead – it is just beginning. Its focus will encourage interparish co-operation. As I recalled the support I received from our neighbors during con-struction, we have a long history of parishes working together. So St. Francis is well prepared for this new initiative.

Saint Peregrine was healed of a cancerous ulcer on his leg which was considered beyond saving. The fame of this event in 1325 spread rapidly round the western Church. Christians, and especially the sick, began to invoke his name and seek his inter-cession for the relief of their suffering and even for a cure from sickness. The canonization of St. Peregrine in 1726 increased people’s devotion to him which spread to the universal Church. Join us Monday evenings at 7:00 pm in the church, St. Francis of Assisi will be offering a novena to St. Peregrine. The novena will be held through November 13.
