LaBute New Theatre Festival
The St Louis Actor’s Studio presents the 2016 LaBute New Theatre Festival July 08 through July 31. The festival was launched in 2013 to honor playwright Neil LaBute. A distinguished writer for both stage and screen, LaBute is the author of dramas including “In the Com-pany of Men,” “Reasons to be Pretty” and “Fat Pig.”
The St. Louis Actors’ Studio, as stated on their web site, is committed to bringing engaging theatrical experiences to the community of actors, writers, producers, filmmakers and all patrons of the arts. The mission of STLAS is to provide an ensemble environment that fosters learning and artistic expression by producing existing and original collaborative theatre. Towards that goal the LaBute New Theatre Festival is open to both professional playwrights and to high school students just embarking on a potential career in the theater.
The Festival consists of two presentations. The professional submissions will be presented in two sets of four plays each over a two week period at the Gaslight Theater. Each set will begin with a new play written for the Festival by Neil LaBute. The High School Finalists whose plays have been accepted by the Festival will be presented in readings at the Gaslight Theater Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 11 am. Admission to the student play readings is free.
The Gaslight Theater is located at 358 North Boyle Avenue in Gas-light Square. Historic Gaslight Square was the name given to the St. Louis entertainment district built in the mid-1950s. The district known for gaslights and ornate Victorian style architecture quickly became a thriving entertainment district often compared to Bour-bon Street in New Orleans. The Square occupies the area surround-ing Olive and Boyle Streets in St. Louis’ Central West End.
For complete information about the St. Louis Actor’s Studio and the LaBute New Theatre Festival please visit them on the web at stlas.org and click on LaBute New Theatre Festival.
