Dear St. Mary’s Parishioners:

On June 6, 2020, Bishop Scharfenberger
announced that parishes in the Diocese of
Albany may resume public liturgies at 25
percent capacity, if they meet safety protocols
for Covid19. Our Parish Safety Committee has been
working diligently preparing all necessary documents for
submission. So many of you have shared with me that
fasting from Church in person has made you more aware
and more appreciative of the good things we hunger for
Communion with God and with each other.

We look forward to reopening St. Mary’s Church,
hopefully in midJuly, while maintaining the diocesan
protocols. Holy Mass will continue online and you are
encouraged to join us. Out of loving concern for the most
vulnerable among us, the dispensation from the obligation
to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days remains in force.
More information will be mailed to households in the
coming weeks.

A year ago St. Mary’s Parish conducted a parish census due
to the outdated process. At that time I requested that all
parishioners who registered with the parish prior to 2019,
complete a Parish Registration form. Though many
parishioners did complete these forms, many did not. Now
more than ever, it is imperative that we have this
information in our parish database, to protect you and
others. Every parish is mandated to have an accurate
database of registered parishioners, and we must comply
with Diocesan protocols. Volunteers called all registered
parishioners and we discovered a great deal of the
information was incorrect/outdated. I plead with you once
again to update your registration. As we resume Masses,
everyone will have to preregister for the meantime, as we
are limited to 100 seats per Mass. I will be offering extra
Masses throughout the week to accommodate our numbers.
I am very conscious of the large numbers at our Masses and
out of respect for current/active parishioners we will use
our updated database for seating. Therefore this information
will be required as part of attendance at liturgy to meet the
required criteria of opening. Since there will be limited
seating at each Mass we’ve been instructed to use our
current database.

Please access the registration form on the St. Mary’s
website at https://stmarysballstonspa.org/registerasa
parishioner and complete both front and back, and return
by: dropping off at the parish office, mailing to the parish
office, or by sending via email to [email protected].
If you do not have internet access please call the office and
we will gladly mail you a form to update your information.
Thank you for your help with this important endeavor!

Yours in Christ,
Fr. Francis Vivacqua
Pastor
"I’m sure you know all too well the stresses that come with the social isolation
warranted by COVID-19. Our parish families are facing similar challenges, all
while trying to adapt and maintain critical ministries that serve so many. They rely
on the weekly collection to fund these programs, operate their facilities and pay
their staff. Every week that passes without an offertory collection, puts our
parishes at greater financial risk.
During this challenging time, I want to repeat what Jesus said so often, “Do not be
afraid.” We will get through this together—even though we may be apart—
because we are a people of faith, the Body of Christ, and distance (social or
otherwise) cannot divide or diminish that. We will continue to lift each other up in prayer and to gather, even if
only virtually, around the Table of the Lord.
—Bishop Scharfenberger

Beginning June 22, the Feast of Saints Thomas More and John Fisher, the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops celebrates Religious Freedom Week. Join us in
promoting religious freedom For the Good of All.
All people desire to know their Creator. All people have a natural impulse to seek the
good and to live in accordance with that good. All people can flourish when they
pursue the truth about God and respond to the truth. Religious freedom means that all
people have the space to flourish. Religious freedom is both an American value and an
important part of Catholic teaching on human dignity. When we promote religious freedom, we promote the common good and
strengthen the life of our nation and the community of nations. For additional information go to www.usccb.org/freedom,
Twitter: @USCCBFreedom, for text and action alerts, text “FREEDOM” to 84576.
Religious Freedom Week 2020: For the Good of All—Join us, June 22 - June 29, as we pray, reflect, and take action on religious
liberty, both here in this country and abroad.
June 22: Freedom to Serve in Health Care
June 23: Respect for Houses of Worship
June 24: Religious Minorities in China
June 25: Adoption and Foster Care
June 26: Border Wall Dispute in the Diocese of Brownsville
June 27: Catholic Schools - Religious Freedom Week: June 27, 2020 - Catholic Schools
Pray that Catholic schools in our country would be free to teach the truth about God
and his creation.
Reflect
Education is central to the Church’s mission. In fact, one of the Spiritual Works of
Mercy is to teach. In the U.S., the Catholic school system grew out of necessity, due to the wave of 19th Century Catholic
immigrants who felt unwelcome in the “public” school system. Since then, Catholic schools have been significant anchor
institutions in many neighborhoods, benefitting even those who are not their students. Catholic leaders have played a leading role
in ensuring that all children have access to quality education. Education is what Catholics do, and an America without Catholic
schools is unimaginable. Catholic schools need the space to operate in accordance with Catholic convictions if they are to
continue to be a source of vitality for our society.

O Mary, you always shine on our path
as a sign of salvation and of hope.
We entrust ourselves to you,
Health of the Sick,
who at the cross took part
in Jesus’ pain,
keeping your faith firm.
You, Salvation of the
Roman People,
know what we need,
and we are sure you will provide
so that, as in Cana of Galilee,
we may return to joy

after this time of trial.

and to do as we are

who has taken upon himself
our sufferings

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God.
Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but
deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Like with all the Prophets, Jeremiah’s
situation was often unenviable. Unlike,
say, Joel Osteen or other Protestant
megachurch televangelists, Jeremiah
did not enjoy widespread fame,
worldly respect or wealth. Far from it,
he was often alienated, mocked and
persecuted by his own countrymen.
His crime? Boldly proclaiming the
loving truth of God to a society who
had jettisoned God from its ranks.
Whether through outright rejection of God’s laws,
forgetfulness of His loving Covenant or through cool
indifference, Israel had lost its way. Their purpose had become
bound up in this world, in the pursuit of fame, wealth, power
and pleasure. The rich and powerful elites regularly oppressed
the poor and engaged in idolatry of all sorts. Truth did not
matter to them. The last thing these people wanted to hear was
that they were not living lives of holiness and virtue! Though
this is exactly what God needed them to hear, it was still no
wonder Jeremiah was not exactly invited to any Late Night
ancient Israelite talk shows!

All the same, God never gives up on any of us, which is why
Jeremiah and the Prophets tirelessly called Israel back to God.
God’s loving desire to restore us to holiness, truth and divine
orderthe things we are meant forculminated most
spectacularly in His sacrificial death and resurrection. One
gaze at a Crucifix says it all. St. Paul tells us in his letter to the
Romans that while sin and death entered the world through
one manAdamgrace and life entered the world through
the GodMan Jesus Christ. This is why Christ tells us in St.
Matthew’s Gospel to not be afraid! Christ says we are to only
fear rejecting Him, something no one can force us to do. No
worldly power or authority can prevent us from embracing
Christ and leading holy lives of Christian faith, hope and love.
Salvation is not found in things of this world! Through living
lives conformed to Christ and His teachings we can be a
beacon of hope and light to the world. Christ gives us the grace
to courageously remind people that HE is our true home and
reason for being. Christ never gives up on us, let us never give
up on others. With Our Lady’s help, may we be the modern
day Prophets working to restore Christ to our society, one soul
at a time.
