Burger joints may be nothing special, but a locally-sourced, family run burger lounge stands out from the

crowd. Bin 4 is exactly such an establishment and the Victo-ria-based business is hiring. Operations Manager Gary Stra-chan has a tip for you: Don’t rely on your resume to stand outfrom the crowd.

“To get your personality across on a resume is very diffi-cult,” says Gary. “I find that in the restaurant industry, toomuch information is a negative. When I look through resumesand see 12-15 jobs under employment and 2-3 paragraphsunder likes and hobbies, I tend to scan them rather than fullyread them.”

Bin 4 managers schedule weekly open interviews at allthree restaurant locations. This is the best way for applicantsto submit a resume, according to Gary. Alternately, you canfind Bin 4 representatives at a Hospitality Job Fair on Thurs-day, May 12, hosted by GT Hiring Solutions. Register withyour WorkBC Employment Service Advisor or contact Sue [email protected].

Handing over a resume in person allows the hiring managerto get that critical first impression one-on-one. “I have beeninterviewing people in the restaurant industry for 15 yearsnow and the first 2 minutes of any interview is the most criti-cal time for me when it comes to consideration for employ-ment,” says Gary.

Bin 4 is filling entry-level kitchen positions such as dish-washer, prep cook and fryer cooks. They are also looking to fillfront-of-house positions like hostess/hostand bussers. Whilesome experience isnecessary, direct

experience is not something the restaurant always requires.“Training people to follow our procedures and customer ser-vice is easier than training people to have great personalitiesand be confident in what they do,” explains Gary.

Competition is greatest for the hosting positions. The res-taurant receives as many as 40 resumes for such openings, according to Gary. A face-to-face meeting can help propelyou to the top of the stack. Start things off with a firm hand-shake, consistent eye contact, and a professional appear-ance. Applying to work at a lounge doesn’t give you license toshow up to an interview in a tube top. From there, just letthe conversation flow, recommends Gary. Over scripting youranswers can make for an awkward interview.

Bear in mind that first impressions are also made online.Gary says scanning social media has largely replaced the ref-erence checks he once relied on: “It’s OK to speak your mind, but Victoria is a small town, especially within the restaurantscene, and if you choose to use social media as a platform tocomplain about someone [at work], be prepared for a poten-tial employer to see that.” The lesson here: Clean up yourFacebook account before launching a job search.

A final bit of advice from Bin 4: Set your sights high. Somepeople mistakenly regard restaurant industry jobs as littlemore than a paycheque while they prepare for a “real” ca-reer. Gary is proof of the fallacy of this misconception. “Istarted in the industry like everybody else as a dishwasherand made it a goal to learn everything I could,” he reminisc-es. “Now that I am the Operations Manager for all 3 locationsof Bin 4 Burger Lounge, I continue to try and learn and growin my position. I enjoy the challenge.”

Predicting labour market demand is a tricky proposi-tion. Great effort is spent every year in this country

trying to forecast where there will be a future shortage orsurplus of workers in various occupations. Technology hasgreatly complicated this tricky task, as new jobs are con-stantly being created that did not previously exist. Job titleslike XU Guru, Social Media Manager, Chief Digital Officer andRuby on Rails Developer are just a few of the examples ofthis. These jobs did not exist a short generation ago, so la-bour market forecasting in this age has become exceedinglycomplex. One thing that helps is to be able to discern thedifference between a trend and a fad.

Over the last year or so I keep coming across news storiesrelated to the development of driverless vehicles. Once thestuff of science fiction, this technology is now at the pointwhere driverless vehicles are out on the road and constantlybeing tested and improved. Driverless cars have been pre-dicted to be employment-killers in various sectors includinginsurance and law enforcement, as well as automobile manu-facturing, sales and repair. As most driverless vehicles arepowered by electricity (or are hybrids) it is projected thatthere will be less demand for gasoline so the energy sectorcould be greatly affected as well. It is people who drive for aliving who are most at risk, however. In April the Globe andMail reported that the jobs of “300,000 transport truck driv-

By Tony Abbis

ers and 50,000 to 60,000 taxi drivers are at risk of beingeliminated”.

Perhaps the estimates are inflated, but it is easy to seethe risk. Is the arrival of this technology a fad that will proveto be impractical due to safety and legal issues? Will we seedriverless car and truck technology relegated to the side-lines, never being adopted on a broad scale?

The questions have already been answered and the robotsare winning. Just last month a “platoon” of six self-drivingtrucks successfully made a cross-border journey in Europe. These particular trucks had an operator on board, but thepoint is an operator is not actually needed. This technology isalready at the point where it is being implemented and, infact, is being used in Canada’s oil sands.

One of the reasons that companies embrace robotics, au-tomation, and artificial intelligence is that it allows them toeliminate the costliest part of their operations: us. A driver-less car doesn’t need to stop and sleep and it doesn’t need tobe paid a salary or benefits. Once it is purchased it justneeds to be maintained. Companies will adopt this technolo-gy to increase profits and those that don’t will find them-selves at a competitive disadvantage.

Concerns around self-piloting vehicles abound, and for thatreason, people who currently drive for a living and those whowant to, need not panic — but they should be aware of thistrend and the effect it could have on their careers.

The world of work continues to rapidly change, and tech-nology is one of the main forces that impacts how and wherewe will work in the future. Being able to differentiate be-tween a fad and a trend, constant skill upgrading and beingnimble enough to jump between sectors and jobs is going tobe the key to effective career management.

of commerce and Meetups, there’s always something goingon,” says the man who many refer to as “Victoria’s marketingguru”. It’s all about selling yourself — whether to a futureclient or future employer. You’ve got to get your message outthere. “Even if you don’t meet the right people, consider itan opportunity to brush up on your networking skills,” advisesChris.

2 . F A M I L I A R I T Y W I T H T H E M A R K E TThe first step when building a business is to thoroughly re-

search the market. A successful business plan and financingdepend on whether there is demand for your goods/services.Likewise, when conducting job research, you’ll want to get afeel for what skills are in demand. Don’t stop at the hiringcompany’s website. Look at the industry as a whole: Whattraining is required? What are wages like? Who are the keyplayers in the industry? Where are the opportunities forgrowth? This is the kind of information that will help youwrite an informed cover letter and ultimately sound crediblein an interview.

3 . V E R S A T I L I T YChange is the only constant in today’s job market. Gone

are the days when the majority of the population stayed inone job for life. Like the small business owner who is con-stantly adapting to her client’s needs, job seekers need to beopen to reinventing themselves mid-career. This will proba-bly involve acquiring new skills. When researching a new ca-reer direction, don’t be afraid to look at areas outside yourcomfort zone. Need to update your technical skills? Comput-ers are often less intimidating in a classroom setting. Speakto your WorkBC Employment Service Advisor about education-al resources available in your field of interest.

“There are not that many full-time jobs to step into thesedays,” says Chris. “More common are the contract-based,

freelance or part-time jobs. [Job seekers] need to changetheir mindset, brush up on their skills, and maybe do somecontract work that might lead to a full-time position.”

4 . D E T E R M I N A T I O NEntrepreneurs don’t give up — or at least not the success-

ful ones. Just as a small business weathers the ups anddowns, so too must the job seeker stay the course. In thebusiness world, everyone faces rejection: from banks, inves-tors, clients, and employers. Feeling discouraged is natural, but you must tap into that inner mojo that gets you back inthe game. Discover what makes you excited about life andfind a way to incorporate that into your work.

“I don’t necessarily ascribe to the notion of following yourbliss,” says Chris. “Your passion might be finger painting. ButI think it’s possible to find a good balance between what youare passionate about and what can make you some money.”Building upon his enthusiasm for innovation, Chris co-foundedSocial Media Camp in 2010. It gives him an opportunity toexplore and share ideas around social media — somethingthat inspires him and supports his business.

5 . P A T I E N C EJust as a start-up does not take flight overnight, getting

noticed in today’s job market takes perseverance. JoblessCanadians looking for work remain unemployed for fivemonths on average, according to Employment and Social De-velopment Canada. If your electronic resume fails to make itpast a company’s digital filters, try a different approach. Toborrow a favourite marketing metaphor: Think outside thebox. In this case, that might well mean thinking beyond yourlaptop. Personal connections open doors. Employers won’tknow what they’re missing unless you tell them.
