WHEREAS, the Barbershop Harmony Society is dedicated to the spread of harmony for the enjoyment of all people of the world through organizing and encouraging close-harmony singing groups; and WHEREAS, the Barbershop Harmony Society encourages harmony among all people of the world through the universal language of music; and WHEREAS, the Barbershop Harmony Society has actively preserved and presented a distinct style of vocal music that originated in North America; and WHEREAS, the Barbershop Harmony Society is dedicated to sustaining and preserving an American tradition, the barbershop quartet; and WHEREAS, the Barbershop Harmony Society promotes musical education through music scholarships and other means and supports charitable foundations; and WHEREAS, "barbershoppers" are engaged in laudable civic service and enrichment of our cultural life through the fostering of traditional values in entertainment and community endeavors; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED: That We, the Members of the One Hundred and Twenty-sixth Legislature now assembled in the First Regular Session, on behalf of the people we represent, take this opportunity to recognize the week of April 7-13, 2013 as Barbershop Harmony Week.

Project 23K of The Barbershop Harmony Society 23K Project

We're reaching out to touch you!

On April 1st (no foolin!), an army of volunteer callers will begin contacting every BHS member by telephone. You will be asked to give your opinion about the level of satisfaction with your own personal barbershop experience and to recommend things that need to be added, changed, improved or deleted to improve the barbershop experience. Each member will also be given the opportunity to send a message directly to the CEO and/or society president. Every member will be invited to enlist as a soldier in the BHS volunteer army, to help with projects for the society and his district. Additionally, the calling team will be gathering information to compile a database of skills and talents possessed by our members. The database and comments will be used by society leaders to plan, create and lay the foundations of a better future for our society. We hope you will be prepared to relate your membership experience, help develop the skills database and share your vision for the future when one of our 23K project volunteers calls you. If someone calls and you are not at home, please help our calling team by returning the call. Dare to be part of making dreams come true!

Ask Not What Your Society Can Do For You...

Page 6: 4/12/2013 Soundings Weekly

The 23K project needs approximately 200 volunteers to man the phones as we reach out to every member of our society. Each caller will be asked to make approximately 100 calls during a six month period. Volunteer callers can work at their own pace but must make a minimum of 2 calls per week. The length of each call varies---the average being 20 to 25 minutes. Callers will work from questionnaire on a dedicated web site, completing and filing each report on line. Those who are interested and can make this commitment should contact Bud Laumann HERE. Bud will provide you with a formal invitation, log on information and complete instructions for making calls. A calling list of members in your time zone will be provided. Only those who are sincerely interested in meeting new friends and helping with this vital project should apply for enrollment as a member of the 23K calling team. Callers who successfully complete 120 calls within the first six months of the program will be entered into a drawing for a VIP registration at the Las Vegas International convention. Two prizes will be awarded. We're calling for your help. Can you answer? Welcome Back, Columbus Dick Wheeler

It was a most pleasant surprise for this writer to hear CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS sung by the Port City Sound at the WYAR Benefit Show Sunday. In about 1999 there was an attempt to revive this song and one other. Columbus had been out of the repertory for some time. However, there was strong opposition to the idea. Fred Moore was our director as i recall. The politically correct forces led by an adamant Roger Sklar (remember him?) outvoted the opposition after a testy exchange and both numbers were canned much to this writer's chagrin. The other song which the PC side managed to dump was "I'll Be Standing On The Pier Handing Out Doughnuts When They Send The Girls Over There". This had never been a chorus number but had been a staple of this writer's quartets or some of them. Political correctness won out and these two songs were banished from the repertory. Once again thanks to the Port City Sound for making my day. An Old Curmudgeon
