MY RESEARCH

• Background in practice-based research

• Social scientist

• Qualitative methods

• Human experience

• Foci:– Information experience (and particularly IX in social

media)

– Teaching and learning

Page 5: [2016 s2-ifn600] week-1-tutorial

MY RESEARCHRight now my research focus is a teaching and learning project investigating the expectations, preferences and experiences of students studying in a dual mode degree. I'm collaborating on this project with two of my colleagues, Dr Ellie Abdi and Prof Helen Partridge, as well as three research assistants. We'll be wrapping up this project in the next couple of months. The project involved two forms of data collection: semistructuredinterviews, and a questionnaire. The participants were students in the library and information practice degrees. We're currently in the analysis phase.

MY PROJECT SUMMARY• Problem space: Expectations, needs, experiences of

students in a dual mode degree• Research questions: What are students’ preferences,

expectations, and experiences with regard to their learning experiences? How might this inform development of a student-centered framework for learning for a dual mode cohort?

• Participant group: Students in LIS programs at QUT• Data collection tools: Interviews and questionnaire• Analysis: Thematic analysis to identify key themes in the

data• Outcome: A framework for multimode education

HOW TO SUCCEED IN THIS UNIT

Page 23: [2016 s2-ifn600] week-1-tutorial

FOUNDATIONAL EXPECTATIONS[Or: I want to pass]Demonstrated:• understanding of the research process and its components• understanding of how the components of research inter-

relate and link together• ability to apply your understanding of research to a specific

topic that is of interest to you• ability to critically analyse your own work and the work of

others, in terms of the research process• ability to collaborate with others and to communicate your

ideas effectively

Page 24: [2016 s2-ifn600] week-1-tutorial

REAL EXPECTATIONS[Or: I want to do better than pass]All of the foundational expectations plus:• Consistent demonstration of high order thinking:– Critical thinking– Creative thinking – Logical thinking– Pragmatic thinking

• Consistent demonstration of attention to detail and quality in both written and oral expression

• A demonstration of the ability to effectively participate and utilise activities and supporting resources

Page 25: [2016 s2-ifn600] week-1-tutorial

TIPS• Be active

– Participate in tutorials and complete homework exercises to develop your thinking skills.

• Be communicative– You will need to think for yourself and come up with your own ideas,

but the best ideas often arise from regularly interacting with others.• Be constructive

– Learning and high level thinking are constructive processes. Always look for ways of using the resources available to you to better yourself and improve your own learning

• Be reflective– Learn to critically analyse your own thinking, and regularly consider

how to adapt to improve and reach your next goal.

KATE’S EXTRA TIPS

1. Do the preparatory task! Every time. Even if it feels repetitive.

2. Focus! One idea. Iterate. Refine. Narrow. Broaden. Narrow. Refine. Rephrase. Keep working at it. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

3. Use me to your best advantage! I’m offering you regular feedback on your work. Take it!
