DAN MURPHY’S NATIONAL WINE SHOW OF AUSTRALIA™
The Dan Murphy’s National Wine Show of Australia™ is Australia’s premier national show forwine and brandy. The Show accepts entries from across Australia in premium, commercial andaged classes for table, sparkling and fortied wines, and brandy.
The purpose of the Show is to judge and promote the best of the best Australian wines. Winesmust qualify through Australian regional and capital city wine shows to enter the premium, premium gold and single vineyard classes. Entries in the premium and single vineyard classesmust be gold, silver or bronze award winning wines. Entries in the premium gold classes must begold award winning wines. These restrictions ensure that in these classes, entries include onlythe best of the best Australian wines. In keeping with this purpose, wines from New Zealand areno longer eligible to enter the Show.
Entries in the aged and commercial classes do not require a qualifying medal. Wines must beat least 5 years old to qualify for the aged classes. The commercial classes require a minimum
volume of 2,000 dozen bottles (small volume) or 60,000 litres (large volume).
The Show requires exhibitors to have a minimum quantity of the wines they enter to ensurethat the wines are commercially made and as much as possible, that the wines entered areavailable in commercial quantities. This year, the Show has introduced new volume requirements toencourage small and medium-size wine producers to enter.
Australia has a long history of producing wines blended from different varieties and some of ourbest wines are blends. New premium classes for blended table wines (classes 11, 25 and 26)have been introduced to encourage these styles of wines.
A section for single vineyard wines (classes 31 - 38) highlights the growing importance in Australia of region and terroir in premium wines. To be eligible, a wine must be made from fruitsourced entirely from a single vineyard named on the commercial label.
Many wines show their best when they reach maturity after cellaring. The classes for aged wines(classes 39 - 42, 58, 59 and 67 - 72) encourage exhibitors to make and show mature wines (5years and older).
JUDGES
Wine show judges are often trained winemakers or work in the wine industry and spend manyyears training to judge wines. The Show’s judges are carefully selected from the best judges onthe Australian wine show circuit. Their expertise is complemented by international judges, provid-ing a broader, international perspective to the Show.
The current Chair of Judges, Tom Carson, brings a wealth of experience to the Show as adistinguished winemaker and judge.
JUDGING EXHIBITSWines are assessed by four panels of three judges. Classes of wines are allocated to each panel
to judge over three days. The panel assesses each wine independently of other wines in theclass. Each judge has access only to a glass of each wine, poured by a steward. The number ofwines judged each day is restricted to allow adequate time to assess each wine.

Each wine is scored out of 20 points according to the following criteria:
Colour and condition 3 pointsBouquet 7 pointsPalate 10 points
The chair of the judging panel tallies the points for each wine after all the wines in a class havebeen judged. The judges may discuss the merits of particular wines before a nal assessment ofeach wine is made. A medal will be awarded to a wine according to the aggregate score of the
judging panel (out of 60) as follows:
Gold medal 55.5 points or higher Silver medal 51 - 55 pointsBronze medal 46.5 - 50.5 points
Each wine is judged on its merits with no limit on the number of gold, silver or bronze medals that
may be awarded in a class. If more than one gold medal is awarded in a class, the judging panelawards a top gold for the class. The judging panel may decide to make no awards in a class.
AUDIT PROCEDURETo ensure the integrity and quality of exhibits, the Wine Show Committee selects one or moreregions from which entries have been received to be audited. An auditor appointed by theRNCAS may inspect the records of each wine entered from the selected regions. The auditor thendetermines that at the time of entry the wine complied with the conditions of entry for the classentered, including qualifying awards, volume and that the wine was commercially bottled. Theauditor may take at least one sample bottle for comparison with the exhibit at the time of judging.
When an audited wine is judged, each judge is given a glass of the wine from the sample bottletaken from the exhibitor’s stock to conrm that the wine entered is the same as the sample wine.If the judges agree that the wines are not the same, the wine is disqualied.
TROPHIESOpen trophies are awarded to the best wines in Premium and Commercial classes after a
judge-off of the top gold awards from eligible classes. The top wine in a class must be of goldmedal standard to be eligible for a trophy. Contested trophies are decided by a ballot of all judges, including the chair of judges. The open trophies include the Best Dry Red and Best Dry White
Wines of the Show, and the Len Evans Memorial Trophy for the Best Table Wine of the Show.
Wines in Class 12 (Medium or Sweet White) and Class 13 (Rosé) are not eligible for OpenTrophies, but the top gold award in each of these classes automatically receives the trophy forthat style.
Wines in Single Vineyard, Aged, Sparkling and Fortied classes do not compete against thePremium and Commercial classes for trophies, but compete for the trophy in their respectivesections (eg The Single Vineyard Trophy and Best Table Wine, Aged Classes).
Special trophies are awarded to the top wine in each Premium Gold class; The Semillon Trophy,The Chardonnay Trophy, The Shiraz Trophy and The Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy.

Judges: Ben Edwards, Samantha Connew, Tim Wildman MWComment: Young, fresh and vibrant wines seduced the judges where the oak handling was notexcessive. This was not always the case. Heavy handed winemakers clouded the expression ofmany wines that had delicate oral fruit to offer. Less oak please.

Judges: David Bicknell, Tim Kirk, Andrew SpinazeComment: Overall a good solid class of wines. The top wines exhibited balance, texture andavour, without sacricing concentration. But it also highlighted how difcult Cabernet can be
to ‘get right’, due to heavy handed oak/tannin/acidication, unbalancing the nish of the wines.
