GOSPEL MEDITATION - October 7, 2018

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We're reminded of the in-nocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typi-cally has in front of children. Yet here we are.

Jesus' response goes further back then the Mosaic law. "From the beginning, God made them male and female ... the two shall become one flesh ... what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve pos-sessed original innocence. How eager they were to en-counter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We're quick to find a way around difficult moments.

In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objection-able. Jesus recognizes this in today's Gospel. His invi-tation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today -- now! -- by grace. Indeed, "the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE

If then My people, upon whom my name

has been pronounced, humble themselves

and pray, and seek my face and turn from

their evil ways, I will hear them from

heaven and pardon their sins and heal

their land. — 2 C!"#$%&'() 7:14

Not unlike God’s chosen people of Isra-

el, we must humble ourselves, pray, seek His

face, and turn from our wicked ways, if we ex-

pect God to hear from heaven, forgive our sin,

and heal our land. The need for repentance has

not been greater since the Supreme Court de-

cision of Roe v. Wade in 1973.

The number one cause of death in

America is the needless sacrifice of our

children at the altar of convenience called

abortion. Conservative estimates put the num-

ber of deaths at nearly 48 million.

And lest we think this is an issue

outside the church walls, 43 percent of women

obtaining abortions identify themselves as

Protestant, and 27 percent identify themselves

as Catholic.

“We (the church) have been an

unintentional accomplice to the millions of lives

lost and to the multiplied millions of lives dev-

astated by abortion. We didn’t want them to

abort. We didn’t mean for them to abort.

But, because of our lack of knowledge, because

of our fear, we have continued to stand by and

do nothing. We, God’s hands and feet in this

dark and hurting world, have been uninten-

tional, unknowledgeable accomplice, but an ac-

complice nonetheless.”

Heavenly Father, we cry out for Your mercy

DID YOU KNOW? Published 10/01/2018

It is important to communicate your con-cerns if you observe anyone interacting with a child in an inappropriate man-ner. Parents, family members, teachers, clergy and all who work with or are respon-sible for the care of children need to re-member that speaking up is one of the most important things they can do to pro-tect not just their own children, but all chil-dren. Voicing your concerns is critical to protecting God’s children. Any incident of abuse or misconduct should be immediate-ly reported

¿SABIA USTED? Publicado 10/01/ 2018

Magnificat, invites you to its quarterly Prayer Breakfast. Guest inspirational speaker will be Father Larry Gosselin, a Franciscan friar and priest, who has served the poor and disenfranchised in the north and southwest.

SAINT DENIS AND

COMPANIONS’ STORY

This martyr and patron of France is regarded as the first bishop of Paris. His popularity is due to a series of legends, es-pecially those connecting him

with the great abbey church of St. Denis in Paris. He was for a time confused with the writer now called Pseu-do-Dionysius.

The best hypothesis contends that Denis was sent to Gaul from Rome in the third century and beheaded in the persecution under Emperor Valerius in 258.

According to one of the legends, after he was martyred on Montmartre—literally, “mountain of martyrs”—in Par-is, he carried his head to a village northeast of the city. Saint Genevieve built a basilica over his tomb at the be-ginning of the sixth century.

REFLECTION

Again, we have the case of a saint about whom almost nothing is known, yet one whose cult has been a vigor-ous part of the Church’s history for centuries. We can only conclude that the deep impression the saint made on the people of his day reflected a life of unusual holi-ness. In all such cases, there are two fundamental facts: A great man gave his life for Christ, and the Church has never forgotten him—a human symbol of God’s eternal mindfulness.

Source: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-denis-and-companions/

And a devotion to the Eucharist that is ardent, constant and that carries over into works also has the effect of nourishing and fostering the inner perfection of his soul and assuring him, as he carries out his apostolic duties, of an abundance of the supernatural powers that the strongest workers for Christ must have.

—John XXIII. Paenitentiam Agere. 1962
