About Willamette University

Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritagedating to its founding in 1842. Students and employees are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do.

We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our studentsas friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Notunto ourselves alone are we born.”

Why Willamette?• Quality Academics• Student-Athletes are more than /4 of the student body• Competition in the NCAA and the Northwest Conference• Student-Faculty Ratio of :• Students from 4 States• Opportunity to Study Abroad • Located across the street from the Oregon State Capitol• NearthePacificCoastandthe Cascade Mountains

This motto is put into action locally andthroughout the world. At Willamette, youcan study abroad, as many of our studentsdo each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while workingto improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the sameacademic expectations as the nation’s mostacclaimed colleges and universities, we hopewe’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom.Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should bothchallenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the Collegeof Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students tobenefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program withvaried extracurricular activities. The faculty

Conference and National Affiliations

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over425 members and is the largestNCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with anathletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho,Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, employees care aboutthe well-being of their student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

“Road Warriors” in 2006-07 The 2006-07 Willamette swimming season will go down as one of the most memorable years in Head Coach Al Stephenson’s history atWillamette. Due to a faulty valve, the bottom ofthe pool literally erupted from the enormous underground water pressure after being emptiedfor maintenance during the summer. Faced with the difficulty of no home facility for practices and competitions, the Willamette swimmers rose to the challenge, and by the endof the competitive season, many of the athleteswere swimming personal bests. Thus, the team adopted the “Road Warrior” mentality, adapting to different pools during practices, often adding an hour of tavel time to their hectic practice andacademic schedules. “We talked of this mentality throughout theyear,” Stephenson said. “This is something no other team or organized activity has ever done, and hopefully never will. That traveling would force them to manage their time more efficiently, become more proactive in their classes and exam schedules, and most importantly, become more cohesive and supportive as a team.” Stephenson’s thoughts proved true as the team finished the season strong at the NWC Championships, swimming individual best timesat an 85% rate. Although the WU men’s team placed sixth and the women’s team was seventh, the scores were not indicative of the success ofthe swimmers or the difficulties they faced.

A New Beginning in 2007-08 As the Willamette teams enter the 2007-08season, many of last year’s stalwarts are gone. “We graduated a very full class of seven swimmers — three women and four men,” saidStephenson. “Additionally, three of the seniors were our top point-getters throughout the year and during the NWC Championships, leavingus some very big shoes (or flippers) to fill.” Gone is women’s captain Becca Fischer, who set Willamette records in the breaststroke events and was a top sprinter and individual medleycompetitor. She proved her worth and versatility

by swimming well in so many different events. Also graduating in 2007 was Shanley Roxburgh,a team captain who provided solid depth in the distance I.M. and the freestyle events. A third member of the women’s team who graduatedwas Molly Heinisch. For the men, graduating seniors in 2006-07were captain Cason Schmidt, plus Kei Otawa, Graham Smith and David Sluss. Otawa finished his career with the Bearcats as a winner of theBooth Award, presented annually to Willamette’s outstanding senior male athlete of the year. Otawa and Schmidt earned several top-three finishes at the NWC Championships. They alsoswam their way onto Willamette’s Top 10 lists in the breaststroke, the backstroke and the sprintfreestyle events. “This year (2007-08), we have a smaller teamin numbers, but they are willing to sacrifice andwork hard towards the NWC Championships,” said Stephenson. “We will have to fall back on some key personnel to make huge impacts atour competitions.”

Seniors Lead the Way Seven seniors will be the core of this year’steam. Seniors for the women are captain Brittany Thiemens, Shannon Gima, Bridget Sutherland, Chelsea Hollingsworth and Lindsay Mumm. For the men, seniors are captain Greg Henselmanand Pete Kahn. Gima’s specialty is the backstroke, where sheplaced fifth in the 100 and was eighth in the 200at the NWC Meet. Sutherland and Hollingsworth

are back from studying abroad and will provide strength in the butterfly and the sprint events. Thiemens will swim the sprint freestyle eventsand will anchor as many as four relays. The men will feature Kahn in the backstroke and middle distance freestyle events. He placed in the top 16 at the Conference Championships in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke races. Henselman will be the mainstay in the distancefreestyle and the butterfly, while providing greatleadership for the squad.

Younger ‘Cats Will Contribute The future has some bright stars who are freshmen, sophomores and juniors on the the2007-08 team. For the women, sophomores Whitney Pryce, Jenna Larrow, Lauren Gard and Coal Sorenson are diverse, as each swims a different stroke as her specialty. Pryce and Larrow will mostly be used for freestyle races, while Gard will compete in the breaststroke and Sorenson will participatein the backstroke and freestyle events. Newcomers to the women’s squad include sophomore transfer Gwen Schulze, as well assophomore student Bekah Hykan. Hykan did not swim as a freshman last season. First-year

Willamette swimmers are Viktoriya Beliy, alongwith Chelsea Ibarra and Hanna Connett. The experience and versatility of Schulze, who swims the butterfly and I.M. events, willbe a great addition to the team. Connett hasthe background to become one of Willamette’s best swimmers and will mostly be utilized in thebreaststroke, I.M. and middle distance freestyle. The succes of the 2007-08 men’s team willfall heavily onto the shoulders of junior JamesHuang, sophomores Matt Tanigawa and KevinTangeman, and freshman John Schmidtbauer. Tanigawa showed his value at last year’s NWC Meet by placing in two individual medley racesas well as the 200-yard butterfly. Tangeman has the potential to be a force inthe sprint freestyle and the butterfly. Huang willshow his talents in the breaststroke and the I.M. events. He also will be a member of the medley relay teams. Schmidtbauer is dedicated worker, who will complement the other members of thethe men’s team with his butterfly and freestyle efforts. All of the men will be contribute in therelay events. They also will provide the teamwith great enthusiasm. This season’s overall success at dual meetswill be limited by the number of swimmers oneach team. “Our dual meet record has never been of really great importance,” Stephenson said. “We use the duals for showing improvement, finding additional events for our swimmers, finalizing race strategies, determining training speeds, and developing overall competitiveness. We pointto the Conference Championships as the true measure of any success, both from an individualand a team perspective.” For now and into the immediate future, “it’s good to be home” has a new meaning for thisyear’s team.
