Music with a Mission features Downeasters Chorus in concert Saturday September 14th

On Saturday, September 14th at 7:00 PM, the Downeasters Chorus will perform a concert at the North Windham Union Church. The Downeasters sing barbershop harmony and have been entertaining fans in Greater Portland for almost 65 years! The chorus is made up of about 35 men ranging from twenty something’s to eighty something’s who all share a common passion for singing great harmony. They come from all over southern Maine with several members from the Windham/Raymond area including the conductor, Jack Baggs, and our very own MWAM member, Wally Duplessie. The Downeasters concert will feature several of the chapter quartets, and will also include special guests, Flashpoint!, a women’s barbershop quartet. Flashpoint!’s voices are… ‘as strong as the coffee they drink, the hairspray they use and the friendship they’ve shared for decades’.

This concert is the eighth in the “Music with a Mission” series sponsored by the North Windham Union Church. The church donates a portion of the proceeds to area non-profits. The Downeasters have chosen to support Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors with the community proceeds from this concert. The dedicated volunteers at Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors provide fuel assistance to people in need throughout the community.

Tickets will be sold at the door and are $12 for adults and $10 for students, children, and seniors. The box office opens at 6:15 and the doors will open at 6:30. The North Windham Union Church is located at 723 Roosevelt Trail in Windham and is air-conditioned for your comfort. For more information please call 892-7149 or email [email protected].

“The Downeasters always have a great following as they perform around Maine throughout the years,” said Dr. Richard Nickerson, Minister of Music for NWUC. “They have fabulous harmony as they ring chords on classic chestnuts and more modern arrangements of recent hit tunes.” The Downeasters are the current Pine Division Champions, and have won numerous awards at barbershop competitions over the past decade. So they should be in tip-top shape as this is their last concert before the 2013 regional competition in October. Nickerson added, “we are also very excited to welcome back Flashpoint! Their baritone, Norma Marks, is very active in our church, and our congregation has enjoyed this terrific quartet several times in recent years.”

So far, the Music with a Mission concerts have provided almost $6,000 in support of NWUC and direct gifts to local non-profits. Please join us for a cool, comfortable concert and enjoy The Downeasters

FOLLOW THE DISCUSSION ON THE BLOG

Scoring Variance Process draws plenty of discussion A lively conversation has developed on the Society's blog regarding the Scoring Variance Process recently announced for implementation this fall. To review,

A "scoring variance" is defined as when at least one judge awards a song with a score that is significantly higher or lower than the other scores from the panel. Judges have long discussed these variances in the days and weeks following a contest; since early 2012, the Society's Contest & Judging (C&J) Committee has been looking at methods to address significant scoring differences (variances) before they become official.... If a statistical variance occurs with a set of scores given for a performance of a song, the judges within the category will have the opportunity to review their sheets and potentially change their scores. Read the full description here.

First, importantly -- it isn't "Instant Replay". At no time during the past 18 months has the judging community referred to it as such. It has no name, other than "Variance Process." It is a change to our scoring process. Headline writers in search of a catchy phrase dubbed it "instant replay," and introduced some confusion. Here ends the use of that term. Vigorous, thoughtful discussion among members and judges has been fascinating, ranging from statistical analysis, to "what if? scenarios, to reviewing the genesis and development of

Page 9: 8/30/2013 Soundings Weekly

the variance process over the past 18 months. Just as the judging program aims to enhance performers' understanding of their audience effect, this open and frank discussion has been an interesting insight into the long debate and consideration the judging community has taken in testing and delivering this new process. Read it -- learn about it - and add your thoughts to the discussion. LiveWire is the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Weekly Newsletter Have you signed up for LiveWire yet?
