The gas contents of BOC cylinders are identified by the labelsaffixed to the shoulder of the cylinders. A cylinder without a labelshould not be used but returned to the supplier. An important

part of that label is the class diamond, which represents thecharacteristic of the gas, as illustrated. A label with multiple

class diamonds indicates multiple associated hazards.

    Air Based Gases

    Applications Features Benefits

    Brazing and hard soldering

Can be used in alternativeapplications suchas plasma-cutting

Used in metallurgical processessuch as die-casting and blastfurnaces

    Compressed air cylinders are an

alternative to a compressorUsed to drive pneumatic drills

    Odourless, colourless andnon-toxic

    Does not burn but supportscombustion

When it is combined with afuel gas, produces a flame witha lower temperature than anoxy-fuel flame

The air-fuel flame is suitablefor brazing and solderingapplications with lowertemperature alloys

Can be used in the carboncoating processes. An air-acetylene flame is used toproduce carbon which can bedeposited onto the surface of acomponent to act as a releaseagent. Carbon coating is usedfor aluminium extrusion andglass manufacture as a mould-release agent.

Used in preference to oxygenfor carbon coating becauseit gives a greater level ofadjustment, thereby allowing thethickness of the carbon coat tobe varied

Can be used to dry telephonecables or to prevent moisture

    Air Based Gases

    Applications Features Benefits

Widely used with a fuel gas for

cutting, welding, brazing andsoldering. The use of oxygengives higher flame temperaturesthan if air is used.

    BOC oxygen is typically supplied

with a purity of 99.5% or higher

    Vigorously supports combustion.

Introducing oxygen toconventional air-fuel flamesincreases the temperature ofthe flame.

In oxy-cutting, an oxy-fuel flamepreheats the steel to its ignitiontemperature. A jet of gaseousoxygen flows onto the red hotsteel, generating more heat andmelting the steel. The steel incontact with the oxygen jet isoxidised, creating metallic slagwhich is blown from the cut,

allowing more steel to reactwith the oxygen.

In plasma and laser cutting steel,an arc or a laser beam is usedto heat the steel to its ignitiontemperature. Oxygen is thenused in the same way as withoxygen cutting to create anexothermic reaction and toblow away any metal oxide orslag

Thermal lancing oxygen isused in conjunction with the

steel lance to create a hightemperature melting processcapable of drilling or cuttingthrough materials such asconcrete, brick, stone and mostmetals

High purity oxygen is used inlaboratories, process controloperations, metal analysisinstruments and in semi-conductor production

Used as an assist gas in lasersfor cutting mild steel

    Colourless and odourless

Does not burn, but supportsand accelerates combustion

Oil, greases and solvents reactviolently with oxygen and metalsmay burn. Never use oil orgrease to lubricate oxygen oroxygen equipment, as they canspontaneously combust withexplosive force.

Oxygen must never be usedwith Polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) tape, as it will causecombustion. Standard PTFE tapecontains oil-based hydrocarbons.BOC does not recommendthe use of PTFE or otherthread sealing componentsin conjunction with any gascylinder valves or regulators.

When using oxygen, it isimportant to be aware of thehazards associated with anoxygen-enriched or -deficientenvironment

    Non-toxic at atmosphericpressure

Used as an ingredient in someshielding gas mixtures, due to itsability to help stabilise the arcand reduce surface tension

When cutting, a 1% reductionin purity increases oxygenconsumption by 25% andreduces the cutting speed by asimilar amount

    3 Industrial Gases

    50 NZ : IPRM 2007 : SECTION 3 : INDUSTRIAL GASES

    Fabrication Gases

    Applications Features Benefits

All the major applicationsof argon are related to theproduction, processing andfabrication of metals. The roleof argon is nearly always toexclude atmospheric air fromcontact with metal alloys. Anexample of this is as a purginggas to protect weld areas, such

as the inside of pipes duringwelding.

The predominant gas used inshielding gases, because it formsa very good shield due to thehigh density and total inertness

    Colourless, tasteless andodourless

Inert to all materials at alltemperatures and pressures

Heavier than air, argon willcollect in low-lying areas, ductsand drains

    An asphyxiant

Argon produced by BOC has aminimum purity level of 99.995% ideal for welding applications

Used on a wide range of ferrousand non-ferrous materials forwelding and cutting

Major component in mostshielding gas mixtures for arcwelding and cutting due to low

    ionising potential

The low ionising potentialallows easy forming of a weldingarc without reacting with themetal components being welded

Shielding gas for MIG and TIGwelding processes and forplasma cutting. Argon is usedalone or mixed with other gasessuch as helium, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen or hydrogen. Each mixture is often specificto welding a particular materialor to a particular process. Forexample, argon is used as ashielding gas for TIG weldingaluminium, titanium and copper.

When welding thicker materials, other gases are added to theargon base to produce a morefluid weld pool

    51NZ : IPRM 2007 : SECTION 3 : INDUSTRIAL GASES

    Fabrication Gases

    Applications Features Benefits

When MIG welding ferrousmaterials, pure argon is not anideal shielding gas, as it producesan arc with poor cathodicrooting characteristics, largedroplet size and thereforehigher levels of spatter. Forthis reason, BOC recommendsthat Argoshield or Stainshieldgases be used, depending on thethickness and type of materialbeing welded.

When welding thicker materialwith argon, it is importantto take care to ensure thatproblems with fusion andporosity do not occur

Fills the inter-space in doubleglazed windows

Lower thermal conductivity thanmost other gases

Low thermal conductivity actsas an insulator and will nottransfer heat efficiently

    Fuel Gases

    Dissolved Acetylene (C2H2)Applications Features Benefits

The only fuel gas that can beused to weld steel

Flame hardening an oxy-acetylene flame can be usedwhere the hardened surfaceof carbon steel componentsis either in situ as a remedialprocess or on components toolarge to fit in a furnace

Flame cleaning a wide oxy-acetylene flame is held veryclose to a steel surface to becleaned

Thermal spraying of variousmetals and ceramics. Thematerial to be sprayed is fedthrough the flame.

Distinctive garlic-like smell, which is recognisable above 2%concentrations in the air

    May cause dizziness in highconcentrations

Low auto-ignition temperature requires minimal energy toignite in air or oxygen

Can react over time withsome metals to form explosiveacetylides

The hottest and most efficientof all fuel gases

Oxygen and acetylene togetherproduce a flame temperature ofapproximately 3150C

    Spot-heating applications

    Brazing

    Texturing

    Profile cuttingBranding pallets

    Wood-ageing

The oxy-acetylene flame givesvery good localised heating

In cutting, oxy-acetylene givesthe fastest preheating and

piercing times of any fuel gascombination

In oxy-acetylene cuttingprocesses, improved cut quality, higher cutting speed, faster cutinitiation time and reducedoxygen use are achieved

    Glass and metal castings

Mould release and other anti-stick applications

When used with either oxygenor air, acetylene can producea thin layer of black carbonparticles. This can preventcomponents sticking in theirmoulds.

    Laser Gases

Most industrial lasers need gases both to generate the laser light(lasing gases) and to assist in the process, be it cutting or welding(assist gases). All BOC laser gases are produced at ISO 9001accredited facilities and are designed to meet and exceed thespecifications of laser manufacturers.

Whether you have a CO2, Nd:YAG, exicimer or diode laser, gasesof the correct quality are important not only to maintain the lasersreliability but also to ensure the highest process productivity.

The BOC range of laser gases have been specifically designed inconjunction with laser manufacturers to minimise laser down timeand to achieve optimum process performance.
