BRITA – a multi-product company
In 1970, the founder of BRITA, Heinz Hankammer, invented the first household water filter pitcher. Today, the company develops, produces and distributes a wide range of products and solutions for consumers and commercial customers.
There are various reasons why consumers use their BRITA products. Some wish to avoid the build-up of limescale in their coffee machines, tea drinkers wish to enjoy a perfect cup of Darjeeling, while others seek to improve the taste of their chlorinated tap water. As an expert on the individu-alization and optimization of drinking water, BRITA has developed products for varying consumer needs.
Popular classic – BRITA as kitchen aidBRITA cartridges contain a combination of ion exchanger and activated carbon. This combination features in all BRITA products, which are primarily used in the kitchen. Alongside the household water filters, they also include pipe-connected systems. Moreover, numerous renowned manu-facturers of electric appliances integrate BRITA filters into their kitchen appliances. Customers value the improved smell and taste of the water and the aroma development of hot drinks, as well as in particular the protection given their kitchen appliances. Carbonate hardness is lowered during filtration, thus preventing lime-scale deposits, for example in coffee machines. In addition, metals such as lead and copper in the water are reduced, which may be present in old household pipes.
Technology for the special enjoyment of waterBRITA has developed a further filter technology and corresponding products for all those who like to drink still water. Users can filter water anywhere with the water filter carafe (fill&serve) or porta-ble water filter bottle (fill&go) – whether doing sports, being in the office or on the sofa. With these products, the enjoyment of filtered water is no longer bound to a kitchen environment. To this end, BRITA invented a filter that is small and flat – the MicroDisc. This technology is based on activated carbon and optimizes the taste of tap water particularly well.

Filter solutions for commercial customers BRITA offers two different product categories for commercial customers. The first encompasses pipe-connected water dispensers which filter tap water and optimize its taste. They are suitable for offices, production halls, schools, restaurants and hygiene-sensitive zones such as care homes and hospitals. Depending on the model, water is dispensed still, sparkling, chilled, at room tempe-rature or even hot. On company premises or in public buildings this kind of water dispenser enables constant access to low-cost and good-tasting drinking water.
Water optimization for the hospitality segment BRITA’s second commercial pillar is water filter solutions for the hospitality segment (hotels, restaurants, catering firms and providers of vending machines). Whether in coffee machines, combi-steamers, ovens or dishwashers, BRITA filter solutions protect the high-grade professional appliances from lime-scale deposits. They can be individually set, given that the composition of the water can vary, and thus enable a constant water quality. This also means a constant supply of good-tasting water for the preparation of drinks. Be it in Paris, London or Frankfurt, with these so-lutions customers can always look forward to a specialty tea or coffee at their favourite hospitality chain that precisely meets their expectations.

BRITA – enduringly successful
The production of plastic bottles requires energy, huge amounts of CO2 are emitted during trans-portation, and then countless empty bottles end up in floating rubbish dumps carpeting the oceans. It is time to sustainably change the way we drink water. This is the vision pursued by the BRITA Group, one of the leading companies in the field of drinking water optimization. Founded in 1966, today the company that invented the household water filter pitcher develops, produces and distributes a wide range of innovative solutions for drinking water optimization and in-dividualization. Its success is based on the far-sighted idea of company founder Heinz Hankammer: He set out to optimize tap water simply and practically and as a result patented the first household water filter in 1970.
Individual solutions for sustainable consumptionBRITA has been continually growing for many years. Today, alongside water filters for household use, the company supplies filter solutions for use in professional equipment in the hospitality and hotel sectors as well as vending machines. Moreover, in 2010 BRITA entered the market segment for pipe-connected water dispensers. The company has continually adjusted its product range to the growing and changing needs of its customers. A common trait of all products is that they help to protect the environment. Filtering water in private households and the use of water dispensers in schools and offices help reduce the use of plastic bottles and therefore plastic waste. Water filters for the hospitality segmet protect the high-quality appliances from limescale and extend the life of the machines.
Value-oriented family-run companyBRITA is an owner-managed and value-driven family company. Founder Heinz Hankammer suc-cessfully established BRITA – named after his daughter – as an innovation leader in the area of drinking water optimization. When the industry pioneer left the Executive Board and assumed a po-sition on the Supervisory Board in 1999, his son Markus Hankammer assumed management of the company. Its value-oriented corporate culture, the approach to the valuable resource of drinking water and the corporate and personal responsibility of an owner-managed family company have all combined to make BRITA a sustainable company.
This also plays a role in BRITA’s success. Its sales figures are continually growing: On average sales have grown by 9.4 percent annually since 2000. In 2016 sales amounted to EUR 469 million, 83 percent of which was generated outside Germany.

BRITA milestones
1966 BRITA GmbH was founded on 1 July 1966 by Heinz Hankammer. The first product is a filter for demineralizing water.
1970 The first household water filter was invented.
1980 Start of international sales. The first professional water filter for commercial use is launched on the market.
1987 The company’s first subsidiary was established: Production facility in Switzerland.
1992 Filter cartridges are recycled for the first time.
1996-1999 First time of multi-component injection moulding procedures in the manufacturing process.
1999 Heinz Hankammer Hankammer is appointed Chair of the newly establis-hed Supervisory Board and his son Markus Hankammer is appointed CEO of the BRITA Group.
2004 Launch of BRITA Integrated Solutions (BRITA water filtration technology in kitchen appliances). Opening of production facility in Bicester (UK).
2005 Filter cartridge MAXTRA and jug water filter Elemaris, Marella and Liquelli (for Japan). The company’s tenth subsidiary worldwide was established in Japan.
2006 Filter cartridge INTENZA for BRITA Integrated Solutions and cartridge AquaAroma Crema.
2007 Opening of BRITA Arena in Wiesbaden.

BRITA – leading in research and development
BRITA is an ‘inventor company’. The first product was the so-called AquaDeMat, developed by company founder Heinz Hankammer in 1967. It was an appliance for the production of demineral- ized water for petrol stations and car garages. Yet it was his invention of 1970 that was to the lay the foundations for BRITA’s global success, namely the household water filter. Today, almost 50 years on, BRITA has a dedicated R&D department with more than 100 staff members. Their work is in- formed by the company vision: to sustainably change the way we drink water.
The water expertsBRITA boasts specialist knowledge of the composition of drinking water worldwide in order to be able to offer suitable products for various countries. Be it in Germany, Turkey or Japan, BRITA develops diverse filter solutions to optimize tap water in different regions. One particular focus at BRITA is research into the taste of water, as well as coffee and tea. The company has set up a spe-cial lab specifically for sensory analysis research, which is headed by a trained water sommelière. The findings of the research conducted internally are supplemented and confirmed by independent external experts and recognized test institutes.
Niche product development For BRITA, as a company driven by invention, product development is part of its DNA and is highly valued. Each year no less than five percent of turnover is invested in the R&D department, which develops products designed to meet all kinds of needs among diverse target groups. Be it water filter carafes for consumers, a filter cartridge for industry or water dispensers for offices, the same stan-dards apply for all products, namely that materials that come into contact with drinking water are sub-ject to strict legal requirements in terms of food-safe and hygienic standards. BRITA is well positioned here, thanks to its specialist knowledge from its research into drinking water, cutting-edge product development technologies and extensive resources, such as its own microbiology lab.
