SEABROOK YEAR LEVEL EXHIBITIONS Our Year 6 students and their mentors are steaming ahead in preparation for their up-coming PYP exhibition. Much research is taking place and some students are planning excursions and inviting visitors to help learn more about concepts relating to their investigations into science and technology under the transdisciplinary the of How the World Works. The exhibition, for our year 6 students is a culmination of their learning throughout their years at a PYP school. The exhibition requires that each student demonstrates engagement with the five essential elements of the programme: knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action. It synthesizes the essential elements of the PYP and allows each child to share their understandings with whole school community. We look forward to their exhibition which is held in the week of September 16. Everyone is welcome to attend. To gain experience in researching and presenting other year levels hold mini-exhibitions across the year. Our year 5 students will welcome parents and visitors from within the school community to their Science Fair being held next Friday 30th August.Have a great week ahead.

Wednesday 18 September 6:30pm - 8pm

This year’s Transdisciplinary Theme for Exhibition is How the world works. The Year 6 students are currently sorting out their information and answering their student questions based on their central idea and lines of inquiry. They have spent the past few weeks tuning in (getting excited, deciding on

a topic that interests them) and finding out (about their lines of inquiry and student questions). Students have been using their research skills to further enhance their understanding. Next week students will be looking at how they can take action/how they have already taken action. They will also be

creating their artefacts and provocations. Students are becoming very excited about sharing their knowledge and are really looking forward to presenting their work to the school community. Exciting times ahead!

District Athletics

Congratulations to about 70 students who competed on Monday at the Laverton District Athletics Carnival at Newport Park. It was a bit breezy, but mainly sunny during most of the events. The last couple of 800m races copped some showers of rain, which wasn’t fun for those runners, but our students showed their resilience and dedication to push through it and still achieve great results.

At this point, I believe we have about 44 students who have qualified for the Divisional level at the Hoppers Crossing track on the 12th of September. We still have some students competing in 1500m at Altona Green tomorrow. Good luck to them.

These are the students who have qualified so far by either coming 1st or 2nd overall in that event:

Isabella (6JB - HJ), Sarah (6JB – High Jump & 800m), Phoenix (6JJ – Long Jump, 800m & Relay), Rinad (6JB – Shot Put), Verity (6LL – Discus), Olivia (6JB – Discus), Ella (6AA – Relay), Aliyah (6JB – Relay), Meika (6SF – Relay), Saoirse (5RB – 200m & 800m), Kiara (5GC – High Jump & Long Jump), Emily (5SK – 100m & Relay), Indiana (5CM – Hurdles), Jade (5RB – 800m), Addison (6LL) – Shot Put & Discus), Olivia T (5GC – Shot Put & Discus), Airlea (6JB – Relay), Linara (5CM – Relay) Rachel (5RB – Relay), Sophie (5RB – Relay), Tiana (5RB –

Relay), Olivia E (5GC – Relay), Chiara (4MB – Relay), Liam (6JB – High Jump), Harrison (6LL – Long Jump), Lachlan (6JJ – 800m), Hanry (6SF – Relay), Tyler (6AA - Relay), Max (6AA - Relay), Dean (6SF – Relay), Jared (5HT – 100m, 200m, Long Jump & Relay), Afnan (5GC – 100m, Long Jump, Discus & Relay), Tommy (5RB – 200m & Relay), Harvey (6JB – Hurdles, 800m & Relay), Angus (6SF – Hurdles, 800m & Relay), Arnesh (6SF – 800m), Finley (6LL – Discus), Maksim (4BW – Hurdles), Adam (4CS – 800m), Ezra (4BW – Shot Put & Relay), Ollie (4CS – Triple Jump), Anthony (5HT – Relay), Alex (5SK – Relay) & William (5RB – Relay)

Well done to these students and good luck at the next competition. Other children who competed and may have won a heat or perhaps got 3rd or 4th in a field event were: Zac (6AA), Faris (6JB), Steven (5SK), William K (5RB), Nikola (5RB), Lily (6SF), Venice (5HT), Gurleen (5RB), Levi (4EC), Jack (4EC), Mussa (5SK), Lachlan (3KM), Lucas (4MB), Dimitar (4EE), Fatima (4EE), Catherine (4EC), Veronica (4MB), Hana (4EC), Amalia (4FL), Adelaide (3LF), Freya (4EC), Emma (4BW) & Isabel (4MB). Great effort by everyone and thanks to Mr. Basa, Mrs. Cuthbertson & Ms. Mauric for looking after the students and working on high jump during the day. Thanks to families who came down to support the team or help the teachers on high jump.

1BM

Several weeks ago 1BM were eating lunch and talking about how yummy and different our food was. This discussion led to some students saying they have never eaten sushi. Eren, who has a rich Japanese culture, asked if we could make sushi. We were able to successfully link sushi and pasta to the current weather inquiry. We discussed the northern hemisphere, Karin and Jo told us about Japan and Italy’s weather compared to Australia’s current southern hemisphere’s weather. We had also investigated the water cycle and looked at the water needed for a rice paddy and compared it to a field of wheat.

Students spread the rice on the nori sheets (seaweed), added cucumber, carrot, cheese, avocado, smoked salmon and Japanese mayonnaise, to their liking.

Karin taught us how to say “Itadakimasu” before we eat, a Japanese phrase of thanks (for today’s rice, water, vegetables and salmon).

Last week 1BM made sushi and pasta with our fabulous parent helpers, Karin and Jo

Students were taught how to safely grate cheese onto their spaghetti and learnt how to make a bowl of spaghetti, with or without sauce.

What was said:Eren: It was fun to teach my friends how to make sushi.Chloe: The pasta was very yummy, but the cheese smells like old smelly shoes.Patrick: I’ve never grated before, it was pretty cool.Ethan: The sushi was yummy with the smoked salmon.Jess: I enjoyed making sushi for the first time.Indie: The pasta was really good, I tried some with sauce and some with no sauce.

Finn was a risk taker and tried sushi for the first time and said he kind of liked it.

Victoria was open-minded and tried pasta for the first time, she really enjoyed the pasta with sauce.

1BM would like to thank Karin and Jo (along with Nanna) for shopping, cooking, preparing and teaching us about making and eating sushi and pasta, we are grateful for their time they spend with our class. From 1BM

If any families have old Seabrook uniform items to donate to the school it would be much appreciated.

After a wet and muddy winter we have run out of clothes to change children who fall into mud or puddles. If any families have clothes we have used to change their child could they please wash the clothes and send them back to school.

As well we sometimes give clothes to families in need.

I know some families sell their clothes at the second hand uniform shop which I fully understand, especially owing the expense of uniforms, but if you have any uniforms to donate they will be gratefully accepted. We particularly need larger sizes.

Many thanks to the people who have donated clothes, we have many kind and generous families.

2EP

Two weeks ago the grade 2s enthusiastically participated in their Robotics Incursion to further their knowledge and understanding of the central idea, ‘Scientific creativity may change the way we live.’

Students worked together to construct futuristic vehicles using a range of materials. Next they attached motors and created codes to enable their vehicles to move.

Students in 2EP used a PMI to reflect on their learning:

Plus • We were creative with our designs• I had fun coding• Using the control to drive the vehicle• Helping other people when they had trouble• Finding parts• Looking at everyone else’s designs• Our ideas were fun• We learnt more about vehicles• Motorising my robot

Minus• Some of the pieces fell off as we were building• It was tricky to build the robot• When we had problems with the motors• Getting the wheels and axels on

Interesting• Learning about robots• Watching other vehicles being made• Using lots of different types of pieces• Getting the robots to turn• Learning about motors• Making the vehicle turn in a circle• Robots can be used as a vehicle or as an object

Science in the police force On the 16th of August 2019, Breannan Harris, a Forensic’s Officer in the Fingerprint Department of Victoria Police, came to our school to explain to the Year 5’s about how to find fingerprints and the different types of energy used in the Forensics Department, like chemical, kinetic and thermal energy.

I was chosen for an experiment which was finding fingerprints on blank pieces of paper. We used an iron (thermal energy) to find fingerprints on what appeared to be an empty piece of paper. Amber (5GC) and Jade (5RB) conducted other experiments to lift fingerprints using tape and paper.

Breannan then came to 5SK’s classroom to teach us more about science and how scientists work in the Forensics Department. There was a lot of synthesis happening in the room! Breannan extracted a strawberry’s DNA by using dishwashing liquid, a type of special alcohol, cups and a strainer. We then used magnet dust to make our fingerprints visible on a souvenir bookmark. Afterwards, Breannan tried to find fingerprints of children in our class on a window. We are very inspired and grateful for the work Breannan and the Forensics Department do at Victoria Police. By Mussa

On Friday the 16th August the Grade 5’s had a guest speaker, Breannan Harris, who is a Forensics Officer from the Fingerprint Department of Victoria Police. She talked about fingerprints and how she conducts her miraculous job. She explained that she could find out what was written on a piece of paper that had been under the paper that someone has written. Breannan showed us what seemed like a blank piece of paper but then showed us what she had actually found on it – a footprint!! In a crime scene she could identify people’s fingerprints and DNA but could not tell a judge that they definitely did it only that the fingerprints found belonged to a person.

On Thursday 15 August, Brydon and Jenna from Back on Track Fitness Studio in Hoppers Crossing came to give us a presentation about how our bodies use energy from the food we eat. Our lines of inquiry included the different forms of energy and how energy is converted to support humans. 5SK wondered how the food we eat is converted to energy and discovered links between chemical, potential (stored) and kinetic (movement) energy.

We had to figure out what different foods were and how it is made up of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. After we figured out what was healthy and what wasn’t, we completed an activity. I was chosen to wear a heart rate monitor to demonstrate how heart rate increases and decreases during physical activity. The heart rate monitor I was wearing was displayed on the Apple TV using a fitness app.

The demonstration was to walk around slowly at first and my heart rate didn’t really change but then we had to jog on the spot. After about a minute, my heart rate got to 100% in the red zone, so I was puffed out. When your heart rate goes above 90% it means you couldn’t continue to jog for very long because your heart is working really hard. By Jasper 5SK
