2 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK 06/11/17

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels And Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” It’s easy to take this formula for granted. Every time we attend Mass, we make the sign of the cross and say, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Many of us also make the sign of the cross be-fore meals or to begin our personal prayers. Because we are so used to hearing this Trinitarian reference to the one God in three persons, we might tend to gloss over its significance. But today, on the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, we stop to remind ourselves what this really means. Perhaps the most beautiful part of this great mystery of God’s nature is what it means for us. We believe in a God whose very essence is made up of loving relation-ships between three divine persons. It follows that, as people made in God’s image (cf. Gn 1:27), we are to live in loving relationships. We are made to love: to love God, to love one another, and to love our-selves. Our God is not a force, a power, or an idea. Our God is a per-sonal God who loves each of us and calls us to do the same. CJB Fundraiser The sponsoring parishes of our Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School are coming together to hold our second “Raise the Roof” fundraiser and party. This year our party will be held at St. Elizabeth Seaton Parish on June 16th and have a “Hawaiian Luau” theme. In addition to the party we are also holding a cash raffle. Both, ($20) event and ($100) raffle tickets are available in the narthex. Please check the bulletin for more information and support our school. Neighborhood Meetings As Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “I will come to your house today”. Our parish transformation plan included meeting in the neighborhood. We, myself and Sr. Gael, wonder if you would be willing to host a neighbor-hood gathering at your home. We would like to meet with you and whomever you would invite. This gives us an opportunity to connect and share with you. The focus of our conversation is to learn how we might serve you better; your needs and concerns. Please, contact me or Sr. Gael if you are willing to do it later this summer or fall.

ARE YOU INTERESTED in becoming a

MINISTER OF PRAISE? What does it mean?

As a Minister of Praise you promise to pray and offer your sacrifices and sufferings and joys for the needs of the parish, the universal church and all prayer requests listed in our parish book of intercessions (located near the chapel). The pastor or designated parish staff member sends all ministers of praise a letter each month naming specific prayer intentions for that month. All parishioners are assured of being prayed for daily. To apply simply complete a form (located in the nar-thex pamphlet rack) and drop it off at the office or place in the collection basket. Thank you for considering this wonderful ministry.

I want to reflect on the large win-dows – this week the front and next week the back. A few week ago I made the dis-tinction between asking the ques-tions, “what does this mean?” and/or “what does this say?” as ways to think about the various liturgical pieces in our church. The front window is more appre-ciated by reflecting on what it says to you; the back window by reflecting on what it means. The windows in the church and the Eucharistic chapel were de-signed by Chris Boti of Boti Studi-os, Evanston. (Chris died sud-denly of a heart attack in 2000.) Selecting the design was a chal-lenge – the artist presents only a drawing, relatively small, for win-dows so large. The committee was asked to make an educated guess about the final product from a limited image. We did visit the studio and saw the work in progress. For a number of reasons we pushed to get the windows com-pleted. Practically, the sun com-ing into the large window with only clear glass made sitting in many parts of the church difficult; secondly we wanted the religious impact stained glass provides. They were installed in December of 1995 a few months after the church was completed. The small windows around the church are designed to accept stained glass. The upper clearstory is intended to always allow natural light. Overall, the front window takes elements of the altar and uses those images as design elements in the window. The front window hopes to provide background for the centrality of what happens at the altar. The back window fo-cuses on the sacraments of initia-

ious lime green. The lime green and hideous orange were too much for me. The colors at the center of this window represent changes I made after installation. One of the few unilateral deci-sions I made. I believe the current muted cen-ter is more prayerful than a gar-ish orange and lime. Next week: the rear window.

tion and the mission of the bap-tized as they exit church. The design used for the outer ring, in both windows, is taken from the shape of the ends of the brass which are within the wood of the monumental cross. The focus of those ends, within the cross, is to communicate self-giving, the needed response to the self-giving of Jesus. The image, from the cross, trans-lated into glass, is repeated in all the church windows. Repeating this design, provides both unity to the windows and the church. And with the connection to the cross, a reminder of mission. In the front window, the next ring is taken from the altar design. The carvings on the altar pillar capitols, besides the Celtic ropes, contain a unique element not easily seen or honestly under-stood. Intertwined with the ropes are birds. I was never sure why the artist used such an image except perhaps to reference an image of flight, perhaps pointing to the heavens. The brown ring replicates those pillar carvings. There are 12 pillars, in four groups of three, holding the altar. Twelve and three are significant religious numbers. There are more than 12 pillars in the win-dow. Pillars are included in the window because they are in the altar; the number used, as far as I know, was determined without any special meaning; the number selected just to look appropriate for the size for the window.

When the window was first in-stalled, I was disappointed. The circle at the center was a hideous orange. Maybe it was meant to be a stand out feature, the sun, but it looked garish. And the dark green rays were an obnox-

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION By, Diane Ostrowski

Spiritual direction is an ancient ministry of the church going back to the time of Jesus and the mo-nastic lifestyle where the monks would act as spiritual directors for each other. It can be described as a sacred journey, holy listen-ing and/or spiritual companion-ship. It is never easy to talk about what is most personal or sacred to us – our deepest hopes, fears and dreams; our relationship with God, but the results of such con-versations are immense and awe-inspiring. And, no one needs to walk the spiritual path alone. The real spiritual director during a session is God. God touches the human heart directly. Jesus has so much more he wants us to see and do than we can imag-ine.

fall away, none of them stay that all will fall away. When Jesus established the Church, he said the gates of hell would not pre-vail against it. Mt 16:18 Old Tes-tament prophecies talk about the kingdom of God (the Church) that will not be destroyed but last forever. Dn 2:44, Is 9:6-7, Dn 7:13-14 History shows us that there was no total apostasy. Almost all the apostles died for their faith. We have a 2,000-year history of popes and bishops, the succes-sors of Peter and the apostles. We have a history of church councils that defined doctrine, refuted heresy and gave us the bible. Our Church history is full of saints that were martyred for their steadfast faith.

I was unloading my groceries from the car when a pleasant woman came up to me talking about her church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints. She gave me some literature. What is meant by the total apostasy? This is a great opportunity for you to evangelize to this woman! Enter into a conversation and be a witness to your Catholic faith. The Church of the Latter-day-Saints is commonly known as Mormonism. One of their main tenets comes from their founder, Joseph Smith, in 1830. Mormons believe that their church is the restored church after a total fall-ing away or total apostasy of the true church established by Jesus Christ. Apostasy means a renunciation of religious faith or an abandon-ment of the faith. (Webster’s dic-tionary) The Mormons believe there was a universal apostasy that began even in the time of the apostles. With the loss of the gospel people went into a moral darkness that persists to this day except in the Mormon church where the gospel has been re-stored. The bible and history proves this is false. Even though there are scriptures that say that some will

I’M GLAD YOU ASKED THAT QUESTION by, Sue Flanagan

THOUGHTS by, Pat Depcik

Recently, I attended the “Grandparents Day” program at a nearby parochial grammar school. It was a musical fest that is put on yearly and this was my fifth attendance. Every grade from kindergarten to eight performs and there is usu-ally a main theme. Last year it was country and western. This year it was baseball. The greatest thing about this program, aside from seeing your own grand kids performing, is that every single child in every single grade on that stage gives the performance of a lifetime. The first time I witnessed this concert of sorts, I was mesmer-ized by the absolute participation in the singing and movements of this entire student body. So, in the following years, I carefully watched to see if it was just my enthusiasm or were they really into it. Well, five years later, they are really into it. How refreshing to start with a prayer and a salute to all that is

Catholic upbringing and educa-tion. At the end, a recognition, ( a flower) from each child who’s grandparent was no longer there was placed on the stage. You wonder if there will be a flower for you next year. Will these children remember, and will they carry the joy that filled the gym-nasium? Will they remember how well they worked hard and to-gether?

Maybe we’ll never know, so, the time is now to keep showing and teaching children about love and respect for all things because they belong to God. It’s done by example and patience and listen-ing to what they have to say. They are the future, we are the example.

By deciding to journey with a spiritual director, we are telling Jesus that we want to know, love and follow Him more each day. Is God inviting you into a closer relationship with HIM? Do you want to create sacred space for God in your life? Are you long-ing to share reverence and savor your experiences of God with a trusted companion? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, I invite you to consider spiritual direction. Two people (the director and the di-rectee) come together to listen, share and pray as they journey into the Sacred. For more information about spir-itual direction, contact our parish office at [email protected]

Fish Fry and Pasta Dinner Thank You!

During the Lenten season this year, the So-cial Committee hosted a fish fry and a pasta night. Those in attendance enjoyed delicious food catered by Salinas for the fish fry and RoccoVino’s catered the pasta night. These were great nights to share a Lenten meal with fellow parishioners. In order for these events to be as successful as they were requires many hands. So, we thank everyone on the Social Committee and their families: Lee Knapik, Grace McGuire, Jan Ota, Joe and Teri Sankey, Kathy and Ron Craven, Sharon Moe, James and Miran-da Arredondo, Jackie and Chuck Clifford, Jeff and Paula Belski, Tim and Linda McCormick and Sister Gael. Thank you for all your efforts to make these events successful! We also would like to thank the office staff! They assisted in selling tickets, taking care of financial issues, setting up/taking down our floor plan. Last, but not least, we would like to thank the teens that volunteered their time for Commu-nity Service. Thank you Miranda Arredondo, Charlie DeMatteo, Madison McGreal, Lauren Schmidt, Ethan McCormick, Anthony Giun-toli, Eric Hill, William O, Rachel Hernandez, and Maggie Nolan. The teens were wonder-ful and really helped to make this a great suc-cess. So we sincerely thank each and every one of you! If we mistakenly excluded someone, please know it was an oversight and we truly thank you for your efforts! If you weren’t able to make it to this year’s fish fry or pasta dinner, please try to come to next year’s events. It was truly a great event and we missed you!
