On September 21st to 25th, 2015 students will eat, sleep and fundraise in more than 20 unique student-designed and

built shacks on the historic Brickyard. Shack-A-Thon is one of the largest and most successful fundraisers

at NC State and receives extensive media coverage from local TV, newspapers, blogs, Twitter feeds, and Facebook posts.

This goal will fund the construction of an entire Habitat Wake home.

2015 GOAL: $65,000

What is Shack-A-Thon?

Shack-A-Thon is a student-run fundraiser that started at NC State in 1998 with one shack,

and a few passionate students wanting to bring awareness to the issue of affordable housing.

Over the past 18 years, the event has raised more than $275,000 for Habitat for Humanity of

Wake County, with 40 student organizations erecting over 20 shacks each year in the Brickyard

on the NC State campus. With the help of hundreds of students, the 2014 Shack-A-Thon

fundfundraising effort raised more than $46,000, an increase of nearly 25% from 2013. Largely

due to the increasing success of Shack-A-Thon, the NC State Habitat for Humanity Chapter has

helped sponsor and build 22 homes since the chapter was founded in 1991.

2014 NC State Family

2014 NC State Sponsored FamilyStephen Mwaura and his family immigrated to America like so many of our

ancestors before us looking for a better life for his family. He found what he

was looking for right here in Raleigh, North Carolina. Stephen immediately

began working 65 to 80 hours a week at two jobs sacrificing time with his

family so that he could keep a roof over their heads. With rent payments

taking more than 50% of his income, he turned to Habitat Wake for a hand taking more than 50% of his income, he turned to Habitat Wake for a hand

up and not a hand out. Even while working two jobs, Stephen and his family

somehow managed to put in another 250 hours of “sweat equity” helping

to build their Habitat home and the homes of their neighbors. The family

also completed classes on homeownership as required by Habitat Wake.

With a Habitat home, Stephen is now able to pay an affordable mortgage,

build equity in his home, and spend more time with his family. We couldn’t

be more proud of the Mwaura family. be more proud of the Mwaura family.

Habitat for Humanity of Wake CountyHabitat for Humanity of Wake County builds safe, affordable houses for qualified

homebuyers regardless of race, religion or background. Each Habitat home is built

in partnership with homeowner families, sponsors, and volunteers. Our houses are

safe, affordable, and are sold for no profit to the partner family who repays an

affordable mortgage over 20 years. Homeowners attend a series of workshops on affordable mortgage over 20 years. Homeowners attend a series of workshops on

financial literacy and home maintenance, so that they are well prepared to be

homeowners.
