PYP EXHIBITION What a fabulous celebration of learning!

The Year 6 children are inquiring into Where we are in Place and time fro their PYP Exhibition, with a focus in two areas:

It is through exploration and discovery, humans have the capacity to establish their identity and create life-changing opportunities.

Relationships between local and global civilisation influence our understanding of other cultures and individuals, allowing us to co-exist.

The children are sharing their understandings relating to these central ideas and have gone to great lengths to represent different civilisations from America, Africa, Europe and Asia. Community members are very welcome to visit the exhibition tonight Wednesday, September 19 from 7pm – 8pm in the north wing.

STAFF NEWS Mrs Sesilia Palu will be leaving Seabrook Primary School on Friday, September 21. Sesilia has obtained a position at Truganina P-9 College and as such will be leaving us. It was a difficult decision for Sesilia, and she will miss her class. We have valued her contribution to our staff and curriculum during her time with us over the past 12 months. We wish her well in her new school. Mr Adam Smith will step in as the grade teacher until the end of the year. For the performing arts role we warmly welcome Ms Melanie Salvado who is returning from family leave.

HATS Hats must be worn outside every day until May next year. The UV rays can be high from September onwards and we all need to protect our skin. Please make sure your child has their hat packed back in their bags ready for the start of term 4.

LEAVING SEABROOK As part of our planning for 2019, we need to know the number of students at each year level. Please let us know if you are leaving Seabrook Primary School. A form is included in the newsletter on the following page 16.

MEDICATIONPlease be advised that if your child is required to take prescribed medication whilst at school a MEDICAL AUTHORITY FORM can be found on our Skoolbag App and the school website. This form should be filled out and signed off by your doctor before we can administer the prescribed medication.

Please Note: wherever possible, medication should be given outside the school hours, e.g if medication is required three times a day it is generally not required to be taken at school: it can be taken before and after school and before bed.

If medication is to be administered at school the medication must be in the original packaging.Should you have any questions/queries, contact the Leadership Team.

CHOCOLATESPlease return any outstanding chocolate boxes or money. There are many boxes still available for purchase should you like more. Please contact the office.

Preps of 2019 Visit

On the 12th of September, our new preps of 2019 and their families visited for a Games and BBQ Evening. It was a beautiful and sunny Melbourne afternoon with the children having lots of fun as they rotated through the games. Parents and guardians also had the opportunity to chat with some of our staff before enjoying the BBQ.

A special thank you to the prep team, staff and parents who supported this transition event to make it a success. Thank you also to our new uniform supplier Noone Imagewear for the freebies on the day and for catching up with parents.

LEARNING WITH CONFIDENCE

On Wednesday the 12th of September 2018, the majority of Grade 5 left our school and our parents behind as we departed for camp. It took approximately an hour to get to Sovereign Hill.

Once we had unloaded our baggage, we were sorted into our activity groups; convicts, migrants, soldiers, miners and settlers. All of 5RB and some girls from 5CM were in our group; the Convicts. The first activity for our group was ‘The Secret Chamber’. It was a story of two Chinese miners who found gold, but were buried alive attempting to retrieve it. After that, we went panning for gold. At around 4pm, we found out who was in our cabins. I was with Jennifer, Evy, Lily, Rihanna, and Addison. The girls stayed in the Steinfeld’s Accommodation, and the boys stayed in the Northern Barracks. We had dinner at the New York Bakery. I sat with Lily, Nhien, Jayden, and Emmanuel. We had fish and chips for dinner.

Next, we went to the Victoria Theatre. We watched two plays until 10pm! We were sent to bed at 10:30pm, but my cabin was unsettled at the start. All my cabin mates showed cooperation by helping each other and we finally fell asleep at 11:20pm.

Day TwoOn day two, our cabin woke up at 6:30am. We had breakfast at the Sovereign Hill Café at 8am. After that, our group went to the Gold Museum to learn about gold. We got to see 1850s clothing, machinery and transport.

Next, we went to an 1850s schoolhouse, where we learnt how hard it was to immigrate to Australia during the gold rush. We also got to dress up in period clothing.

At 12pm, we had lunch. I had a burger, popcorn, and an apple, along with some strawberry milk. Then at 1pm, we went on a tour of the Red Hill Mine. It was dark, and very claustrophobic. There was also a very realistic hologram!

Then we went to see sweet-making demonstration. I got to have a lolly fresh off the roller! Next, we went to a candle dipping demonstration.

At 3pm, we went bowling. After that, we had the Talent Show. We had dinner at the NY Bakery again. This time, we had pasta and chips.

Then we watched a play. The play was called, ‘The Rush for Gold’. It focused on the story of the Eureka Rebellion. After that, we went to bed. This time though, my cabin went to bed at 9:30pm.

Day ThreeOn Friday the 14th, our cabin woke at 7am. We had breakfast at 8, then we went shopping.

For myself, I bought a jar of raspberry drops and a jar of spearmint drops. For my mum and dad, I bought some lollies. For my cousin, I bought a sandalwood fan.

At 12pm, we had lunch. This time, it was pies and sausage rolls! At 12:15pm, we loaded the bus. At 1pm, we departed Sovereign Hill. We arrived back home at 2:30pm. I was very glad to see my parents!

My favourite activity at camp was shopping because I got to buy presents for my beloved family members. An interesting fact I learnt was that children did not need a license to dig for gold. I used the PYP Learner Profile/Attitude of Risk-Taker by facing my fear of the dark and my claustrophobia.

Our camp to Sovereign Hill relates to our central idea because we immigrated to the goldfields just like thousands of other miners from across the world to learn about Australian history.

I enjoyed spending time with my friends at camp, having some time to myself, and learning about the goldfields. It was an awesome camp.

Congratulations Laura D from 6AU for playing the National Anthem for our grade 5/6 Assembly this week. I admired the Courage and Commitment you showed when playing for the whole assembly. You demonstrated you were a Risk-Taker and it was great to see that the grade assembly was able to sing along with you.

Release 10 MacBook 1to1 Update (current parents from Year 2-5)

As you should all be aware by now, Seabrook Primary School are still taking orders for our bulk purchase of MacBook 1 to1 orders (due to take place in early November). To this point however, Apple have not yet released any information on the expected updated Education MacBook. We are still hopeful of an announcement before our bulk order is scheduled to take place, however can’t guarantee anything concrete until we hear from our Certified Education Reseller. We also know that a number of parents are waiting until early next year to place their order because of this expected announcement. If parents choose to change or order their device early next year, this is totally acceptable, however as always, will be subject to an updated quote at time of placing your order. It is only orders for Christmas that we will be placing in early November that we are requiring soon. We will continue to notify parents of any changes (as soon as we hear them) and broadcast them through all the usual online digital channels as per usual.

Library reminder

Our library is missing a large amount of books. Over the holidays could you have a look around your home for Seabrook barcoded books and return them to school during the 1st week of term 4. Thank you

Grade 1 Swimming Program

Just a reminder that this Friday (21st) is last day to be guaranteed a spot in the Grade 1 Swimming Program next term. If there is room after that, then we’ll let teachers know how many are available. The program will be on from Monday 15th October until Monday 19th November (all Mondays). There won’t be any swimming on Monday the 5th of November (as the Pool closes for the Melbourne Cup Weekend). If you would like to be involved, please return the permission forms and the deposit ($23 minimum) to secure your spot. If paying via Qkr, you will still need to return the permission, swimming level & medical information forms by Friday.
