This season, the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance celebrates
the Titans of music and dance, including Ludwig van Beethoven with
the 250th anniversary of his birth. We also celebrate Neal's 25 spectacular years
leading the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Ballet Series showcases the athleticism and grace of our dancers with
three exciting repertory programs and the best holiday tradition
in Dayton, The Nutcracker.
Two of the most beloved operas, a rising star who will take your breath away,
and a celebration of the operas that started it all will take the Mead Theatre stage
in this season’s Opera Series.
The Philharmonic’s Masterworks Series brings glorious works for piano, violin,
cello, and oboe performed by artists both long established and on the ascent, and
symphonies that have shaken the world will thunder throughout
the Schuster Center.
The more intimate Recital Series includes two chamber concerts at the Dayton Art
Institute, the Opera Star Recital, and a Wildcard!
This season, the Family Series includes the family favorite PhilharMonster, matinee
performances of both The Nutcracker and Cinderella, and a journey through
the Musical World of Harry Potter.

Inspired by Handel’s Messiah, Joseph Haydn composed The Creation as a musical rendition of one of the greatest stories ever written. Composed in 1799, the work the work is considered by many to be Haydn’s true masterpiece. With its libretto delineated in both German and English, the oratorio was the first original bilingual composition ever written. The Creation quickly became more popular than any other work throughout Europe and was accessible to all levels of listeners, from the aristocrats to the bourgeoisie.
This glorious work by Haydn is the perfect way to officially kick off the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance’s 2019–2020 Titans Season. Dayton Opera, Dayton Ballet, and Dayton Philharmonic proudly present this musical Titan in a collaboration that showcases the strength and beauty of each art form under a single guiding vision, giving this massive oratorio the performance it so richly deserves.

Phantom Dances at the Victoria Theatre
October 24 (7:30 pm), 25 (8 pm), 26 (8 pm), & 27 (3 pm), 2019Dayton Ballet presents a repertory performance of ballets fitting for the autumn season. Four works for the artistry from four imaginative female choreographers include a new work to Dayton Ballet from Penny Saunders, works by returning choreographers Amy Siewart and Nicole Haskins, and a world premiere to celebrate Día de Las Muertas, honoring the souls of loved ones far and near.

Love Vignettes: Carmen and Butterfly Suite at the Victoria Theatre
February 13 (7:30 pm), 14 (8 pm), 15 (8 pm) & 16 (3 pm), 2020Two of the most famous operas in the repertoire come to life on stage in a new and unexpected way—through the power and emotion of dance. First, Georges Bizet’s passionate Spanish seductress Carmen, who cannot be tied by any one lover and who pays the ultimate price for her deepest desires. Then, Puccini’s heart-wrenching Madame Butterfly, who suffers a similar fate in the name of love, as she does what she feels she must to preserve her honor. Has heartbreak ever been so graceful and so beautiful?
Innovations at the Victoria Theatre
April 2 (7:30 pm), 3 (8 pm), 4 (8 pm) & 5 (3 pm), 2020Dayton Ballet closes its Season of Titans with a varied collection of beautiful dances, including a new work from internationally acclaimed choreographer Ma Cong, a vignette of A Streetcar Named Desire, and much more in a program called Innovations.

La Bohème November 15 (8 pm) & 17 (3 pm), 2019Giacomo Puccini | Patrick Reynolds conductor Gary Briggle stage director Love blossoms amid the revels and hardships of a group of young Bohemians renting a Parisian garret. Come prepared to laugh and cry, and whet your appetite for all the festive activity at Café Momus. You’ll leave knowing why La Bohème remains Puccini’s most popular work and ranks in the world’s top three opera favorites.
La Cenerentola (Cinderella) February 28 (8 pm) & March 1 (3 pm), 2020Gioachino Rossini | Clinton Smith conductor | Kathleen Clawson stage director Set a classic children’s tale to Rossini’s sparkling music, and what do you get? La Cenerentola: Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant. Opera Star Recital: Angel Blue March 22 (3 pm), 2020Angel Blue sopranoRecognized for her beautiful timbre and stunning stage presence, soprano Angel Blue's voice has been hailed for its shining, agile upper register and "smoky" middle register. From London to the Met, Angel Blue is quickly establishing herself as one of the best vocalists of her generation. Don’t miss your chance to see her grace the stage of the Schuster Center in 2020.
Going for Baroque! April 24 (8 pm) & 26 (3 pm), 2020Neal Gittleman conductor | Gary Briggle stage director | Karen Russo Burke choreographer Dayton Opera travels back to the beautiful beginnings of opera in a first-time exploration of the Baroque period of music. The Schuster swells with ornate arias from operas composed in the colorful musical style and masterful vocal technique that emerged from the Renaissance. The program will also feature dancers from Dayton Ballet and the Dayton Opera Chorus.

The Season Opening Spectacular, produced as a stunning collaboration with the Ballet and Philharmonic, presents Haydn’s Creation in a performance like no other to open the 2019–2020 Titans Season. The mind-blowing Turangalîla Symphony is ecstatic, otherworldly, and completely original. A devout and steadfast faith inspired all of Messiaen’s music. "I am convinced that joy exists," Messiaen once said, "convinced that the invisible exists more than the visible, and that joy is beyond sorrow, and beauty is beyond horror."

New Year’s Eve: Bella Italia! Signature Event at the Schuster Center

Prior to the concert, tasty appetizers and sweets will be available for purchase in the Wintergarden, and during intermission the audience can toast one another with flutes of champagne. The performance itself will feature all three facets of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance—dancers from Dayton Ballet, vocalists from Dayton Opera, and the instrumentalists of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. And, as always, a splash of color ends the evening with a balloon drop at the finale. Celebrate New Year’s Eve a bit early, with the festivities running from 8 pm to 10 pm. Afterward, you’ll still have time for another party or to head home in time to watch the ball drop. This event has become a Miami Valley favorite . . . reserve your seats early!
