WELCOME TO OUR NEWLY BAPTIZED!

During the pandemic we continue to welcome new members to our parish community and the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Baptism. This week we welcome:

Lamek Medhane Abraham

May you always know God’s love for you and the prayers and support of our parish community.

#sendyourhug

On July 26, the Memorial of Sts. Joachim and Anne, parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus, and the patron saints of grandparents, Pope Francis asked the young people of the world to reach out to the elderly, especially during this pandemic. He asked our young people to #sendyourhug in creative ways, perhaps a phone call or send a letter, email or picture. This long weekend is a great opportunity to participate in this challenge! Check out the post on the St. Francis website for information about sharing how you #sendyourhug with others through social media.

CONTEMPLATING CREATION

DURING COVID-19 Erika Toffelmire, from St. Jerome's University Catholic Community, has created a resource to provide spiritual support during the summer months, and to help people connect their lives to the creation story. Each week there are scripture readings, reflections and suggested activities you can do. Check out the page on our website by clicking here for a link to the whole resource.

Continue to watch our website

www.stfranciskw.ca for interesting content posted Monday to Friday each week.

We want to stay connected with you, whether you are able to join us at

Mass or need to stay home for now. Be assured of our prayers for you!

An Update from our 60th Anniversary Cmte

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Because of COVID-19 we are rethinking all our plans to celebrate our 60th Anniversary, and coming up with creative ways to add to the celebration which don’t require us gathering together. To that end we are going through the archives and pulling together pictures from the past 60 years of living our faith together. We hope to put a selection of pictures together to create a video tribute to the past 60 years, but we have some holes in the archives!

Do you have any pictures of activities at St. Francis of Assisi Parish

from the 70’s, from our 50th Anniversary celebrations, or from the past 10 years?

If you have any pictures from those years, could you please email them to St. Francis? If you have no way to scan and email them please call the parish to make an appointment to come in and we will scan them while you wait. We would like to have all the pictures by August 23rd. Thank you very much for helping us fill in our gaps! More updates from the committee will be forthcoming as news is available on our other projects and celebrations.

Thank you to all volunteers and to the parishioners of St. Francis for their continued support of our parish!

The Parish Office will be closed

Monday August 3 for the Civic Holiday. Have a blessed long weekend!

The View from Fr. Raph’s Window…

As some of you may have seen in last week’s bulletin, I’m assisting with a Virtual Pilgrimage this coming week, from August 1st to 8th. It was originally an eight day walking pilgrimage that began in 2003, from Ignatius Jesuit Centre in Guelph to the Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland. I participated two or three times in my university years, and recently was invited to join once again in 2019. I was looking forward to going again, but like everyone else around the world, my plans had to change. The idea behind the Virtual Pilgrimage is not to re-create the pilgrimage experience, but to offer the essential elements – through virtual means.

This is in no way an advertisement or a promotion. But the pilgrimage has been on my mind lately, and so I thought I’d share three lessons that pilgrimage has taught me about Christian Life:

The Christian Life is a journey. Unforeseen things happen along the way that are often outside our control, like weather, injuries, and route obstructions. But we can’t just stop, or give up. We’re going somewhere, and we need to keep moving forward, with the help of others.

The Christian Life is a communal journey. On a pilgrimage, people come from different backgrounds – personal histories, faith traditions or lack thereof, reasons for doing the pilgrimage – and yet we find ourselves together. The sheer quantity of time spent together sharing food, laughter and experiences, helping one another, and even walking together in silence, can break down barriers and become a little foretaste of the Communion of Saints.

Third, the Christian Life is not about proving your worth. This particular pilgrimage has been dedicated to the Canadian Martyrs, and we often say: “we’re here to celebrate the martyrs, not to make them.” Just like how God gives different gifts to different people, there are different roles on a pilgrimage, and accepting our limitations that arise can give us the opportunity to discover other essential roles we did not know about, which make

the pilgrimage possible – like the support vehicles, the set up crew, etc. From the records that have been handed down to us, the Canadian Martyrs seem to have learned these lessons first-hand in their missionary work among the First Nations people. And it helped them witness to the Gospel way of life, which they ultimately signed in their blood.

Camp Brebeuf Looking for Support Camp Brebeuf, run by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), has been shut down since March 13 due to COVID-19. On May 19 the Provincial Government made the decision to cancel all overnight camping programs for the summer of 2020, with a potential for day camps to operate under strict guidelines. With the loss of their spring and likely fall Outdoor Education Program, as well as the overnight program for the summer of 2020, the future existence of the entire CYO is in the balance.

What can we do? First, please pray for all those

affected by Camp Brebeuf’s closure, the employees, the kids and their families. If you are able, please consider donating to Camp Brebeuf through their online campaign. You can learn all about it on their website, www.campbrebeuf.ca/fundraiser.

Camp Brebeuf does plan to operate

Summer Day Camp, you can learn more and

register by clicking here.
