Skin cancer is the most com-

mon form of cancer in the

    United States. Over half of

all new cancers are skin cancers

and more than one million new

cases of skin cancer will be diag-

nosed this year in the U.S.

Approximately 10,000 people willdie of skin cancer this year. Most

skin cancers have a very high cure

rate if detected and treated early.

The primary cause of skin cancer

    is excessive sun exposure; other

    causes include radiation, viral

    infections, trauma, genetics, and

    immunosuppression.

    Types of Skin Cancers

The majority of all new skin

cancers are basal cell cancers andsquamous cell cancers; melanomas

comprise the rest. More than 76

percent of skin cancer deaths are

from melanoma, and there will be

    about 100,000 new cases of

    melanoma in 2012. One person

    dies of melanoma every hour.

    Currently one in 37 Americans

has a lifetime risk of developing

    melanoma; this incidence has

    more than tripled among

Caucasians between 1980 and2012. If detected in the early

    stages, melanoma can be treated

    successfully.

    Common Warning Signs

    A very common and early

potential sign of skin cancer is

    known as actinic keratosis (A.K).

A.K. may appear as rough, red, scaly patches, sores or crusts on

the top layer of the skin. Basal cell

    and squamous cell cancers arise

within the top layer of the skin as

a scaly area or bump that persists

    and bleeds. They usually appear

on the sun-exposed areas of the

    body, including the face, forearms,

and neck. Melanoma usuallybegins as a mottled, light-brown-

    to-black flat blemish with irregu-

lar borders. It may turn shades of

red, blue or white, crust on the

    surface, and bleed.

    I

    f youre a parent, when

    does the responsibility of

providing for your chil-dren cease to exist? When

they are 18? When they fin-

    ish trade school or college?

    After they secure their first

    job? When you stop working

    and must be dependent on

    your portfolio to live? When

you die? Or is the answer: it

    never ends?!

    I think about this ques-

tion quite often as a parent of

four wonderful kids. Withover 30 years of asking this

    question to hundreds of

    prospects and clients, one

    can imagine there have been

    many answers from couples

    and their children, too. Some

    couples disagree as to the

    answer to my question, caus-

    ing some deep friction

    between them at times. Most

    though, agree with their

spouse whether to provideor not to provide for them up

to or after a certain time in

    their childrens lives.

    Biblically, it isnt clear.

    Regardless of which book you

read, they all describe itabout the same way. The per-

    tinent pages read: Provide

    for your family. What the

    religious books dont say is

for how long and under what

    conditions. They do not say

provide when you are alive or

    when you are dead. The

books fail to mention if you

    must provide when you are

sick or when you are well.

Nor do they say when you areyoung or old. If I may para-

phrase, they just say to pro-

    vide for your family. Does

    this mean that providing for

    my family is all encompass-

    ing? Does this mean without

end, in duration of time or

    duration of your funds? Does

    this translate into: I should

    do without, so my children

may prosper? Is there a limit

    to my provisions?Interestingly, providing

can be interpreted as an edu-

    cation in a profession or

    trade, so that they may

    become self-sufficient, even-

tually being able to providefor their own children. This

    concept works very well for

    most families, but sometimes

there are bumps in the road,

like when the child loses his

    job or gets divorced, with

    some children moving back

    home with the parents that

    celebrated their childrens

    departure from the nest, only

    to find them repatriated

    under the parental roof yearslater.

    Let me offer a suggestion

to this dilemma. It is incum-

    bent among parents to teach

their children, or if they are

    unable to themselves, pro-

    vide from experts an educa-

    tion in financial matters.

    Further, a parental boost of

    opening and funding a long-

    term savings or investment

account would be a wisechoice in exposing their chil-

    dren to the nuances of

    money matters, removing the

    fears, mystique, and shroud

    of darkness surrounding the

subject of money. The days ofopening a passbook savings

account for the kids as their

    entire financial education

has gone the way of the

    dinosaur. Mutual funds,

    ETFs, individual stocks and

    bonds, life insurance and

    annuities, property and casu-

    alty insurance, and personal

    and employer-related retire-

ment plans must be a part of

the curriculum at a mini-mum. Investment strategies

such as buy and hold, dollar

    cost averaging, the Rules of

72 and 115, and the Trinity

    Method of Investing must

    also be included. Developing

    good habits of living below

    one's means and Dont buy

it unless you can pay for it

are rules that should be mem-

    orized like times tables in

elementary school. As important as it is to

grow a portfolio, it is also

    imperative to learn how to

protect a portfolio from all of

    the negative forces in life

that can compromise it. Oneday your childs portfolio may

    well become his major source

    of income during his retire-

    ment years.

    I advise my clients that

to lend money to your adult

kids is really a gift and to

    expect its repayment would

    be unwise. Though we teach

    them to replenish the well

from which they drink so it

will have the ability to bringforth life-saving revenue

    once again, it usually goes

    unheeded. There are always

    exceptions, but my experi-

    ence has taught me pragma-

    tism.

    Yes, an education is one

    way of providing. Helping

    them with the down pay-

ment for their first home pur-

    chase is another. Sharing

your morays and feelingsabout money is a form of pro-

    viding, as is providing sound

    financial advice. Receiving a

    big inheritance or a lawsuit

    settlement are others.

    However, to leave a large

lump sum at your demise is

    hollow and without meaning

    unless accompanied by a plan

    to protect, preserve, and per-

    petuate it for themselves,

    your grandchildren, and

    beyond.Each of us as individuals

    has ideas and thoughts about

    providing for ourselves and

    our spouses or life partners

once we stop earning a pay-

    check. We think about leav-

    ing our kids an inheritance

    but not an entitlement, and

    if there are grandchildren, a

    lot of grandparents desire to

provide for them in some way

as well. If there were onlymore funds to go around

you can imagine I hear this

    Maybe you're close to

    losing it! What the

    heck are we talking

    about? Diamonds! Every year,

thousands of people lose dia-monds, big and small, from

    their settings. Why? Because

over time the gold or platinum

    that holds the stones wears

    away. It's a fact:

    If you're wear-

    ing it, then

    you're wearing

    it slowly away.

    We find that

    the average life

of a prong isabout 10 years.

    Jewelry items

    such as neck-

    laces and ear-

    rings usually don't get the

    abuse a ring or bracelet

    receives, so prongs on these

    pieces tend to last much

    longer. Sometimes prongs

    aren't worn, but have been

bent, which also can give a

    stone an opportunity to fallout.

    So what can you do

about it? Well, if you haven't

lost it yet, you should make it

a point to go every so often to

    whatever jeweler it is you

trust. Ask the jeweler to check

the integrity of your prongsand the tightness of your

    stones. Most jewelers do this

as a courtesy to their clients

and never charge for this serv-

ice. If you don't have a

favorite jeweler or yours is too

far away, we would be happy

to check your jewelry for you

    no charge!

What if there is a prob-

lem? The usual fixes and costs

are: repair a bent prong ($10or less), retip a worn prong

    (between $12-$20 per prong),

    T

    he dental and medical

    community is viewing

oral health as a majorpillar of overall health.

    Having a healthy mouth is

    becoming even more impor-

tant to everyone. Here are just

a few statistics that suggest a

    strong correlation between

    oral and systematic (body)

    health.

    Research at a recent

    American Heart Association

meeting said as few as two

dental cleanings per year canreduce a persons risk of heart

    attack by 25 percent.

    Dental sleep therapy can

    help the 20 million people

    who suffer from obstructive

sleep apnea. They are at a

    greater risk for cardiovascular

    disease. Effective treatment of

    sleep apnea patients can add

    ten years to their lives.

    Appropriate periodontal

(gum) treatment is effectivein lowering the A1C levels in

    diabetic patients as most med-

    ications, but without adverse

side effects. (A1C level is a

    three-month average of the

    blood sugar level).Oral inflammation re-

    duction in diabetic patients

    can reduce the yearly health

care costs by up to 25 percent.

    Studies show that Lp-PLA2

levels can be lowered by oral

    inflammation reduction. (Lp-

PLA2 is an enzyme related to

    cardiovascular disease, con-

    gestive heart disease, andstroke.)

    Oral bio-film-associated

    disease surpassed heart disease

in total cost of health care.

    Bacteria live in a bio-film.

These bio-films cause morethan 75 percent of all bacteri-

    al infections in humans. Oral

    bio-films are associated with

    almost all oral infections,

    including cavities.

    Inflammatory by prod-

ucts similar to those in the

    mouth have been implicated

    in osteoarthritis.

This new informationwill be changing dentistry.

The dentist will be more than

he has ever been before, being

able to screen or even prevent

    medical problems. A total

    wellness exam, dental exam,

    microbial assessment, genetic

    testing, saliva diagnostics, and

    health assessment may be the

norm with dental visits in the

    future.

    The next part in this

series will describe currentand future medical testing

that dentists will be able to

    perform.

    Two local eighth-

    graders, Herbie Zieger

    of Lincoln Park and

    David Luppino of Wayne, were

    awarded the New Jersey

    Governor's Jefferson Award for

    outstanding service to youth in

a ceremony held May 12 at the

    Newark Museum.

    The challenge celebrates

    New Jerseys next generation of

    community leaders and volun-

    teer service organizers. The

    Jefferson Awards program was

    founded in 1972 by Jacqueline

    Kennedy Onassis, Sen. Robert

Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard, as the

    Nobel Prize for public service.

    The awards were present-

    ed by Rowena Madden, direc-

tor of the New Jersey gover-

    nor's office on volunteerism

    and Karen Hatcher, director of

    Students in Action. The

    eighth-graders from Holy Spirit

School in Pequannock wererecognized for their project,

    For Bella: One Child, One

    Voice.

    The story of Bella

    Benetatos struggle with Rett

    Syndrome, which aired recent-

ly on the CBS local news,

    affected the teenagers. Bella

was in need of a $20,000 eye

    gaze computer called the

MyTobii. The computerenables people who cannot

    communicate to look at images

on the computer and then it

speaks the words for them. Rett

    Syndrome, a rare, incurable,

    and physically-disabling neuro-

    logical disorder, has left Bella

unable to speak or learn sign

    language because it has also

    taken her hand use.

    The teens wanted to help

give the 8-year-old girl achance to speak. Herbie and

David raised $620 of the total

    needed for the computer by

    holding an Easter basket raffle.

    This fund-raiser helped Bellas

family reach its goal and also

    helped to raise awareness of

    this rare syndrome.

    Bella and her family met

Herbie and David for the first

    time at the award ceremony.

    Bella hugged the teens and

    immediately seemed to sense

    their connection. Bellas mom

    agreed.

    Your sons are amazing!

    Bella loved them too, shesaid.

    Plans are underway for

Bella to visit the boys at Holy

    Spirit School when she

    receives the MyTobii. The

    students will be afforded the

    opportunity to see and hear

    her speak first-hand through

    the use of the computer.

    The mission of the

    Jefferson Awards is to recog-

nize, inspire, and activate vol-unteerism and public service

    in communities, workplaces

    and schools across America.

    The Pompton Plains and

    We continually

    hear and read

    reports on the

    escalating cost of higher edu-

    cation. However, two tax

    credits are available to pro-

    vide some relief for taxpayers

    who are paying these educa-

    tion costs for themselves

    or family members. The

    American Opportunity Tax

    Credit and Lifetime Learning

    Credit are available in 2012

    to help students and parents

cover the cost of higher edu-

    cation. Taxpayers will gener-

    ally use the American

    Opportunity Tax Credit, as

    opposed to the Lifetime

    Learning Credit, since it will

    yield a greater monetary ben-

    efit.

    The American Oppor-

tunity Tax Credit is a per stu-

    dent credit that may be

    claimed for each eligible stu-

    dent pursuing an undergradu-

    ate degree or other recog-

    nized education credential.

    The student must be enrolled

at least half-time for one aca-

    demic period to qualify for

    the credit.

    The maximum

    American Opportunity Tax

    Credit is $2,500 per student

in 2012 based on 100 percent

of the first $2,000 and 25

percent of the next $2,000 of

    the qualified tuition and

    related expenses paid during

    the tax year for education

    furnished to an eligible stu-

    dent. Qualified expenses

    include tuition and fees and

    course-related books, sup-

    plies, and equipment. Forty

    percent of the credit is

    refundable, which means

that you may be able to

receive up to $1,000 even if

you owe no taxes. This cred-

it does phase out, but is gen-

    erally available to eligible

    taxpayers whose modified

    adjusted gross income is less

    than $80,000 or $160,000 for

    married couples filing a joint

    return.

    Unlike the American

    Opportunity Tax Credit, the

    Lifetime Learning Credit is a

    per taxpayer (per return)

credit, rather than a per stu-

dent credit. It is available for

    all years of post-secondary

    education, including gradu-

ate level degree work, and for

    courses to acquire or improve

    job skills (e.g. work-related

    community college courses).

The student does not have to

be pursuing a degree or other

    recognized education creden-

    tial to obtain the credit.

    For 2012, the maximum

    Lifetime Learning Credit

    allowed is $2,000 (20 percent

of up to $10,000 of the aggre-

    gate qualified tuition and

    related expenses paid during

    the tax year for education

    furnished to an eligible stu-

    dent during any academic

    period). Qualified expenses

    include tuition and fees and

    course-related books, sup-

    plies, and equipment, but

only if required by the eligi-

    ble education institution for

    enrollment. The maximum

credit is limited to the tax

you must pay on your return-

    the credit is nonrefundable.

    (Special rules apply for

    AMT.) This credit does

phase out, but the full credit

    is generally available to eligi-

    ble taxpayers whose modified

    adjusted gross income is less

    than $52,000 or $104,000 for

    married couples filing a joint

    return in 2012.

    Although several of the

    rules and requirements are the

    same for both education cred-

    its, taxpayers can elect to

claim only one of these credits

for the same student in a tax

    year. However, this does not

    prevent a taxpayer from

    claiming a different credit (or

    the same credit) for different

students in the same tax year.

    If youre reading this, you

    know how important

    exercise is.

    However, there are right

ways to exercise and there are

wrong ways. In order to get

    the greatest benefit from your

    workout and prevent possible

injury, youve got to do it the

right way. What is the right

way? You're about to find out.

    No pain, no gain

    You've heard the phrase

No pain, no gain. But this

    isn't exactly true for exercise.

    Actually, exercising doesn't

have to cause pain in order to

    get you in shape.

    If you are just begin-

    ning to exercise, a little

    muscle soreness is to be

    expected. But don't give

    up. Work through

    it; stick with your

    exercise routine,

    and in few days

    the soreness

    should be gone

    for good.

    If you ever do

    experience severe

    pain while

    exercising,

    stop until

    it goes

    away. If it

    lasts for more

    than a few days, see

    your doctor.

    Three parts

    What does a balanced

exercise plan look like to you?

    Is walking 30 minutes four

    days a week enough?

    Lifting weights four

times a week? In a word, no.

    There are actually three

    components of a balanced

    workout routine: aerobic,

    strength-training, and flexi-

    bility exercises.

    Aerobic or cardio exer-

    cises strengthen your lungs

    and heart. Examples include

    running, walking, swimming,

    cycling, and basketball.

    Strength or resistance

    training exercises keep

    your bones and mus-

    cles strong and

    help with coordin-

    ation and balance.

    Strength training

    refers to weight

    lifting, weight

    m a c h i n e s ,

    resistance

    bands, and

    body-weight exercises.

The third part of a bal-

    anced exercise routine

    includes flexibility exercises

to reduce your risk of injury

    and improve your bodys range

    of motion. Examples include

    stretching, yoga, and tai chi.

    It doesnt matter in what

    order you perform your aero-

    bic and strength-training

    exercises, unless you have spe-

    cific goals. Working on

    endurance? Go cardio first.

Trying to get stronger or burn

    calories? Hit the weights first.

Just be sure to incorporate all

    three types of exercise each

    week.

    Warm up and cool down

    If you don't warm up

before or cool down after exer-

    cising you could harm your

    muscles.

The best way to get your

    muscles ready for exercising is

to include a brief time of light

    aerobics, such as brisk walking

or steady cycling to get your

    breathing and heart rate

    slightly elevated.

    To cool down, continue

exercising at a slower pace or

    lower level of intensity for

    about five to 10 minutes.

Then end with a few gentle

    stretches to loosen your mus-

    cles, ligaments, and tendons.

    A cool-down period will help

    your muscles recover and help

    prevent injury or soreness.

    The easiest and most

    effective way to ensure that

your workout plan is smart is

to put it into the hands of a

    trusted expert me.

If you notice a mole on

    your skin, follow the ABCD

    rule for melanoma:

    Asymmetry: one half

    does not match the other.

    Border Irregularity: the edges

    are ragged or notched.

    Color: the pigment is not

    uniform; shades of tan,

    brown or black are present.

    Diameter: the width is more

    than six millimeters, about

the size of a pencil eraser.

    A mole that has

increased in size, a new mole,

or a mole that is different or

    ugly requires prompt med-

    ical attention. Prevention

    and early detection are key.

In order to prevent AK's and

    skin cancer, you should fol-

    low these three steps:

    1.Wear sunscreen of at least

    SPF 15, wear protective

    clothing, and avoid the sun

    between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

    2.Perform periodic self-

    examinations.

    3.See your dermatologist

    immediately if you suspect

    skin cancer.

    facts

Cancer, or to arrange a free

    skin cancer screening with

    Dr. Kassir.

Dr. Kassir is a triple board cer-

    tified facial plastic surgeon,

    defects resulting from skin

    cancer excisions. He practices

    with his brother, Martin Kas-

    sir, M.D., a board certified

    dermatologist.

    O

    dds are during your

    daily scratching and

    petting session with

your dog or cat there will come

a time when you find a lump or

    bump. Don't panic! Fido isn't

dying, but he does need to take

    a trip to the veterinarian.

As they age, dogs and cats,

    like people, will develop warts

    and masses. The most common

time of life for tumors to begin

to form is middle age, around 5

years and older. Not all tumors

    mean your pet has cancer.

    Any animal, from the

very young to the very old, can

    develop a skin or subcutaneous

    growth. Many tumors are

    benign. Benign tumors do not

spread to other organs or tis-

    sues. Sometimes benign tumors

    need to be removed because

    they impinge on surrounding

    structures, thereby causing

    problems. Also, if they might

    break open and cause infection,

    they need to be removed.

    If you find a mass

(growth) on your pet, ask your

    veterinarian to examine it.

    Your veterinarian will aspirate

the mass, which means using a

needle to collect a sample of

the cells inside, or suggest a

    biopsy where a larger tissue

sample is taken. Cats are less

prone than dogs are to develop-

    ing skin and subcutaneous

tumors, but both types of pets

will need veterinary care for a

    growth.

    Many dogs get lipomas as

they age. A lipoma is a benign

fatty tumor that feels like a soft

mass. It is common in older

    animals. When we aspirate it,

we just see fat. No treatment is

    necessary unless it is causing

    problems for neighboring areas.

    Lipomas are typically suspected

    by your veterinarian feeling

    them, but some more serious

    malignant tumors can feel sim-

    ilar and therefore a lipoma

    should only be diagnosed by

taking a sample of the lump

with a needle aspirate or biopsy.

    Unfortunately, some

    tumors are malignant, or can-

    cerous. If your vet-

    erinarian thinks a

    mass may be malig-

    nant, more diagnos-

    tic tests need to be

    done. These tumors

    can and usually do

    spread to other

    organs, causing

    problems through-

    out the body.

    Where a tumor will

spread depends on the type of

    tumor.

    Treatment for these

    malignant tumors is usually sur-

gical removal and can be fol-

    lowed by either chemotherapy

    or radiation, depending on the

    tumor type. Radiation therapy

    is recommended when not all

of the tumor can be removed

    surgically. Chemotherapy is

used when there is a high risk

that the tumor will spread to

    other parts of the body.

    When you notice a lump

or bump on your pet, it is best

to have a veterinarian look at it

soon. Many pets have lumps all

    their lives that remain benign,

but if a lump is malignant, your

pet has a better prognosis if

    treated early.

    17/32

    In an era of over-the-top,

    ultra-expensive birthday

    parties whose extrava-

    gance rivals lavish weddings,

    some might find it invigorat-

ing to scale things down and

    host a pool party.

A pool party is an ideal

way to host a birthday or

    other special event without

having to do a lot of plan-

    ning. All that is typically

    needed is an available pool

    and party participants ready

    to have a good time.

    Many people mistakenly

think that a pool party is

    something that can only be

    done during the warm weath-

er. Actually, you can plan a

pool party any time of the

    year. Many fitness gyms,

    schools and scuba certifica-

    tion locations open their

    pools up to public parties.

    Therefore, whether the event

is held in June or January,

chances are there is a pool

    available that can accommo-

    date the crowd.

    One main advantage to

a pool party is that the pool is

    the entertainment factor for

the guests. There's no need to

    spend hours thinking up

    games or other forms of

    entertainment. Swimming,

    splashing and jumping into

    the water will keep many

    guests occupied for hours. If

    you prefer more structure,

    consider relay races, diving

    games and water volleyball.

    Party preparation

    Start with the invita-

    tions when preparing the

    party. Select a colored paper

    or pattern that is reminiscent

    of pool water. A vibrant

    aquamarine would fit the bill.

Print out a catchy phrase that

    describes the upcoming event

    (i.e., Jimmy's Party is Bound

to be a Splash), and be sure to

    remind guests to bring towels

and bathing suits. If you will

not have enough chairs for all

guests, ask them on the invite

to bring a beach chair as well.

    Put together a selection of

    music that evokes summer

    fun or tropical locations.

There are bound to be compi-

    lation playlists available for

    purchase. An instrumental

    steel drum album also would

    be effective. Remember, this

    pool party should look and

feel hot. Music will help set

    that mood.

    Tie decorations into the

    theme. Purchase or rent

    inflatable palm trees and

    string lantern lights around

    the party area, if possible.

Keep plenty of beach balls on

hand to toss around in or out

of the water. Table linens can

    be purchased in bright hues

to match the blue, red and

yellow strips of a beach ball.

Be sure to have plenty of fun

    pool toys available, such as

floats and water guns. Have a

few extra pairs of eye goggles

on hand as well as sun block

(if the party is outdoors) in

    case swimmers forgot their

    own.

    Pool party food

    Think about which

foods to serve at a pool party.

    Light, finger foods are ideal

    because they won't sit heavi-

    ly in guests' stomachs. Think

    about tea sandwiches, fruit

    Leading the summer

    blockbusters this year is

    Disney and Marvels

    latest project, the box office

    hit The Avengers, which

    brings many of your favorite

    superheroes together for the

first time on the big screen.

    Join the Avengers Initiative

    with Captain America, Iron

Man, Thor, the IncredibleHulk, Black Widow, and

    Hawkeye, under the leader-

ship of Nick Fury, as they take

on the demigod Loki in an

epic battle for the salvation of

    humanity.

    Fans who have seen the

    superheroes in their prior

films and stayed for the end

    credits will recall each hero

    being approached by a myste-

rious man identified as NickFury (Samuel L. Jackson)

    with an opportunity called

    the Avengers Initiative. The

    Avengers is the long awaited

    assembly of this team. After

    Loki crosses realms and

arrives on Earth, he plans a

    devious plot to enslave

mankind in an act of revenge

    on his brother, Thor. When

    Loki begins taking humans

captive to open a portal to theother realms to summon his

    army, Fury assembles the

    recruited Avengers. Not used

    to working together, the

    Avengers face one of their

    greatest challenges yet: set-

    ting aside their differences

and their pride to become a

    team. Each character faces his

own flaws that he must over-

    come in order for the

Avengers to come togethersuccessfully and defeat Loki in

    order to save the world.

    In addition to Samuel L.

Jackson, the all-star cast is led

by Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron

    Man, Chris Evans as Captain

    America, and Scarlett

    Johanssen as Black Widow.

    The Avengers is filled

    with intense action scenes

    from the opening until the

very end. The film is alsoavailable in 3-D, which great-

    ly enhances the special effects

    and provides a more enter-

    taining experience. In addi-

    tion to stunning special

    effects, the film is overall

    clean and family-friendly.

Marvel fans will not be disap-

pointed as the film is not sim-

    ply just superheroes in action,

    but also contains a well-

developed and thought-outplotline. The film does an

    excellent job of bringing four

    different storylines together

    and intertwining them to pro-

    duce a successful and enter-

    taining story that fans will

    greatly enjoy.

    Filled with suspense,

    action, and humor, The

    Avengers provides an enter-

    taining movie experience for

audiences of all ages. Afterseeing the film, one can clear-

ly understand why it is break-

    ing box office records. Dont

forget to stay for the end cred-

its for two extra scenes. For an

    even better experience and

more action, see the film in

Imax 3-D; it is well worth it!

    The Avengers is rated

    PG-13 for intense sequences

of action and is now playing

    in theaters everywhere.

    Burger DeLuxe in

    Wayne is far from your

    average burger joint.

    Although branding says

burger, the menu is full of

    heavenly manifestations in

    the form of specialty entrees,

    homemade appetizers, and

knee-weakening desserts.I need to preface this

review by telling you that I

just came back from a four-

    month stint in Scotland,

where ... well, lets just say

the food variety is subpar. As

    a self-acclaimed foodie and

    recovering glutton, a country

    with restaurants that serve

    half portions and then charge

double does not jive well for

me. Since Ive been back inthe States I have been on a

    rampage, absolutely gorging

myself with all the best foods

in the area. When we were

    contacted by Zeki Yesilyurt

at Burger DeLuxe, I was all

too happy to try it out.

    Zeki started off by bring-

ing us some of his homemade

appetizers, stressing that themajority of the food served is

    homemade. He placed a large

bowl full of loaded nachos, a

    plate with warm pita neatly

    arranged around a bowl of

some of the best hummus Ive

    tasted, and savory spinach

    pastry pies filled with creamy

    feta. Clearly each dish was

    made from scratch, explod-

    ing with flavor and prepared

with the proper consistency.Additionally, each appetizer

Zeki brought out had a spe-

    cific sauce to complement it.

    Guiltlessly, I dove into the

    nachos, with alternating

bites of the spinach pies and

    pita, almost forgetting that

    there was much more to

    come.

    Burgers are the obvious

    specialty at Burger DeLuxe

    and certainly for good rea-

son. My mind was blown at

    some of Zekis interpretations

    of the hamburger, from the

    French Onion Burger to the

    Salmon Burger, and even the

spicy En Fuego. The second I

    bit into the French Onion

Burger, I knew it was true

    love. A brothy juice poured

from the meat as bits of

    caramelized onions and Swiss

    cheese joined it. The only

    way I could describe my

    experience with this burger

was feeling like I had actual-

    ly bitten into French Onion

    Soup.

    My partner took one

bite of the En Fuego burger,

    with its jalapeos, hab-

    aneros, and pepper jack

    spray and set aside.

In a large skillet heat the oil

    on medium. Add the garlic,

    basil, onion, rosemary, parsley,

    salt and pepper. Cook for

    about 5 minutes, until the

    onions begin to soften.

    Add the ground turkey and

    continue to heat until the

    meat is browned. Add the

tomato and cook for another 2

    minutes.

    Remove from heat. Pour the

    spaghetti sauce into the turkey

mixture and mix well. Add the

    cheese and mix until well

    combined.

    Stuff each prepared bell pep-

    per with the turkey mixture

    and place on prepared baking

    sheet. Cook for 15-20 minutes

    until the bell peppers are-

    tender.

best Ive ever had. But thats

    The dessert menu was

    calling no, shouting my

name. Desserts are hit or miss

    at any restaurant. Some have

a long list but nothing excit-

    ing, while others have only

one or two available. Thislist had both the quantity

    and quality sweet-tooths

    crave, including fried Oreos

    and cheesecake, a Toll House

    cookie sundae, a wide variety

    of specialty cupcakes

    (including cookie dough,

    which I inhaled in seconds),

    and of course, milkshakes.
