Soon and very soon It is hard to believe that Christmas is tomorrow. The Advent season passed by so fast and here we are, entering Christmas. I decorated my Christmas tree, I am done with my shopping and I did find time to go to confession. I think I am ready and I hope you are too! This is my fifth Christmas at St Fran-cis of Assisi Parish, and I am very excited. It is a most wonderful time of the year! Please join us for our beautiful liturgies on Christmas Eve and Christ-mas Day. Let the celebrations begin! Notes on the Scripture Mary of Nazareth is the most perfect example of what happens when a hu-man being enters fully into partnership with divine life and she is presented to us today, on this 4th and final Sunday of Advent. The doctrine of Incarnation, which we celebrate at Christmas, is about God-made-human, but it could not happen without Mary. When presented with this decision she is troubled, afraid and has questions, but she declares herself the servant of the Lord. She accepts God’s Word, and God accepts hers. One of the Greek names for Mary is Theotokos, or “God-bearer.” As one lis-tens to the readings, which speak about the Ark of God dwelling in a tent, and Jesus dwelling in Mary’s womb, the question to ask ourselves at this point in Advent is, “Are you ready to bear Christ within? Have you made a home for him in your heart?” Are we ready to say, Maranatha; come, Lord Jesus, come!

A little means a lot Most of our lives are made up not of big, dramatic events but little, ordinary ones-many of which seem hard to connect to faith. The things of everyday life, though, can lead you to holiness if you do them with an awareness of the presence of God. God is revealed in the small as well as the great. Bethle-hem was a small town, but a prophecy had said it would be the birthplace of a king. A mustard seed is the smallest of seeds, yet it grows into a large bush, Jesus said; faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains and uproot trees. Little things, even the least, hold the power of big things. Un-leash the power of the little in your life. May the love we show each other, even is a small-little way, change the world around us! May we have a won-derful Christmas!

Fourth Sunday Of Advent

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

My name is Ellen Lebert; this November I was fortunate enough to get to go on a pilgrimage with the parish's youth group to Indianapolis for the Na-tional Catholic Youth Conference. This was my second time going on the trip, I decided to go again because I truly believe the experience en-tirely renews your faith. Over the course of the weekend there were sever-al keynote speakers that were able to spark my faith along with 25,000 other teens. One speaker that I thought was very inspiring was sister Mari-on. Her speech was relatable to many of the teens there, because she tied it in with sports. She herself, played D1 volleyball in col-lege. In your life, you have the choice of defining yourself by home runs, or by strikeouts. Everyone has their failures and accomplishments; it is up to you on how you choose to go on in life. On the last night, the archbishop of Los Angeles led the closing ceremony. His message was sim-ple, but it was something we should all do every-day to deepen our relationship with God. Try to start or end your day with a simple prayer or con-versation with Jesus. Having those few minutes, isolated from all the chaos going on in your life will make a positive impact on your life.

Overall, I am grateful to have gone with the youth group of St. Francis. Sometimes it is challenging as a teengaer to fully understand why our religion is so important and unique. NCYC helps you real-ize why your faith is important to you in a fun and renewing way. I would highly recommend any teens interested in going to the next conference in 2019.

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton Celebrating Christmas is a part of life that is always with us. We have celebrated this day from childhood, and even as we age, we recall the memories of past years. When we gather for Mass on Christmas, we experience masses that are crowded, a parking lot that is filled, music that lifts our heart and Scripture that names the meaning of the day:

THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH

People come to Christ-mas Mass from different places. Some from dis-tant geographic places, all from places result-ing from their experi-ences in life. It is my prayer, and I know one that is shared by Fr. Artur, the other priests and deacons, that all feel welcome in our church this day. We know that some may have been away for a while, others have experienced loss or are questioning their faith; still others over-whelmed by problems. However you find your-self, we pray you feel welcome. Allow yourself

to experience a commu-nity of faith; music that lifts you; and know a God who loves you. WELCOME These weekly articles haven been recollec-tions of the building of our church, both our buildings as well as our community. At Christ-mas, I also recall mem-ories from the past. I have a vivid memory of my first Christmas at St. Francis. We were bare-ly two months old. I wondered if anyone would come to a store-front to celebrate Christ-mas. ST. WALGREENS I had always assumed a parish owned a nativity set. After two months, I realized the limits of such an assumption. Like everything else, we had none, and so need-ed to get one. Not wanting to be seen by the new congregation as the money pastor, I was reluctant to ask for money. I also realized that an angel was not going to deliver a Nativi-ty set, so I asked this new congregation. No one complained, all were pleased to partici-pate, and generous in

their gifts. We pur-chased a beautiful nativ-ity set; perfect for our space. Christmas Mass needs music. For this angels did come. Right before Christmas, out of the blue, I received a call from a St. Michaels choir person. They asked if some of their members could sing at our 10:00 Christmas Eve mass. Without ask-ing any questions, I said yes! - they would be welcome. They would also bring an accompa-nist. So we had won-derful music at our first Christmas Mass. I was worried because after only two months we were not well known. Most would be unaware of an interior where we had worked to provide a “church” feel; it was decorated for Christ-mas, we had our new Nativity set; and a sea-soned choir. All ready. Frequently at Christmas I speak of the surprise of God. The week be-fore our first Christmas I did receive a surprise. The store next to us had newly rented and were preparing for an opening

GOD’S PROMISE © J.S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The lengthy passage from Samuel is a won-derful exposition of God's promise to the house of David: that his throne would forever be gloriously occupied by his descendants. Hidden in the mystery of the prophecy is the promise of the Savior, the Messiah, Son of God and Son of David.

after the first of the year. (This is currently Paddy B’s) A few days before I was at the Worship Center. As I drive in, I see in the large windows huge signs announcing my new neighbor: Coming Soon- SPIKES HOT DOGS! While I knew that I had no control over who was to be my neighbor, I did not think a Hot Dog restaurant would be a draw to our little church. I prayed, “Lord a year ago I celebrated Mass in a small church in Lake Forest, now I am between Spikes Hot dogs and Walgreens. You are indeed the God of surprise”. The Word made Flesh – the wonder and sur-prise of God. How blest I am!

CHRISTMAS

BLESSINGS TO ALL!

The Sacred Heart Mission Ministry culminat-ed its first year with a joyous Christmas cele-bration. Our volunteers joined in a heartfelt Mass and followed by the serving of a warm lunch and gift giving of ornaments, Christ-mas stockings and homemade cookies. It was a grand way to end the first year of our adult mission. Our plans are to continue to visit Sacred Heart Mission on the first Sunday of every month. We invite you to join us on Sunday, January 7th for a faith filled day of prayer and kindness with the loving people of Sa-cred Heart Mission. This month we hope to fill the void in the pantry by providing paper goods such as toi-let tissue and paper towels. Donations are welcome and may be dropped off at the Par-ish office. If you would like to join us, please contact Cathy Kara, via email at [email protected] or call via cell 708-542-7960, We will be departing via caravan promptly at 10:30 from the Upton Hall side of the parking lot (SE side). Thank you for bringing so much joy to the

people of Sacred Heart Mission.

SACRED HEART MISSION NEXT EVENT: SUNDAY, JANUARY 7

The prophet Nathan, speaking in God's name, poetically turns around David's plan to build a house for God, and announces God's plan to build a "house," that is, a dynasty for David. From this house of Da-vid will come the Messi-

ah, the Christ, not in kingly splendor as Da-vid ruled, but as a hum-ble man, destined to rule forever and over all. When God gives a gift, it's amazing what we are given--so different from what we ever could have imagined.
