Thank you for the success of our Bazaar!

T he Bazaar is already over … 4 amazing days! It was so beautiful to see you all there together. Truly, God gave us success for our big event, not only because we had per-fect weather but because we had marvelous people, committed to bring about our Ba-

zaar, from the beginning until the end. I would like to take a moment to personally thank all the members of this year’s committee, who during the preparation and throughout the event, maintained this beautiful spirit, starting with our Chair, Edmund LoPresti and his family, and to his whole team. Together, by God’s grace you as our captain inspired everyone and truly led the way to the success of this Bazaar. A heartfelt thank you to the hundreds of dedicated volunteers who generously gave their time and talents during the event: At the Bake Sale; to Theresa Los and her wonderful family and to all those who baked, purchased and supported the Vendet-ta Dolce Bakery, including a special thanks to Mihelic's Shop and Save on Route 8 for providing the bags and boxes needed to keep everything fresh and neat. Everyone raved about special care they received while they shopped. Thanks to our Banker; Bea Lynch and her excellent and loyal staff. The “Bank” requires hours and hours over and beyond the evening schedule of the bazaar. Bea and her staff are extremely attentive to every detail of accounting. To our bartender at the Beer Garden, George Roberts. George maintains a fun gathering place for everyone while at the same time provides supervision of minors and the safety of everyone; just the way it should always be at a church bazaar. George and his team are the best! Thanks to Meghan DePhillips, Regina McManus and Dennis McManus who meticulously managed the sale of the Big Raffle and to Auggie Mazza for the Fifty-Fifty. Auggie walked at least 100 miles during the week selling the tickets for the Fifty-Fifty! He was our very own “road-runner”! Thank you to Len and Melanie Kachmar, for the best Book Store in the city. They start their organization of the store weeks in advance, lugging in all those books, sorting them, cleaning them and making sure each book is a worthwhile choice. They and their friends are also incredible in filling our bags with books for only $2.00! Our Book Sale is a favorite attraction for many people who patronize our bazaar simply to buy our choice of books. Thank you to Meredith Cotis for the beautiful Bazaar Booklet and to Thomas Hopkins for providing the Grounds Map. It is amazing how many neighbors and visitors come to our bazaar. As our guests, they feel even more welcome because of these handy aids that make navigating our grounds so much easier. Thanks to Michelle Snyder at the Chinese Auction: the baskets were incredibly amazing! There are not too many other ba-zaars or festivals in our entire Diocese that can boast of a Chinese Auction that could compare to what Michelle and her com-mittee accomplished for us. The Chinese Auction was the biggest delight for so many people, especially many, many people that marveled at what was offered. Father Sweeney was so funny while he called each winner. He was ready for sleep when he finished, there were so many baskets of beautiful prizes. To Meg Hough and Doreen Longmore and her tireless team who marvelously organized the Flea Market and the side table of goodies. Father Joe wants to particularly thank the women for putting up with him and his special appraisals. By the way, Meg…who ended up with the antique Staffordshire turrine with the rare, royal Austrian coat of arms? He promises to behave next year! The Bazaar could never have been a success without the organization of the Food Committee, including the sale of the tick-ets. Thanks to Monica Kiniry and her team and a special thanks to Sam Wertz for the Funnel Cake Booth and Cotton Can-dy Booth. The Food booths demand more work than anyone can probably imagine; especially in the heat of the kitchens in August. It was inspiring how efficiently people were served but even more inspiring that the Food workers greeted every cus-tomer in such a friendly and patient way. That was due to the friendship Monica and her team enjoy with each other. They remained truly dedicated to the cause even during this difficult year. Thanks to the organizers of all the Games and Prizes, Colleen Knecht and Karen Barcelona and to Julie Schivins for keeping our children happy at the Kid Zone. It was wonderful seeing so many young families with us. Our bazaar focuses on families and children, providing them with an enjoyable summer night out. That makes the hard work behind these booths and the Kid Zone worthwhile in itself. Thanks to Tisha Roney for organizing the parade. You will not find another church bazaar anywhere that opens with a parade that can match Saint Raphael’s. Tisha is an ‘organizer par excellence” and managed the wonderful parade with a minimal budget. How she does it, we don’t know. It’s definitely because she loves making people happy and as a result everyone will do anything for her in return. Everyone loves a parade and our parade is a gift to our Morningside neighborhood. To Bob DiGiacomo and Vince Cugini for the security during the 4 days of festivities. Safety is an “absolute must” these days. Bob and Vince were there for us the whole way, even finding us extra help to make sure our people were protected and watched over. (For a funny story, ask Bob and Vince about what Father Joe almost did to them when he saw them “loitering” around late at night on Thursday of the bazaar!) Father Joe is getting old and doesn’t always remember members of his flock yet! It’s a great story. Thanks for the voice of the event, our announcer Tony Costa (our own Voice of Kennywood!) and to Nan Pishcke and Amy Wienand for all their huge support. Thank you to all of you for your unwavering support and generosity over the 4 days of festivities, starting with the parishion-ers of St. Raphael, the visitors and guests, those who cheered us along the parade and to those who paid respect at the proces-sion.

Very special thanks to the out-pouring of neighborly love from so many of the parishioners of Sacred Heart, who together with us, form this vibrant Grouping. The school families of Sacred Heart were exceptionally helpful. They made up for us during a gap when we needed volunteers at the last minute. Mrs. Taylor, principal of Sacred Heart School sent out a rousing appeal for more volunteers and the school parents responded immediately. That was very moving. The people from Sacred Heart also helped us reach almost the same proceeds as previous years with the Big Raffle. These are signs of the magnificent new parish we are going to form. There is a grouping in the Wexford area that cleverly claims the unique title of “The Greatest Grouping”! Father Joe kiddingly challenged their young, energetic, bright Administrator that by this time next year our own grouping will merit taking away that title from his Grouping. The Administrator accepted the challenge, so let’s move forward everyone. We will be the Greatest Grouping. Thanks for the constant support of the local Pittsburgh community leaders, especially the Council members, the Police and Fire Departments. We are so proud of our local leaders and public servants. They have proven not only their leadership but their friendship with all of us in this local community. To our Sponsorships team, led by Betty McKibben and to all our sponsors (we will list them in our next bulletin), thank you! Betty personally canvasses our entire region securing our Sponsors. Sponsorships help all of our bazaar booths purchase their supplies so that most of what they take in is profit. That is only right since everyone works so hard to help the bazaar results. Thank you to Joe Bonifate, his family, his company workers and his team for the set-up of all the stands and for tearing them down. No one needs to tell us the amount of hard work that goes into this committee. We see it with our eyes long before and long after the bazaar. Joe and his good people are here hard at work for weeks. We owe them so much thanks; more than we can ever express. Thanks to Nino Castellano and Nick Iezzi for providing the electric system. Nick and his neighbors are true champions for all that you did. Everything went without a hitch due to their planning and managing the power system with efficiency and safety in mind. Thanks also to the maintenance men who came to our rescue at the last minute when we really didn’t know what we were go-ing to do with the lawn and garden (Doug Csupak, Ryan Csupak (Sacred Heart Staff), and Mike Ryan, Noah Pepmeyer, Nino Castellano). Very special thanks to Mark Shepherd overseeing and preparing the new members of the Crew. Mark was exceptional in what he helped to pull together for us when we were at a loss of what to do with a hired maintenance staff like we once were able to have. Once again, thank you to Rocco and Vincenza Didomenico and their family and former citizens of Maierato for their devo-tion to Saint Rocco and for planning this beautiful Mass and outdoor procession. È stato un giorno meraviglioso per tutti noi! Father Joe commented to Rocco and his committee members during the firework display, “Rocco, the lovely opera singer per-forming on stage to the background of the fantastic fireworks display make this night every bit as wonderful as the Fourth of July on the Mall in Washington D.C., the nation’s capital”. Rocco responded in true form and without any hesitation, :”Father Joe, what do you mean?…this is better than Washington D.C.!!!” What a great man! This is another reason why all of us can look to a bright future for this part of Church! We all carry that positive spirit, just like Rocco! Thank you to the office staff for your help in coordinating everything as well as you did, even under the tremendous pressure and tension of the last-minute closing of our school. You were valiant in keeping up on everything. Barb, you especially were masterful in the way you helped everyone. And to all those that I may have forgotten to mention or was unaware of the way you helped. Let me know and I will personal-ly acknowledge what you did and thank you the way you deserve. I know there are still many that may be in this category. I apologize and hope you know I am grateful for everything everyone did. … last but not least, thank you to Our Lord and Sav-ior Jesus Christ and for His inspiration and for watching over us during these days and forever!

The Fire of Joy How St. Philip Neri Inspired Newman

This September, join us on Monday evenings from 7–8 pm for a study of St. Philip Neri’s influence on John Henry Newman. St. Philip (1515-1595), “the Third Apostle of Rome”, is remembered for his contemplative spirituality, but also for bringing a spirit of humor and lightheartedness to his practice of the faith. These Monday evening discussions will present an opportunity to learn more about St. Philip’s faith and spirituality, as well as his influence upon John Henry Newman (1801-1890). The cost is $20. This registration fee will help to cover the cost of a text on St. Philip, which will be handed out to participants at the beginning of the first session. Please RSVP at newmanstudies.org/neri-and-newman or by emailing [email protected]. The deadline for registration is September 7. •Sept 9: The Life of St. Philip Neri •Sept 16: The Spirituality of St. Philip Neri •Sept 23: Founding of the Oratory •Sept 30: St. Philip’s Influence on Newman
