Solemnity of Pentecost Dear Parishioners, Everybody loves birthdays, right? I know I do, whether the birthday belongs to me, my kids and grandkids or friends. The essence of birthday parties is the celebration of life. We are glad our friends and family were born, so we celebrate. God gives us life and at birthday parties, we thank him for our beloved. Much of the world celebrates Jesus’ birthday — Christmas! We are especially thankful for his life, which he gave up for us. Do you know that this weekend is our Catholic Church’s birthday? This is

Pentecost, 50 days after Easter. How did that become our church’s birthday? Look for a moment at today’s readings; they are filled with the Holy Spirit, the Advocate Jesus sent to us when he ascended to our Father. With the receipt of the Holy Spirit and the departure of Jesus, the followers of Jesus had to organize and sustain themselves; they didn’t have Jesus’ charismatic leadership and decision-making to guide them. That moment was the birth of our Church, the structure that developed to sustain the followers of the Way. As our Church grew, the structure grew in size and complexity until we have today’s hierarchy, support, and governance.

What is the purpose of this structure, we might ask on this birthday. When we look with a negative eye, we see some corruption, quite a bit of sexism, and some rigidity that seems far from the love and peace that Jesus taught. When we look with a positive eye, we see a Pope who inspires with his simple message of love and forgiveness — mercy; we see legions of people serving the poor, the sick, the dying, the imprisoned, the oppressed. We are over 1 billion strong and we do a lot of good in the world. This is our baptismal call: to love one another as Jesus loves us.

So many Catholic organizations live out the faith, from Catholic Worker communities to Maryknoll and Jesuit missionaries, to Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services, Catholic hospitals and schools all over the world, our own Huautla water project and Mexico Mission. All of these are doing God’s good work for and with our brothers and sisters. Thanks be to God that on Pentecost 2016 years ago our church stood on its own after Jesus left this earth.

Peace,

Paz,

Solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad

class each week, BUT we look forward to seeing each of you at Mass each week!! As a reminder: All First Year Parents this year must continue to sign in for Mass each week in order for their children to be eligible for preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist next September. We have new registration forms for our classes which will begin in September. Please call our office for further information. Our number is 408.847.2652.

Something to think about..... This weekend is Pentecost Sunday!! We celebrate the Holy Spirit coming to the Apostles and filling them with God's love!! Who is the Holy Spirit?? The third Person of the Trinity is the Holy Spirit and every time we get some little glimpse of Jesus, whether it’s a host turning into the Real Body of Jesus at Mass or an interaction that prompts you to mention Jesus to someone, the Holy Spirit is at work. The concept is a little harder to grasp because we don’t see Him, but we can see the results of His work and Scripture and Tradition offer lots of symbols that help us bring the picture more clearly into focus. Fire, water, oil, a dove… the list goes on and all are ways to help us build our relationship with the third person of the Holy Trinity.

SV GIVES UPDATE Thank you to everyone who gave to St. Mary School on May 3rd during Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s 24-hour fundraising effort, SV Gives. We are extremely grateful for everyone’s generous donations. Thank you for supporting SMS!

WEEKEND LITURGY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS MAY 15, 2016 – SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST

1. Many of us have advocated for a child, an aging parent, a sick spouse, or a dear friend. The work of an advocate can be time consuming and exhausting.

2. Jesus promises us an Advocate who will be with us always to guide and help us – the Holy Spirit. As we celebrate Pentecost may we pledge to pray each day for the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

3. How blessed we are that the Holy Spirit will help teach us everything and remind us of all that Jesus taught!

SMS WELCOMES BACK THE CLASS OF 2012! It was great to welcome back the SMS Class of 2012 for the annual reunion of high school seniors. It was an evening of reminiscing, pizza and fun. We are so happy they came “back home” to St. Mary School and wish them the best of luck as they will be leaving high school behind and moving onto their futures – bright ones we know! We are so proud of our alumni and wish them well as they start college in the fall!

SPAGHETTI DINNER WRAP UP The spring Spaghetti Dinner on May 6th was a great success! The sales for the dinner grossed $25,534, making it the best Spring dinner we’ve ever had! The top seller for the school was 3rd grader Toni Marie McIntire with sales of $2,086 and the 3rd grade was the TOP SELLING CLASS! As a class, they sold $4,363. St. Mary School is very grateful to Spaghetti Dinner Chairs, John Doyle and Emmet McCarthy, Sauce Chef Rich Janisch, the entire Men’s Club for their leadership and to all of the parents and students who helped make the night so wonderful. A big thank you also goes out to our generous community donors: Dave Leal, NorCal Portable Services, George Chiala Farms, Earthbound Farms, Christopher Ranch and Zbest Products.
