“LEGACY IS THE DARKER SIDE OF MY SOUND. THESE CYMBALS ARE VIBRANT, TRASHY

AND BEAUTIFUL, ALL AT ONCE.”– DAVE WECKL

“‘Tone Texture’ is what makes Legacy special. These cymbals have a dark,

musical color that encompasses the full tonal spectrum but digs way down

deep. The rides put out a cushion of sound. The crashes are punchy but

complex. And for something completely different there’s the O-Zone Ride.

I play Legacy alone, or mix them with my brighter sounding HHX Evolution

set-up. With all this tone texture, it’s easy to find yourself in Legacy.” Because Sound Matters

For more than a quarter century, Winter Guard International has brought young

April 20, 2006

It is with particular pride that I welcome all the performers, instructors, boosters, and fans gathered once again for one of the premier pageantry events in the world: the WGI Percussion World Championships.

It is truly a wonder to watch thousands of performers knowing that each has anindividual story that brings them to this moment. The struggle to master a particularskill or overcome performance nerves can be a metamorphosis in a person’sdevelopment. While we see the end result only the individual knows the road it tookto get here. That deserves an outpouring of appreciation from all of us privileged towitness the culmination of their efforts.

All this vitality would not be possible without support. Our sponsors play a major rolein shaping our organization and this event. Our judges and volunteers are unsungheroes putting in long hours, traveling great distances, and dedicating themselvestowards providing an “experience” for all our performers. You have my eternal thanksand respect.

As WGI heads into its’ thirtieth anniversary, the future remains bright. We all leavethis weekend treasuring the moments that made 2006 and looking towards evenhigher goals as we enter the next decade.

Welcometo Dayton

Welcome to Dayton

Welcome

Over the last several years, it has been my sincere honor to produce numerous articles for Winter GuardInternational, a privilege that has allowed me to meet and write about so many fascinating people. From brilliant designers and instructors — many of whom have been around WGI since its humble beginnings in the 70’s — to enthusiastic young performers experiencing the thrill of Championships for the first time, I never cease to be amazed by the colorful spectrum of delightful, inspiring, challenging, and often hystericalpersonalities which our activity seems to attract.

Whether I marched or taught withthem, stood in front of them as aninstructor, or have written an articleabout them, I find it impossible towalk more than a few feet in theUniversity of Dayton arena and notrun into someone I know. I’d like tosay this happens because I’m themost popular person here, butthat's certainly not the case! Thefact is that most everyone here ishaving a very similar experience.

One of my favorite things to doduring Championships weekend is towalk around the arena and observepeople. I always see throngs ofattendees laughing, smiling, huggingand sometimes even crying. Fromthe parking lot to the souvenir area, and the warm-up tent to theconcession stands, everywhere youlook, people seem to be runninginto old friends. Excited shrieks ofglee can be heard, as people stopand get caught up on what is goingon in each other’s lives. With thismany people in attendance, nowonder it sometimestakes so long to getfrom your seat to therestroom!

Of course, many of usreturn to Championshipsto witness the nextgeneration of youngperformers, reveling inthe glory of a job welldone. Some of us cometo see what innovative,

entertaining and thought-provoking productions ouractivity’s designers will pullout of their creative hats.(And, much to the chagrinof our fellow audiencemembers, offer our“unbiased” opinions ontheir efforts!)

However, having walkedmany, many “laps” aroundthe U.D. Arena over the years, I've come to believe that a largemajority of attendees travel toChampionships mainly to reconnectwith cherished friends.

I was recently looking through myfile of WGI articles and came acrossthis quote, which ran in the 2003Championships program.

“In tentative and isolating times, it is grounding to embrace an artform that is fundamentally based oncollaboration… Performing is an actof craft, courage and continuity thatis ultimately reassuring both to thosewho practice it and to those who

appreciate it.” PlaywrightWendy Wasserstein, New York Times

The last three yearshave been tumultuousones for the humanrace. In 2003, it wasunclear what ournation’s role in theMiddle East would be,and sadly, the extra-ordinary playwright

Wendy Wasserstein recently passed away at the age of 55, after a courageous battle with cancer. And although Wasserstein probablynever heard of winter guard orindoor percussion, I think her quoteperfectly captures the spirit and soulof our activity, beautifully encapsu-lating what draws us all back toeach other, year after year.

Yes, the world has changedsignificantly since 1977, when sixfriends gathered around a table toform Winter Guard International. But whether this is your first trip to World Championships or yourtwentieth (like mine!), isn’t itcomforting to find that “our” worldhasn't really changed all that much?Indeed, the bonds of friendshipformed through winter guard andindoor percussion are unlike anyothers in the world.

This weekend, take a moment tolook around at the people in thisarena... How lucky are we to havefound this activity? And each other!

Color Guard Judges

The Judging

WGI Color Guard Judges undergo a rigorous training program including an extensive period of trial judging.Judges applying for WGI approval must complete a home study process, the Judges’ Academy, trialing on guardsin every class, and participate in a continuing education program that encompasses annual study requirementsand clinics. The judging community is a body of professionals who have come from the activity and are nowworking to perpetuate the unique experience WGI Sport of the Arts offers. Many are trained in dance and the-atre and bring that knowledge to the performers. Many are educators and professionals who share a commonunderstanding of the gigantic role the pageantry arts played in their own lives. These judges endeavor to offer a quality experience to the thousands of young people who grace our stage and give us their best.

You know BOA as the ultimate stage for the nation’s outstanding marching bands. Did you know that our Summer Symposium also offers an unforgettable, positively life-changing experience for Color Guard and Percussion performers?

Color GuardExperience first-rate clinicians, leadership classes and multiple color guard styles. You’ll have performance opportunities during the week and hands-on experience with members of top drum and bugle corps, including The Cavaliers in residence!

World Percussion SymposiumBOA’s World Percussion Symposium is unique – a one-stop comprehensive summer percussion experience. Students choose from tracks in Marching, Concert or Drum set. “The whole electronic thing will evolve. It’s about doing what

we want to do. It’s about having the kids at the forefront. . . .

By adding one more family of voices to a band, the possibilities

go up exponentially.”—Kevin Schuessler, Band Director
