The bounty of the Skagit Valley is apart of what makes this area so special.From the first plant sales of the spring tostrawberry season in June through toapple harvest and October pumpkinpatches, there is something for everyone.Be sure to search out our local producestands or the convenient farmers’ marketseach weekend during the season.

The alluvial delta that the Skagit Riverhas formed is the source of our fertilesoils. These are perfect for tulip bulbs,potatoes and other root crops – or forpasture and winter grains – home to thetundra swans and snow geese that visiteach winter. Our mild maritime climatealso makes this a major seed growing re-

gion. The spinach, beet, cabbage, andBrussel sprouts seed produced in the Sk-agit help feed the world. In all, over 100commercial crops are raised here.

The Skagit Valley is home to dairiesproducing milk and awarding-winninghomestead cheeses, local, and pasture-raised meat producers. Bakeries supplywonderful artisan breads and bakedgoods, using locally grown ingredients.Many restaurants also support local agri-culture, buying directly from farmersnearby – some who farm organically. Our river and coastline produce fivespecies of salmon, Dungeness crab andSpotted shrimp in season, and aquacul-ture production of oysters and mussels.

Skagit County FlowersThousands of acres of tulips, daf-

fodils and iris’ come to life each spring,bringing vibrant color and visitors toSkagit County. Tulips get most of thepress, but a little known fact is that forevery acre of tulips, there are two acresof daffodils grown in Skagit County.Bulb growing and flower harvesting isbig business and makes up a significantpart of the economy.

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festivaltakes place each April to celebrate theflowers’ arrival. Once Mother Naturegives the go-ahead for the flowers tobloom, they will do so for approxi-mately two weeks. For more informa-tion about the Skagit Valley TulipFestival, visit www.tulipfestival.org.

Cascade Pass and Sahale ArmOne of the most climactic alpinehiking experiences anywhere. Onceyou reach the top at 5,400 feet, thevistas of peaks, meadows, streamsand glaciers will forever be etchedin your mind. The round trip toCascade Pass is 8 miles and an addi-tional 2-6 miles for Sahale Arm.Drive Hwy 20 east from Burlington tomilepost 106 at the far end of Marble-mount. Continue straight ahead, crossingthe Skagit River and drive 22 miles to theend of the Cascade River Road to the Cas-cade Pass trailhead.

Hidden Lake LookoutFrom the viewpoint you can see thecrystal blue waters of Hidden Lakeand one of the most incrediblepeaks in the North Cascades, Eldo-rado. Your climb begins with atour through an old growth forestand transitions into meadows, rockgardens and a rocky perch. Roundtrip to the lookout is 8 miles.

Drive Hwy 20 east to Marblemountand cross the bridge heading east on theCascade River Road. After 10 milesturn left on Sibley Creek Road anddrive 5 miles on a one lane road to thetrailhead, elevation 3,400.

Thunder CreekThis is a year round hiking experi-ence through deep old growth forestleading into the heart of the NorthCascades National Park. The Thun-der Creek Trail is a wonderful,earthy hiking experience for thosewho prefer the deep woods to mead-ows, powerful currents to splashywaterfalls or those seeking a won-

derful off-season hike. This hike hasno fixed stopping point, so distanceis up to you.

Drive Highway 20 east from Burlingtonuntil reaching Diablo Lake and Colo-nial Creek Campground near milepost130. The trail starts at the far end ofthe campground, elevation 1,200 feet.

Sourdough RidgeThis is step for step, one of the mostrigorous trails in Washington Statewith 5,000 feet of elevation gain in 6miles. The glorious sights are wellworth the price paid and includeviews of the Ross & Diablo Lakesand numerous North Cascadespeaks. Round trip to the old firelookout, maintained by the NationalPark Service, is 12 miles.

Drive Highway 20 east from Burlingtonuntil reaching the community of Diablonear milepost 126. Turn left into theSeattle City Light owned community.The trailhead starts behind the bubbleenclosed swimming pool near the foot ofDiablo Dam.

Easy PassThis hike includes spectacular viewsof the Fisher Creek Valley and 9,000foot Mount Logan. The trail eventu-ally leads to a valley with mile highpeaks on both sides, too numerousto mention. Round trip is 8 miles,though you can make it a longer hikeif you wish to venture down fatherinto Fisher Creek.

Hwy 20 past Newhalem and all threedams. Beyond milepost 151 turn rightinto the parking area for the Easy Passtrailhead, elevation 3,600 feet.

Maple PassSpectacular views into the heart ofthe Glacier Peak and PasaytenWilderness Areas are among thestunning rewards from this beautiful8 mile loop. Fall is an especiallygood time to visit as the Larch treeswill be blazing gold.

Hwy 20 east beyond milepost 157 toRainy Pass. Turn right into the parkingarea and trailhead, elevation 4,900 feet.

Sauk MountainThis is the shortest hike on thelist, but includes great vistas ofsurrounding peaks and a tremen-dous view of the winding SkagitRiver. Round trip to the site of aformer lookout cabin is 4 miles.

Hwy 20 east from Concrete about 8 miles,and turn left on the Sauk Mountain Road(just before Rockport State Park), thendrive 8 miles to the trailhead, elevation4,000 feet.

Baker River TrailThis is a year round hiking oppor-tunity through old growth forestand along a splendid wildernessriver ending at Sulphide Creek orthere is a hiking bridge that willtake you across the river and allowyou access to Baker Lake. Roundtrip is 6 miles, longer if you decideto cross the river and explore.Drive Highway 20 east from Burlington,turning left on the Baker Lake Highwaybeyond milepost 82. Drive approximately26 beautiful, winding miles to the end ofthe road and trailhead, elevation 800 feet.

Park ButteThis hike offers a commanding viewof Mount Baker and the Easton andDeming Glaciers. The meadows andvistas here are simply amazing andhave been captured by photogra-phers for decades. Round trip is 8miles, but wandering all day in themeadows is encouraged.

Drive Highway 20 east from Burlington,turning left on the Baker Lake Highwaybeyond milepost 82. Turn left in 12.5miles at a prominent intersection and,following signs for Schreibers Meadow,turn right in 3 miles before driving thefinal 6 miles to the trailhead, elevation3,200 feet.

Anderson Butte/Watson Lakes

Hike includes two alpine lakesand unobstructed views of MountBaker and Mount Shuksan. Amile long climb to a rocky knobknown as Anderson Butte shouldbe your first trek, then on to thealpine lakes for fishing, relaxing

or picking blueberries. Roundtrip is 7 miles.

Drive Highway 20 east from Burlington,turning left on the Baker Lake Highwaybeyond milepost 82. Drive about 14miles before turning right and, afterliterally driving over the upper Bakerdam, turn left and wind 8 more milesto the trailhead, elevation 4,000 feet.

Pacific Northwest Trail to SamishOverlook – Chuckanut hike offers un-surpassed views of Samish Bay andmany of the San Juan Islands. Roundtrip is 6.5 miles and includes bat caves,a giant rock wall amphitheatre and fa-mous Oyster Dome. (Chuckanut Dr.)

Little Mountain – Mount Vernon’slargest park with views across SkagitValley to the Olympic Mountains. Twoviewpoints, one looking west and theother north. There are number of hik-ing trails, but you also can drive to thesummit. (Mount Vernon)

Mount Erie – There are numeroushikes in the Anacortes CommunityForest Lands and it is advised you

bring a map to stay on the right path.This area is a theme park for outdoorenthusiasts, with tremendous views ofthe San Juan Islands, Skagit Valley andnumerous mountains on a clear day.Drive or hike your way to the summitto enjoy the sights. (Anacortes)

Lake ActivitiesThere are over a dozen major

lakes in Skagit County. Each one isspecial in its own way, offering ex-cellent fishing, swimming or boat-ing. Depending on the season, youwill experience superb fishing atBaker Lake, Lake Campbell, LakeCavanaugh, Clear Lake, Lake Erie,Heart Lake, Lake McMurray, PassLake and Lake Shannon. Most

For swimming, the best place togo is Clear Lake, between MountVernon and Sedro-Woolley. Thebeach includes covered picnicshelters, a dock boasting a kid-friendly slide and a protectedswim area. Big Lake and Lake Ca-vanaugh are east of Mount Vernon,both with public boat launches onthe south side of the lakes. and artist Bill Mitchell who, thoughwheelchair bound, has painted

HISTORY FACTFor more than 10,000 years people

have lived in the Fidalgo andGuemes Island areas. After thesigning of the 1855 Point ElliottTreaty, several reservations wereset aside including one for theSwinomish Indian Tribal Commu-nity on southeastern Fidalgo Island.In the 1700s the Spanish, British,and Russian explorers and furtraders were the first settlers to enterthe Skagit region. Known as a shipharbor, Anacortes was establishedwith a name and post office in1879 after speculation that the sitewould be selected as the westernterminus for the Northern PacificRailroad; in 1890 Seattle waschosen instead. Anacortes wasofficially incorporated in 1891shortly after the railroad bust whenthe fishing and logging industriesbegan to dominate the town.

Guemes IslandA five minute ferry ride from

Anacortes will transport you to apiece of Skagit County unlike anyother. Guemes Island, knows themeaning of “island time”. The 15miles of paved roads on the islandare traveled lightly by the annualpopulation of 800. Upon arrival,you will be met by the Anderson’sGeneral Store and Café. The onlyother commercial establishment isthe Guemes Island Resort, on thenorth end of the island. Whetheryou are driving, walking, runningor taking a leisurely bike ride aroundthis island, you will be greetedwith friendly waves by the locals.Before you know it, you will bethe one initiating the greeting.The island is 8 square miles in size,with rolling hills, incredible views inevery direction and two prominentparks. Schoolhouse Park is locateddirectly in the middle of the islandand includes covered picnic tables,playground equipment and a soccerfield. Young’s Park is located on thenortheast tip of the island, with1,000’s of feet of shoreline to explore.

The Washington State Ferry Sys-tem is the third largest in the worldand the largest in the United States.Over 1.7 million riders traveledthrough the Anacortes Terminal in2009, venturing to Sidney B.C., SanJuan Island, Shaw Island, Orcas Islandand Lopez Island. It is recommendedfor vehicle traffic to arrive 45 minutesprior to the scheduled time withlonger waits for peak summer traffic.Walk on passengers should arrive atleast 15 minutes prior to departure.Ferry trips to British Columbia,Canada are treated just like drivingacross the border. Be sure you have apassport or the required documenta-tion before scheduling a trip. Faresare calculated based on a round tripbetween Anacortes and your desired

destination. Schedules change severaltimes during the year and are postedonline or at any of the ferry terminals.The Anacortes Ferry is located at 2100Ferry Terminal Road on the west sideof town, approximately 3.5 milesfrom Downtown Anacortes.

Skagit County also has its ownferry system, transporting people, ve-hicles and goods between Anacortesand Guemes Island in under 5 min-utes. The fleet is comprised of onlyone ferry, capable of carrying approx-imately 20 cars per trip. Rates are ap-proximately $9 per standard vehiclefor a round trip and $3 for walk onpassengers. The Guemes Island ferrydock is located at 6th Street & I Av-enue, just 1/3 of a mile west of Com-mercial Avenue.

Rainbow BridgeThe Rainbow Bridge connects

La Conner to the southernmostportion of Fidalgo Island, crossingthe Swinomish Channel whichextends from Skagit Bay to PadillaBay. The bridge was completed in1957 and has been burnt-orangesince the day the first coat of basepaint was applied. The bridge wasto be painted green, just like all ofthe others being built during thattime, but strong local support forthe color eventually sealed the fate ofthe now photographically famousRainbow Bridge.

Gaches MansionOne of the most historic

buildings in all of Skagit County isthe Gaches Mansion, located on 2ndStreet. The three-story Mansionwith over 20 rooms was built forGeorge and Louisa Gaches in 1891as their personal residence whenthey moved from England. TheGaches brothers owned the J&GGaches Mercantile which waseventually moved to Seattle. In

1905 Dr. G.E. Howe purchased theMansion and turned it into SkagitCounty’s first hospital until hesold it just 4 years later. Between1909 and 1927, the Mansion wasowned by the Vaughn Family, whowere part owners in the local grocerystore. In 1927 the Mansion wasconverted into apartments withnumerous alterations to the floorplan made in order to accommodateadditional living quarters. In1973 the building caught on fireand was vacated completely. Theextensive fire damage left theentire third floor exposed to theelements and it was thought thatthe building would have to betorn down. The La ConnerLandmarks Group was foundedin 1974 and brought the Mansionback to its original glory. For 14years, starting in 1981, what isnow known as the Museum ofNorthwest Art was located on the2nd floor of the Mansion. HISTORY FACTMount Vernon was named after

the plantation estate of GeorgeWashington, first President of theUnited States.

The first settlers on the banks ofthe Skagit River, in a place thatwould eventually be called MountVernon, were Jasper Gates andJoseph Dwelley. They arrived in1870, several years before HarrisonClothier and E.G. English who werelater recognized as the city’s founders.

Hotels and saloons opened upalong the banks of the Skagit Riverto house and cater to the many thatwere coming to take part in thearea’s first industry, logging.

Mount Vernon's future was se-cured when it was chosen to be theSkagit County seat. Today, thecounty jail and most Skagit Countygovernment offices are located inMount Vernon.

Lake CommunitiesIn addition to rivers, streams,

mountains and islands, SkagitCounty also boasts a number oflakes. The four largest are ClearLake, Big Lake, Lake McMurray andLake Cavanaugh. All four are lo-cated east of Mount Vernon andhave year-round residents. Popula-tions of people and boats are attheir highest during the summermonths. All have public boatlaunches and are great for fishing,kayaking and swimming. Big LakeThe most populated lake in the

county, Big Lake, has seen a tremen-dous amount of growth in the past10 years. Located along Highway 9,just 3 miles from the city limits ofMount Vernon, Big Lake offers a9-hole golf course, an elementaryschool, and one of the best fireworksshows in Washington State onJuly 3rd. Clear LakeLocated between Mount Vernon

and Sedro-Woolley, Clear Lake was atthe center of the logging boom in theearly 1900’s. At one time over 1,000people lived in the town. In 1925 themill failed and took many of the localbusinesses with it. During the sum-mer, Clear Lake is one of the bestswimming locations in the county.For an off-season swim, join severalhundred “spirited” locals for the An-nual Penguin Dip on January 1st.

Lake CavanaughThe most remote of the four

lakes is Lake Cavanaugh. Tucked upin the hills at over 1,000 feet in eleva-tion, Lake Cavanaugh is one of SkagitCounty’s best kept secrets. Sur-rounded by homes, it is the largestlake at 1.3 square miles and offerstremendous views of the foothillsand Cascade Mountains. The com-munity has an active association andhosts an annual fun run which takesplace on August 6th.

Lake McMurrayThe smallest of the four lakes is

Lake McMurray at .2 square miles insize. The lake is located just 5 mileseast of the I-5 Conway exit and 4miles south of Big Lake on Highway9, with speed restricted to 8 mph.Homes surround much of the lake,with fishing, swimming and kayak-ing being the most popular activities.Lake McMurray’s busiest day of theyear is opening day of fishing season.

Conway’s roots stretch back to 1873 when it was deemed a riverboat

town. Due to its ideal location, the Great Northern Railway built

a station in Conway in 1891. Since then, Conway has blossomed

into a small town of friendly locals who are proud of their community,

farms and small business district. Visitors will find antiques, a clothing bou-

tique, wine tasting, and a historic pub known for their oysters. The town is

also a gateway in April for visitors driving through the tulip fields and has

become a stopping point for the motorcycle rally during the Annual Oyster

Run in September. Located at the entrance to Skagit County from the south,

many visitors will start their exploration of the valley here.

HISTORY FACTSIt was in the fall of 1882 that John

P. Millett and William McKay en-tered the dense forest of cedar,spruce, fir and small timber and,disturbing the deer, bear and cougar,erected a shack and made ready forthe establishment of a logging campground which now stands as the Cityof Burlington. It was officially incor-porated on June 16, 1902.

Berry Dairy Days began in 1937by the local volunteer firemen as afundraiser for new equipment.The celebration included a parade,carnival and the “World’s LargestShortcake” which served more than5,000 people.

Northwest Skagit CountyNorthwest Skagit County offers a

network of rural towns that are a blendof old time charm and the amenities oftoday. This portion of the county in-cludes large tracts of farmland, rollinghills, specialty shops and restaurantsand access to miles of shoreline.

AlgerLocated along Old Highway 99, the

town of Alger was once known as alogging camp, but today is the centerof everything racing in SkagitCounty. Skagit Speedway has been inAlger for 50 years showcasing high-octane racing around a 3/10 mileoval to fans from around the U.S.and Canada. Racing takes place everySaturday night between April andSeptember.

Bay ViewLocated between the Skagit Regional

Airport and Padilla Bay, Bay View ishome to a small residential community,the Bay View State Park and theBreazeale Interpretive Center. The centeroffers indoor exhibits, a reference library,saltwater aquariums, and views to thewest across Padilla Bay to Fidalgo Island.

BlanchardLocated between the base of the

Chuckanut Mountains and Samish Bay,today’s small town of Blanchard was abustling place between 1885 and 1925when the Blanchard Logging Companywas operating. As logging began to di-minish, oyster farming was quick to takeits place in the 1920’s. Today the TaylorShellfish Farm can be found on Chuck-anut Drive just north of Blanchard.

BowOriginally named Brownsville, Bow

became home to a post office and a pop-ulation boom when the Great NorthernRailway decided to reroute its railwaysaround the Chuckanut Mountains.Today Bow is primarily a residentialcommunity overlooking Samish Bay.

EdisonDowntown Edison is a prime example

of what Skagit County is all about. Thequaint town is located at the intersectionof Farm to Market Road and Bow HillRoad and was one of the first accreditedhigh schools in Washington State. Thistightly packed commercial district hasartisan bread makers, a gallery, specialtyshops and two famous watering holeswith excellent food and nightlife.

Samish IslandLocated at the northern end of Padilla

Bay, Samish Island is roughly 3.5 mileslong and 1 mile wide. The island hasbeen accessible via the Samish IslandRoad since the dikes were built in 1930.Before that time it was surrounded bywater with Samish Bay to the north andPadilla By to the south. The island has480 homes and is the headquarters ofthe Blau Oyster Company.

Padilla BayPadilla Bay is located directly

between the Skagit Valley, and theSamish, Guemes and Fidalgo Is-lands. Padilla Bay National Estuar-ine Research Reserve is an 8 mile by3 mile estuary that is so importantto the local ecosystem that in 1980the area was named a national re-serve by the National Oceanic & At-mospheric Administration. Theentire bay is so shallow that when

the tide goes out, much of the areaturns into mud flats, allowing vege-tation to grow. There are nearly8,000 acres of eelgrass in Padilla Bay,offering wonderful habitat forsalmon, crab, clams, shrimp andother invertebrates. The area is aknown feeding ground for greatblue herons, bald eagles, otters andmany other species. The Padilla BayShore Trail, one of the most accessi-ble and best walking, jogging and

biking trails in Skagit County, is lo-cated adjacent to the bay. The 2.25mile path along the dike allows fortremendous wildlife viewing and anup close look at one of the mosthealthy, least disturbed and most bi-ologically productive estuaries onPuget Sound.

Chuckanut DriveAlong Skagit County’s north-

ern-most waterfront, you will findChuckanut Drive. This 21 mile cor-ridor leads from the flat farmlandthrough the Chuckanut Mountainsto Bellingham, the largest city be-tween Seattle and Canada. Twistingand turning, the road climbsquickly into the forest canopy over-looking Samish Bay and the SanJuan Islands. There are several din-ing choices along the way, offeringsucculent northwest seafood in abeautiful setting. Strap on your boots and come visit the one-of-a-kind city of Sedro-

Woolley. At the height of its day in the late 1800’s, eleven trains arrived in

Sedro-Woolley daily, the timber industry was prospering, and settlers

eagerly established homesteads near the rail lines. However, after a disastrous fire

in 1911 that leveled most of the downtown businesses, Sedro-Woolley was forced

to rebuild. During its reconstruction, the downtown buildings were assembled

out of brick and have therefore retained much of their original architecture.

Today, many people first arrive in Sedro-Woolley in passing due to its location

as a gateway city to the North Cascades. After just a single glance, the historical

flavor becomes evident and the western charm of the city lures them in for more.

Itis a full-service town where cus-tomers can expect friendly smilesand reasonable prices withinclothing shops, antique dealers,espresso stands, quaint cafes, lo-cally loved diners, hardware stores,pharmacies, and gift shops.

Some of the most beloved at-tractions in Sedro-Woolley revolvearound its unique history. TheSedro-Woolley Museum tells thestory of early logging, mining, andagriculture. It features miniatureexhibits of the town along with re-stored automotives and loggingtrucks. Woodfest and the Log-gerodeo also take spectators backin time. Each of these events spot-light phenomenal wood carvings,workmanship, educational ex-hibits, and guaranteed fun for thewhole family.

When in Sedro-Woolley, it ishard to resist the temptation tovisit the fast-paced Skagit River oreven get down and dirty in someof the local parks. Riverfront Park,which is situated on 60-acres lin-ing the banks of the Skagit River,has a boat launch and river access.It also provides picnic shelters andtables, BBQ pits, baseball fields, anRV park, amphitheatre, and anoff-leash dog park. LymanLyman is a small town located

just east of Sedro-Woolley on High-way 20, nestled in the beautiful Sk-agit River Valley. Abundant timber,fish, mineral resources and NativeAmerican history, give the town arich heritage. Today the town hasits own grade school and water util-ity and is home to over 400 resi-dents. Located in Lyman is thehistoric Minkler Mansion, built in1891 by Birdsey Minker who be-

came a State Senator in 1906. Themansion is on the National Regis-ter of Historic Places and can beseen from the Skagit River.

HamiltonFurther east on Highway 20

from Lyman is the town of Hamil-ton. Situated alongside the SkagitRiver, much of the town is prone toflooding every couple of years. Theearly 1900’s were boom times forHamilton due mostly in part to

timber harvesting and the railroadthat was built.

Located 23 miles east of Sedro-Woolley along Highway 20 is the

proud town of Concrete with a population of approximately 900

residents. After a number of name changes between 1890 and 1909,

the town name of Concrete eventually stuck. The Washington Portland Ce-

ment Company and the Superior Portland Cement Company supplied the

materials to build the Gorge, Ross and Diablo Lake Dams, and were opened

in 1905 and 1908 respectively. The town is home to a number of historic

buildings and the Henry Thomas Bridge. When completed in 1918, the

bridge was the longest single span cement bridge in the world and is listed

on the Washington State and National Historic Registers.

Cascade TrailThe Cascade Trail parallels High-

way 20 and occupies the route of anabandoned railroad that was built in1900. The trail is 22.5 miles in lengthand connects Concrete to Sedro-Woolley. The surface is crushed rockand is open to those on horseback,bicyclists, runners and walkers.

Cascade Days CelebrationTaking place on August 17th

Concrete TheatreOriginally opened in 1924, the

Concrete Theatre has had a colorfulpast, serving as the entertainmentcenter of Concrete and Eastern Sk-agit County. In 1987 the theatre wasadded to the Washington State His-torical Registry and while there havebeen many years in which the the-atre was not in operation, scheduledshowings started in February 2010with digital projection equipmentadded in 2012.

Community Profile – North Cascades

Baker Lake/Lake Shannon Located just to the north of Con-

crete are Lake Shannon and BakerLake. This area offers tremendous op-portunities for enjoying the great out-doors. Lake Shannon is approximately7.5 miles long and was formed in the1920’s with the construction of thefirst of two dams by the Baker RiverHydroelectric Project. The 285 foottall Lower Baker Dam first produced

power in 1925.Lake Shannon is located in Sk-

agit County, with Baker Lake inWhatcom County to the north.The only access to Baker Lake andthe Baker River by road is throughSkagit County. Baker Lake is ap-proximately 9 miles long with theBaker River running 30 miles tothe north. The Upper Baker Damwas built in 1959 and is 312 feet

tall. The Baker Lake RecreationArea offers a number of camp-grounds or the year-round BakerLake Lodge can act as your basecamp to adventure.

At the eastern reaches of Skagit County you will find the entrance to

the North Cascades National Park. With over 1,000 square miles of

mountain peaks, valleys, glaciers and wilderness, the North Cascades

are Skagit County’s backdoor playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

Traveling east of Concrete, the next town approximately 8.5 miles away

is Rockport. This town is home to just over 100 full-time residents, but is

host to thousands of campers and hikers during the summer months. The

Howard Miller Steelhead Park includes a popular boat launch, actively used

by fishermen and rafters alike. Rockport State Park is located on the north

side of Highway 20 and includes 670 acres of ancient forest. 5,400 foot Sauk

Mountain towers above Rockport and is accessible via a seven mile gravel

road on the west side of town.

MarblemountAnother 8 miles east of Rock-

port is the town of Marblemount.Home to 250 residents, this town hasa golden past serving as a tradingpost in the late 1800’s. During thistime, there were approximately 1,500gold prospectors in the region. TheNorth Cascades National ParkWilderness Information Center isopen from May through Octoberand is the primary location to obtainbackcountry permits. The center islocated one mile north of Highway20 on Ranger Station Road.

Newhalem & Diablo Both small towns are actually

in Whatcom County, but are onlyaccessible via Skagit County dur-ing the winter months as Highway20 is closed between Diablo andMazama due to heavy snow. Com-pany towns were built here tohouse the workers during the con-struction of the Gorge, Diablo, andRoss Lake Dams during a 50 yearspan beginning in 1918. Adjacentto the Newhalem Creek Camp-ground is the North Cascades Visi-tor Center which features exhibitson the park’s natural beauty andcultural history. The center isopen seven days a week betweenMay and October. For an upclose and personal look at theremote Skagit River Gorge be-tween June and September, takea Skagit Tour. United General Hospital inSedro-Woolley has been a vitalpart of the community since 1965.The hospital serves Public Hospi-tal District 304, geographically oneof the largest in the state, includ-ing Burlington, Sedro-Woolley,Bow-Edison, Bayview, Samish Is-land, Lyman, Hamilton, Concrete,Rockport, Marblemount, ClearLake and portions of Mount Vernon,and is governed by a five-memberboard of commissioners.
