As well, we have some very hard-working parents who work tirelessly on school council, during school and out of hours. They work on fundraising, uniform, buildings and grounds, canteen, grant writing and so on. They help raise funds and organise our playgrounds and equipment, and also co- ordinate activities and processes, apart from organising fun events for the children and run mothers’ and fathers’ day stalls. Many parents help in classrooms, with reading, small group work and on excursions. Others come as guest speakers to share their knowledge and experience in an area of interest helping children make connections in their inquiry. FUNDRAISING AT SEABROOK Our fundraising efforts are key to us keeping the grounds in great order, replacing old furniture and carpet and supplying additional programs in the school. We are very grateful when our community supports our fund raising plans in anyway. Our latest and best fundraising activity is in chocolates sales. This year we introduced an ‘opt out’ method. The thinking behind this is to reduce the burden on families with chocolates they can’t sell or don’t want. It also reduces the waste as less boxes are ordered. In future can we encourage families to use this opt out’ option within the given time frame so handling and money is not wasted? Many parents indicated they would be quite happy to provide a donation in place of taking the box and others come back for more because they are happy to sell them in their work places. Further enhancements around the school happen when we raise these funds. Thanks so much for your support. continued report on the following page

Double parking is never acceptable in any of our car parks and be aware there is no U turn permitted within the drop off zone in Mintaro Way.

2019 PARENT OPINION SURVEY

WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited randomly to participate in this year’s survey. Special access codes will be emailed to those families soon. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22rd July to Sunday 11th August.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10 -15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek.

The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like more information.

Have a great week ahead.Sue & Staff

4MB & 4EE Werribee Open Range Zoo Excursion

On Monday 22nd July, grades 4MB and 4EE went to the Werribee Open Range Zoo to further enhance our understanding of our current inquiry. Our inquiry is all about how living things have adapted to survive. We took part in an educational activity about Predators and Prey in the African Safari.

4BW & 4CS Werribee Open Range Zoo Excursion

4BW and 4CS visited the Werribee Open Range Zoo as part of their inquiry unit ‘ Living things need to adapt in order to survive’. Students enjoyed the whole learning experience and it has further developed their understanding towards

adaptation and why do living things need to adapt ignorer to survive in their environment.

LEARNING WITH CONFIDENCE

I learnt that predators always have eyes in front of their head to judge the distance of a herbivore. I also learnt that prey have eyes on the side of their head to escape from predators. I learnt that meerkats have tiny skulls.I also learnt that a lion’s teeth are very long and sharp.I also learnt that some preys’ skulls are bigger than their enemies skull.

I enjoyed the safari bus ride the most because I saw lots of different animals like rhinos and emus. I also enjoyed playing hide and seek tricky tiggy with Xavier, Youseph, Ezra and Jeremy.

I saw an emu in the safari in a grassland nesting in Rhino poop. The emu’s environment was a grassland, the grassland had plenty of yellow grass because it was so dry. The grassland had lots of streams and trees in it. The grassland also had lots of other animals living in the environment.

By Chetan

On Tuesday the 23rd of July class 4BW and class 4CS went to the Werribee Zoo for an excursion. We went there because it links well with our unit of inquiry “Living things need to adapt in order to survive”.

By Lexi

At the Ranger show, I learned how to identify a predator or a prey (by looking where the eyes of the animals are. If they are at the front that means they are predators. If they have eyes at the back of the skull that means they are prey. It goes like this eyes on the side are born to hide. Eyes on the front are born to hunt). I also learned that animal with jagged and sharp teeth are predators. The thing that I learned and that amazed me was that little creatures like meerkats can be predators, but I also learned that they are also prey for other animals. Animals can be predators because of their superb eyesight.

Things that I enjoyed was that when we went to see the gorillas, a gorilla bashed into the window, where we were watching them. Another thing that I enjoyed was when we got to see the huge pythons in cages.

Next, we saw the monkeys and their habitat, which was full of trees, vines and ropes. Their enclosures were sheltered to protect them if it rains. There were places where they could climb and jump, and they were cared for by the rangers.

I really enjoyed the trip to the Werribee Zoo.

By Sukhraj

Some interesting facts we learnt were:*’eyes on the side were born to hide’, these are herbivore or prey animals.*’eyes on the front were born to hunt’, these are carnivore or omnivore animals.*Gorillas are one of the most similar species to us humans*Meerkats are omnivores*only about 3 species of rhinos still live today.

Some of the things I enjoyed were:* visiting the lions* holding different zoo animal skulls* seeing where the monkeys are cared for and where they sleep.

One environment I enjoyed looking at was the lions’ enclosure. Lions live mostly in Africa and their habitat is mostly grassland. Lions are carnivores, which means they only like to eat meat and flesh, but watch out! Don’t let them eat you!!!

I really enjoyed the excursion and we learnt so much and my favourite animals were the meerkats and giraffes.

Global Citizenship Leadership

#Tap and tell Movement

#TapandTell -The Global Citizenship Group’s initiative to raise awareness and advocate for current global issues by encouraging people to talk about various global issues and spread the message. This means, that while people are spreading important information, they will also be improving their communication skills. We are utilizing the social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as newsletters, pamphlets, posters and websites to encourage people to communicate face to face about global issues. We are also considering to live-stream discussions via Xuno to parents and members of the Seabrook community on either a weekly or fortnightly basis. Below, we have the sub-groups and their chosen global issues, each presented in a short introductory paragraph. Join the #TapandTell initiative and help us spread the word. Sophie, 6AA

Terrorism We are focusing on scenarios that can lead to the formation of terrorist groups and how the issue is still going on. We have decided that we need to take action immediately and share information on this serious problem. This will help spread awareness to those who do not understand what is going on around different countries/places, and how we can help prevent this from happening. #TapandTellRinad and Layelle

Overpopulation We are looking at the topic of overpopulation and how it affects the world. As the world’s population expands, the earth is slowly shrinking. Human population is slowly overtaking the earth’s limits. How will we overcome this global problem? #TapandTellKatie, Nichole and Alfred

War and Conflict Ayden and I have been researching global war and conflict. This is negatively affecting the world, and this problem mainly affects the people who believe in a religion. Terrorist groups have been bombing churches, temples and mosques, and harming people who believe in a religion. They need help trying to avoid these disasters and they need it fast. #TapandTellNiccolo and Ayden

Racism/Discrimination Racism is a major global problem. Many people can’t see, and don’t want to see everyone equally. How would you feel if people were mean to you? said self-deprecating comments to you or not bother to talk to you at all because of the colour of your skin? If you are living in Australia, you might not have experienced racism. But globally thousands, even millions of people have! We need to stop racism and advocate for equality. #TapandTellUrsa and Aluat

Domestic Violence Domestic violence is a big problem in the world and still happens now. Children are even sometimes harmed when domestic violence affects their family. People don’t understand this problem and some don’t even take it seriously. Some families are experiencing domestic violence right now. This issue is preventable, and you can help by using the #TapandTell hashtag and spreading the word. Let’s raise awareness and help those who are currently affected. Anmol and Ricky

Modern Day Slavery We have been researching about modern day slavery. We have found out that slavery is most common in developing countries, such as Kenya, Afghanistan, etc. The country with the highest percentage of slavery is India. Join the #TapandTell initiative and help get the word out there. Say no to slavery! Faris and Cooper

Climate Change We are focusing on the global issue of climate change and how it negatively affects the world. Climate change is a very serious problem, especially in developing countries such as Africa, South America and Kenya, who don’t have the resources to develop sustainable practices. It affects the temperature of the sea, which results in the ice from the North Pole and the South Pole melting. This causes the sea level to rise, which can flood towns and cities that are close to the beach. Climate change also causes the food chain in the ocean to become corrupt. If this problem is not solved within a reasonable timeframe, our existence will be in danger.#TapandTellSophie, Addison, and Max

Global Corruption Global corruption has been slowly making a comeback. Jack and I have decided to put a stop to this and spread the word about global corruption. We want to support the people affected and help the world realize that the conditions of people living in these countries are less than optimal. They are attempting to adapt to these changes, and have been for many generations. They can’t keep living like this! Let’s talk about it and find ways to raise awareness! #TapandTellJack and Harvey

Grade 6 Netball Divisional Finals

Congratulations to the girl’s netball A team, who last week competed in the second round of netball inter-school sports. The girls showed amazing sportsmanship in all three games. The team consisted of Aliyah from 6JB, Chloe from 6JJ, Maddison from 6AA, Isabella from 6JB, Sarah from 6JB, Bianca from 6JB, Rinad from 6JB, Jennifer from 6AA and Phoenix from 6JJ.

Unfortunately the team won’t be progressing to the next round, but all of the students learnt valuable new skills and further developed many friendships. Well done to everyone that competed, and a big thank you to all of the mums that attended and showed their support.

Mathletics

Once again, Seabrook Primary School is providing free membership to Mathletics for all of our students for use both in the classroom and at home. This powerful internet based, award winning mathematics program is an exceptional tool in promoting increased confidence, understanding and enjoyment of mathematics in our students.Mathletics in an important resource in our classroom numeracy programs. Teachers receive a great deal of useful data from Mathletics regarding individual student’s participation and progress through the different topics completed both at school and home. Teachers can individualise Mathletics to suite each student’s ability, interests and learning requirements.

Parents can ensure that your children gets the most out of Mathletics by:• Taking an active role in your child’s

mathematics progress,• Encourage your child to use Mathletics at

least 3-5 times each week,• Encourage a balance between the Full

Curriculum section and Mathletics Live,• Take time to work together with your child.

The Support Centre in each activity will help show how to solve a particular problem,

• Encourage your child to complete activities that challenge, rather than those he/she finds easy,

• If the level your child is working at is too easy, speak to the class teacher about setting a different default level for your child,

• Celebrate your child’s success, print the certificates out and display them at home.

Mathletics is developing new activities and areas all the time. For more information on Mathletics check the web site or speak to your child’s teacher. Paul Cochran
