Thanks heaps to the mums, dads, kids and staff who lent a hand on Saturday morning. A significant amount of planting was done in our courtyard garden beds, which was well watered in on Sunday! We will begin a campaign of „Please keep off the garden beds‟ in order to give these plants the best chance of success. From here on everyone will be encouraged to keep off the beds so our plants can flourish and the tree roots can continue to develop undisturbed. Thanks to our parents who also labored to remove dead trees and other growth, clean out gutters, remove concrete debris, remove cobwebs, weeding, erect light fencing and even cleaning the kitchen and bathroom in the admin building. In the Garden

The children in PREP S have been investigating the “connection”

between plants, the sun and water through our inquiry focused

on The Garden. We have also been inquiring into the

“connection” between plants and the creatures that live in our

gardens.

This week we planted a variety of lettuces and some flowers in

the raised garden beds in the courtyard. The children learnt

about the correct planting techniques and determined that our

plants require both sun and water to grow.

They have been interested to see that birds and insects have

been seen around the garden beds. This is reinforcing the

concept of “connection” as they now understand that the birds

and insects need the plants for food and shelter.

We are hoping that the birds and insects leave enough lettuces

for us to harvest.

WEEKLY MATHEMATICS

COLUMN

DOING MATHS TOGETHER AT HOME

Children need lots of experiences in making, counting, drawing and talking about numbers. Make connections for your child by explaining how numbers and counting are a part of every-day life. There are lots of activities you can do at home using everyday items to help explore maths with your child. FOCUS: Counting PREP

Count the food items as

they are placed in the trolley or unpacked at home.

Count the steps to the letter

box, front door, clothes line.

Count days on a calendar.

ONE & TWO

Identify the counting

patterns on letterboxes.

Newspaper numbers -

Provide your child with a range of magazines and catalogues. Ask them to cut out all the numbers they can find and paste them in order from smallest to largest on a piece of paper.

THREE, FOUR, FIVE & SIX

Compare the cost of two of

the same products across different stores using different catalogues. Find the difference between the two items.

What are the cheapest and

most expensive items in your catalogue? What is the difference in price?

Select an item or items

from the catalogue an calculate the change given from $20 and/or $50.

Select an item or items

from the catalogue. Calculate what the cost would be if it was on sale for 50%.

More maths

coming your way!

The children of 4KW have brought in artefacts that relate to our inquiry 'Indigenous communities have different perspectives of historical events'. The students have been very committed to taking action to find these artefacts, and are knowledgeable when sharing them with their peers.

DISTRICT SPORTS TRIALS Over the last couple of weeks we have had a number of students trial in football, soccer, netball and basketball at District level. This is the first step for making the state primary school team in each of these sports. Well done to Aaron Searle and Chelsea Shields Harris, who have made it past both District and Divisional level and now will go to the Regional trial. Jess Curry Hughes also made it past the District level to the Divisional trial, as did Rory Kalnins and Brandon Fumic with soccer and Rory, Brady Cook and Matthew Micevski in football. Well done to all those students and to Aaron and Chelsea at their next trial.

WALK TO SCHOOL SAFELY DAY- FRIDAY 18TH MAY Friday is Walk Safely to work day. Why is it good to Walk to school?

It‟s fun - you can meet friends and see things you might miss in a car. It‟s good for the environment. If you don‟t use the car all the time to come to school, you are saving the environment from Greenhouse Gas Emissions. It‟s a healthier option and gives you some good exercise. We need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. If you can walk all the way from home, or some of the way on Friday that would be great. You can organise to walk with some friends or neighbours that go to the school, which will be fun to do. If you can‟t walk, maybe you could scoot or ride as well, as they are both healthy options too. GRADE 2 SWIMMING The Grade 2 Swimming program has been going very well by all reports. Student, parent and teacher feedback has been very positive over the first few sessions, with smaller group sizes, a better quality program and instructors, no general public access, and closer to the school. We look forward to making this a permanent arrangement in the future. In the next couple of weeks will have some reports from students about what they have been learning and their reflections about the program. We will also be sending home notes soon for the Grade 1 students, who will commence their program late this term or at the start of term 3.
