Proven 10,000 times over

A simple equation: a company with long-standing experience and innovative ideas, multiplied by high-quality materials, equals a one-of-a-kind intralogistics system with the OSR Shuttle™ at its heart. KNAPP, the inventor of shuttle technology, looks back at 10 years of development with real pride.

The OSR Shuttle™, the result of many years of ongoing development, now represents the most modern, state-of-the-art shuttle technology. With the help of WLAN technology, the shuttles move through rack systems towering as high as a 10-storey apartment building. More than 10,000 shuttles are in operation worldwide in the rack lines of over 150 installations and have travelled a formidable 200 million kilometres in total: This corresponds to 500 times the distance from the earth to the moon.

Modern pioneers with vision

As leader in technology KNAPP concentrates on the future and its innovations, rigorously pursuing the further development of the OSR Shuttle™.

The demands made on modern warehouse logistics are subject to ongoing change and KNAPP gladly accepts the challenge of fi nding solutions for such demands. With KNAPP, you have a reliable partner for the long-term who will help you look to the future and stay a step ahead.

Higher, faster, better

The OSR Shuttle™ by KNAPP puts the leading shuttle technology in your warehouse. The OSR Shuttle™ beats comparable technologies by far in all areas. For example, an OSR Shuttle™ rack line requires less than 3 kWh energy and 1.5 hours to complete 1,000 storage and retrieval movements. A comparable stacker crane aisle requires 60 kWh energy and 8 hours for the same storage and retrieval movements.

The rack lines of the OSR Shuttle™ can be very closely arranged thereby achieving optimal space utilization. The racks are reminiscent of skyscrapers – the rack line system can currently be built up to 24 metres high and more than 100 metres in length.

The largest shuttle system in the world was of course made by the inventor of shuttle technology: by KNAPP.

Scaling new heights together

One key to success at KNAPP is the tight collaboration and exchange of experience with the customers. This close cooperation resulted in the optimization of numerous logistics systems around the world with the OSR Shuttle™. The success of the OSR Shuttle™ is confi rmed by the satisfaction of our customers.

OSR Shuttle™ | Experience

‟After an intense offer phase, we made the decision for the returns system offered by the KNAPP company. In record time a warehouse was realized that optimally combined performance and ergonomics and that, on the scale realized, offers a maximum availability and serviceability.”

KNAPP proves that a sense of tradition and innovative thinking are compatible. Since its founding in 1952, KNAPP has developed into an important driving force in the Styrian economy as well as an internationally recognized global player in warehouse logistics. Today KNAPP employs 2,000 people worldwide.

The development and production of the OSR Shuttle™ has also been marked by 10 years of continuous development with the goal of being able to offer a high quality, innovative product. The OSR Shuttle™ and the associated software were developed in Hart bei Graz – further development is ongoing. Most of the production for the OSR Shuttle™ is also carried out at the Hart bei Graz location. With the goal of keeping transport times and emissions low, KNAPP places great value on working with regional suppliers for the necessary materials. For KNAPP customers, the advantage gained is having a unifi ed, one-stop system. The degree of completion for delivery of the OSR Shuttle™ is very high; this means that a system can be put in operation in a short time. Installation and startup are carried out by qualifi ed specialists on-site.

Like industrious little ants, the shuttles move untiringly through the rack line, storing and retrieving containers, transferring containers to the lifts and accepting containers to be stored in the racks. The perfect interplay between lift system and shuttle makes a steady level of performance possible, avoiding energy consumption peaks and providing an even supply of containers to the Pick-it-Easy work stations.

The shuttle itself weighs very little, therefore optimizing power requirements: The shuttles can transport a load that weighs almost as much as the shuttle itself. The brake energy of the lifts and shuttles is also fed back into the system. The control software KiSoft SRC continually optimizes transport routes and transport movements, making an important contribution to energy conservation.

In sum, the OSR Shuttle™ achieves the lowest energy consumption of comparable systems on the market and is more powerful, all due to the use of the most modern energy-saving technologies.

In one hour, one rack line of the OSR Shuttle™ performed 800 storage and retrieval movements and consumed about 2 kWh: This corresponds to the energy consumption of 2 vacuum cleaners.

Calculated for one year the OSR Shuttle™ results in a value of 6,400 kWh or a CO2 emission of 2.6 metric tons. In comparison, an average European causes 9.9 metric tons of CO2 per year. CO2 emission calculated as forest area:

Experiencing the future of intralogistics begins today with the OSR Shuttle™. Through the scalable, space-saving rack system, the costs of the purchase can be made-to-order – the OSR Shuttle™ is a system that can be easily expanded in the future. The modernization of existing OSR Shuttle™ systems can also be carried out without problem.

The shuttle system is designed on the principle of parts commonality, which simplifi es spare parts storage and maintenance. The preventive maintenance strategy guarantees high availability with maximum service life for the shuttle system. The control software KiSoft SRC monitors the system and can point out potential for optimization in advance.

KiSoft SRC and the OSR Shuttle™ make an unbeatable team: Software and system are perfectly coordinated with each other. KiSoft SRC controls all storage and retrieval movements of the OSR Shuttle™ and optimizes the conveying distance to prevent unnecessary transport movements. The Pick-it-Easy

workstations are controlled centrally from the KiSoft SRC, making 100 % lot tracking possible.

The Pick-it-Easy work stations are designed according to ergonomic and occupational health principles and are individually adapted to the work process. The goods-to-person principle makes perfect order fulfi lment possible and minimizes the time needed for walking.

At the centre of the Pick-it-Easy product is the person: The intelligent KiDesign and the multifunctional work stations achieve the best possible performance for the least amount of strain. The Pick-it-Easy work station is made from high-quality, environmentally-friendly, recyclable materials.

The user-friendly surfaces create a comfortable work environment, helping the person to work effi ciently. Through the intuitive user guidance and the error-free strategy of the system, the time needed to train new personnel is greatly reduced.

*650 storage/retrieval movements per hour can be achieved by one OSR Shuttle™ aisle, whereas the same performance requires 5 aisles with a stacker crane.**Stacker crane system

Result:The OSR Shuttle™ requires about 5 % of the energy of a stacker crane system. For neutralizing the CO2 emissions of the OSR Shuttle™ a forest area of about 260 m² is needed, for the stacker crane system about 4,800 m².

The power requirements for both systems at average operating performance per year were determined. The CO2 emission is calculated from the power requirements and this fi gure is used to calculate the number of trees that would be needed to neutralize this amount of CO2.

The modular construction of the OSR Shuttle™ allows the highest possible playroom for the individual set-up and adjustment of your warehouse processes. The system is adjusted to the given conditions and can be simply extended or complemented by another OSR Shuttle™ system. With the scalable construction of the OSR Shuttle™, investment in the system is made manageable.

The central element of the OSR Shuttle™ is always the rack system and shuttles. Depending on the application, shuttles can be used that are capable of transporting containers and cartons weighing up to 50 kg. The rack lines are tightly constructed, resulting in optimal use of space. The heights of the levels are variable, and storing containers up to 4 deep provides particularly high storage location density.

At the front of each rack line is a high-performance lift, which is adjusted to the level of the storage and retrieval performance. The OSR Shuttle™ with goods-to-person picking is the perfect solution for B and C articles, however, with a high-performance lift system and integrated Fastbox (a buffer tower for temporary storage of containers) near the Pick-it-Easy work station, shuttle technology can be employed for A articles as well.

The Pick-it-Easy work stations that can be connected to the shuttle system work independently of one another and can be activated and deactivated according to need, to cushion peak demand. The ergonomic Pick-it-Easy workstation optimizes the work process and is adjusted to each application according to a detailed analysis.

The OSR Shuttle™ is created according to the principle of parts commonality: all the various

members of the OSR Shuttle™ family are created from the same components. If you have several OSR Shuttle™ systems, your personnel can service and maintain all the systems without great effort.

OSR Shuttle™ | Modular system

‟With the freedom for design inherent in the OSR Shuttle™ we can offer a system tailor-made to fi t the customer's requirements that can, in the future, be adjusted simply and effectively to changes in the sector.”

The Fastbox is a revolutionary buffer tower with lift that is connected to the Pick-it-Easy workstation and can be used for various applications:

• Buffer for fast-moving products: for processing A articles with the OSR Shuttle™

• Buffer for transport containers• Buffer for sequencing and sorting containers, for

example, for a packing pattern calculation at the work station

The Fastbox is also constructed according to the principle of parts commonality: For vertical transport in the Fastbox, the high-performance OSR Shuttle™ lift is used. The Fastbox can be built up to 12 metres high; the number of levels and their heights is variable. Containers, cartons and trays can all be stored in the Fastbox.

The Fastbox, like the OSR Shuttle™, fulfi ls the highest standards for safety; access is carried out using the interlock concept through servicing platforms. No compressed air is necessary to operate the Fastbox; as standard, the brake energy is fed back into the system.
