Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over425 members and is the largestNCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with anathletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho,Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff careabout the well-being of student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference The nine private collegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leaguesin the nation. The NWC isnationally competitive in abroad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washingtonare Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitmanand Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and thenreturned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewfrom the conference in 1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. TheNWC offers championships

in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to formthe Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfoster equity, sportsmanship and a genuineconcern for all student-athletes.

Doug Bloom was named First Team All-NWCas a freshman at shortstop last season.

The Willamette University baseball players and coaches are excited about the 2009 season. The Bearcats feature a combination of returning veterans and young players. Five starters returnto anchor the infield, while several newcomerswill play key roles in the success of the team. The mixture of veterans and newcomersincludes many talented players. They can createoffense throughout the lineup. Head Coach Aaron Swick is starting his first season leading the Bearcats, but it’s not his firstyear with the team. He was an assistant coachat WU in 2006 and 2007, before serving as thepitching coach and recruiting coordinator atSouth Dakota State University in 2008. WU returns seven of its top 10 hitters afterbatting .308 as a team last year. The Bearcats ledNCAA Division III in home runs per game, blasting 66 homers in 40 games (1.65 avg.). WUranked 25th in slugging percentage (.518), whileachieving 66 doubles and 114 extra-base hits. Kyle Stalker (Sr., 1B) is back as a team leader. In 2008, he ranked first in Division III in home runs per game (22 homers, 39 games, 0.56 avg.). He was second in the nation in RBIs per game(1.62) and seventh in slugging percentage (.844). Stalker was named Northwest Conference Player of the Year and was chosen Third Team All-America by the ABCA. He established WU season records for home runs and RBIs (63). Healso set the record for career home runs (36). Sophomores will offer significant support on offense, with shortstop Doug Bloom, left fielderT.C. Lee and catcher/DH Max Stepan all hittingover .320 as freshmen last spring. Bloom was selected First Team All-NWC after hitting .333, earning seven doubles, scoring39 runs and stealing 16 bases on 20 attempts. Lee received Second Team All-NWC honors last spring. He hit .320 and smacked 10 homers, while pouinding out six doubles and tying forsecond on the team with 34 RBIs. Stepan batted .343 for the ‘Cats and hit seven home runs in 70 at bats. He achieved a.671 slugging percentage on offense and earneda .990 fielding percentage behind the plate.

Willamette hoped to compete for the NWCtitle this season. The ’Cats will play each of the NWC teams four times. WU also will travel toCalifornia to play CSU-East Bay and Menlo. WU was 20-20 last year, including 16-15 in the NWC. The Bearcats split four games withperennial power George Fox University.

Pitching Graduating seniors threw 65% of the totalinnings for the Bearcats last year. As a result, the pitching staff is young. Even so, the pitchershave the skills to be successful. Kelsey Nakata (Sr., RHP) is the only returning starter and is projected to anchor the rotation. Nakata’s careerERA of 4.22 ranks ninth on WU’s all-time list. Other projected starters are Devin Grindy (So, RHP), Ryan Hood-Taylor (So, RHP) and Chris Torgerson (So, RHP). Each saw severalinnings on the mound last season. Other key contributors to the pitching staff will be Scott Martin (Jr., RHP) and Jack McGee (Sr. RHP). Martin, a middle reliever, threw 17 innings and had a 5.71 ERA in 2008. McGee remains the Bearcats’ closer, after recording four saves last season. McGee also will see time atfirst base after hitting .288 as a junior.

In 2008, Maslanik hit .279 and was solid ondefense, as he earned a .992 fielding percentage. Stepan’s .343 batting average ranked third on theteam. Maslanik and Stepan combined to throw out 10 base stealers. Dylan Summers (Fr.) and Ross Knutsen (So.) will provide depth for theBearcats at catcher this year.
