2007 SEASON PREVIEWA new era in the Olivet College baseball program begins in

2007 as Ted Mahan takes over as head coach. Mahan’s mostrecent head coaching experience was a 10-year stint at MichiganState University. Along with his Big Ten experience, he also hasbeen a baseball instructor for more than 25 years.

The 2007 Olivet team features a strong nucleus of 11seniors, including seven who have been a part of the programfor the last three years.

Leading the seniors are Nick McIntosh (Petoskey) andChris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator). They haveled the Comets at the plate each of the last two years. A yearago, McIntosh had a .382 batting average to go along with 22runs scored, 47 hits, 10 doubles and 25 RBI. Behind the plate,he committed only one error in 152 chances for a .993 fieldingpercentage. McIntosh is one of the Comets’ co-captains for the2007 season.

Despite being hampered by a wristinjury last year, Shelhart was second onthe team with a .321 batting average.During his sophomore season, he hit .420with 13 doubles, one triple and 14 homeruns for a school record .855 sluggingpercentage. Entering his senior season inthe outfield, Shelhart is close to breakingseveral career records, including doubles, home runs, RBI and total bases. His .630slugging percentage ranks first all-time.

“There is no question that Nick andChris are the two best hitters on this team,”said Mahan. “When you have two guyswho can hit like them, it makes everyonearound them better.”

Sean Howard (Potterville), Derek Ott(Kawkawlin/Bay City Western) and NateRann (Laingsburg) are also being countedon to provide senior leadership. Howardmakes the move to the outfield. Last year,he saw playing time at first base and as adesignated hitter. Ott is likely to getplaying time as the starter in rightfield aswell as a relief pitcher. He was used in thesame role last year, starting six games inrightfield and making three appearanceson the mound. Rann will play in the infield.

“Sean, Derek and Nate have worked very hard to get better,”Mahan said. “They are a great compliment to Nick and Chris.”

B.J. Behnke (Charlotte) is expected to get someopportunities to play at first base. Bryan Houston (Detroit/Southfield) and Isaiah Wiltshire (Mississauga, Ontario/LornePark) bring a lot of speed to the game and are going to beutilized as pinch runners.

“B.J., Bryan and Isaiah are going to find a way tocontribute,” says Mahan. “Whether it is pinch hitting, pinchrunning or as a defensive replacement.”

The rest of the senior class, co-captain Brad Dragicevich(Kalamazoo/Central), Brian Schaeffer (Mason) and ElliotWilcox (Mattawan), are part of the pitching rotation.

www.olivetcollege.edu/sports 1

Dragicevich is the No. 1 pitcher. Last year, he posted a team-high four wins and 56 and one-third innings. In two seasons atOlivet, Schaeffer has a 6-5 record, including a 4-1 mark duringhis sophomore campaign. Wilcox enters the season as the No.2 pitcher. When he is not on the mound, he may be used as adesignated hitter.

“We have a lot of experience on the pitching mound,” Mahansaid. “We are counting on Brad, Brian and Elliot to be the leadersand keep us in the game. I like the way Brad goes out andcompetes. He throws strikes and has a great breaking ball.”

The junior class features four returning players and fourjunior college transfers. Of the eight, five are expected to makean impact on this year’s varsity team.

Todd Driver (Charlotte) and Michael Katlin (Howell) arecompeting for the starting job at shortstop. In seven games lastyear, Driver had a .313 batting average, while Katlin saw action

in 26 games and hit .254.Transfers Justin Creager

(Grandville/Muskegon CC), Matt Emery(Glenco, Ontario/Mott CC) and DavidPembroke (Bay City/St. Clair County CC)have added depth to the pitching staff.Creager is a reliever, while Emery andPembroke are starters.

The rest of the junior class includespitcher Ed O’Brien (Stockbridge) alongwith infielders Eric Quinn (Fort Gratiot/PortHuron Northern) and Brandon Wilkins(Detroit/Orchard Lake St. Mary’s). Each areexpected to see most of their playing timein back-up roles.

“Our junior class has a lot ofexperience,” says Mahan. “All of them aregoing to get opportunities to show me whatthey can do.”

Highlighting the sophomore class areCody Goodell (Davison), Scott Purdy(Traverse City/West) and Rob Swanson(Marshall). Goodell made 12 starts last year, including nine as the designated hitter. Thisyear, Goodell is serving as a back-upcatcher and outfielder. Purdy and Swansonare penciled in as starters at first and

second base, respectively. Last year, Purdy was the starter onthe varsity team, while Swanson started on the junior varsityteam. Sophomore Steven Oginsky (New Lothrop), a transferfrom Saginaw Valley State University, is expected to see time onthe mound as a reliever and closer.

“Cody, Scott and Rob are going to play an awful lot,” Mahansaid. “They are the future of our program, but they complimentour older guys very well.”

The other two members of the sophomore class, DanSimmons (Climax/Climax-Scotts) and Kyle Walkowiak(Traverse City/West), are going to continue to refine their skillsat the junior varsity level this spring.

The freshmen are being used to add depth to the juniorvarsity team, which will play a 16-game schedule.

Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic AssociationThe Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)

is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference. The 2006-07 school year marks the 119th consecutive year

of operation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From thevery beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-seasonchampionships in multiple sports. There have beenchanges in some of the sports (bicycle racing andIndian club juggling have long since disappeared, andbasketball did not even exist in 1888), but thesechanges have served to develop the MIAA into oneof America’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, today offering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian,Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Saint Mary’s.Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has ever belongedto any other formal league. Albion and Olivet were chartermembers although Albion is the only member to hold continuousmembership. Ex-members are Michigan State University

(1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), HillsdaleCollege (1888-1960), and Defiance College (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1954until 1997 when Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College

of Indiana were invited to join. It also marked the firsttime that the league added members outside the Stateof Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that thename of the conference would not change. Theinaugural year of current members are: Adrian (1908),Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926),Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet (1888), and SaintMary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the leagueaccepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as anassociate member for the purpose of competing in football.Wisconsin Lutheran announced in 2005 that it will leave theMIAA after the 2007 season to join another conference.

Tri-State University became a conference member in 2004-05upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.
