Everybody in Epworth has a story, but as this story started falling together, I discovered every building in Epworth also has a story. I interviewed Sheila and Jim Dougherty on the topic of the Callahan log cabin. Both insisted that there wasn’t much to tell but as Jim started remembering things so did Sheila. Sheila’s parents Connor and Min Callahan purchased the property on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Old Highway 20 from Anna Hanger. (Note: Name could not be verified.) The property contained a house and a small log cabin-looking shed on the northwest corner of the lot.

Around 1947, Connor hired Dick and Tom Hamilton to run a small cafe out of the cabin, and it soon became known to the locals as the “Log Cabin Drive-In”. Dick Hamilton said, “It was called a drive-in by most of the Epworth citizens, but you could never just drive-up, order, and drive away.” The cabin contained a kitchen and a bar with four or five bar stools. Customers could order and sit inside to eat, or Sheila remembered taking food out to those who sat outside at picnic tables. Dick thought the drive-in was only open during the summer, and the hours were from 2 or 3 o’clock until around 11 PM.

Verna McDermott and Mary Lou Kramer remember it as the place where the high schoolers hung out. There was a basketball hoop for basketball games, and sometimes the boys would have to stop their baseball game on the highway to let a car or two pass. would often make a half of a malt if a customer only had a nickel instead of a dime to cover the cost of a full malt.

After Dick and Tom graduated, the log cabin was used for storage, and one summer a family lived in it until they purchased a house. In 1951, the Callahan children again reopened the cabin and took over cooking and serving. Tony, Patsy, and Mick ran the log cabin drive-in for several years from 1951-53, and then Sheila joined them and kept it going until she graduated in 1956. Sheila still has the menu placard hanging on the wall of her basement. According to it, a customer would have been able to buy a jumbo hamburger, a Huberty pop, and a Smoozie bar for 40 cents.

One of the Callahan girls, Patsy, met her future husband, Bart French, at the log cabin. He was a highway patrolman, who seemed to be sweet on both the log cabin malts and Patsy. Other local couples, such as Clarence and Elenor Urbain, Rusty and Jean Scott, and Judy and Ike Berger were also reported to have spent some of their spooning time there.

And so since 1900, the little log cabin has stood on the corner of the lot now owned by Peter Kennedy, while quietly watching the many changes that have happened in the town of Epworth since its heyday as a teen’s hangout.

Geronimo Stilton has a new edition--The Colusseum Ghost. There are two new James Patterson books for young readers in his House of Robots series. (However, does he write all those books?) Yes, Mark Twain, a.k.a. Samuel Clemens, who died in 1910 when Halley’s comet flew across the sky, but he left a story… well, he told the story to his young daughters, who later wrote notes about it. Those notes have been assembled and fleshed out by Philip Stead with illustrations by Erin Stead. The name of the book is The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine. Do come and check it out – literally! ~ Julie Eggleston

Tips for a Safe and Fun Summer!

With outdoor activities in full swing, please keep the following items in mind: ATVs and Golf Carts are subject to restrictions on City streets and are to keep off the truck route.

Trees are required to be kept trimmed at least eight (8) foot high along sidewalks and fifteen (15) feet high over streets. The property owner is responsible for the trees on his or her property.

Recreational Fires can add to summer fun when done safely. City ordinance requires recreation fires to be surrounded by an above-ground non-combustible material and be smaller than 4’x4’ in area with flames no higher than 4’. Fires must be attended at all times or completely extinguished if unattended. Firewood or clean, untreated lumber are the only permissible items for burning.

Vehicles may be stored outdoors in the owner’s yard if they are currently licensed and operable. Inoperable vehicles, car parts, and machinery must be stored inside.

Street Parking Vehicles may be parked on city streets for a period of 48 hours. Commercial vehicles while directly engaged in activities for which such vehicles are necessary can be parked for the duration. Trailers, boats, campers, and equipment may not be parked on streets.

Grass Blown in Streets is a littering violation and subject to a $100 fine.

Message from the MayorSandy Gassman

Thank you to the group who brought the Easter Bunny to Epworth. Weather forced them to postpone the Easter Egg Hunt and have a Meet-and-Greet on the Saturday before Easter. This group works very hard to get things ready, and we appreciate their efforts to welcome the Easter Bunny to entertain the youngsters.

I would also like to thank Matt Gibbs and Brett Featherston for their work with the City. Both have decided to move on to other jobs. We are grateful for their dedication to Epworth and wish them well in their new endeavors. We are interviewing at this time and hope to have a replacement soon. If you see new faces, be sure to welcome them. Steve Zalaznik will help on an as-needed basis, and Mike Klein and Alan Kramer will be seasonal workers primarily for mowing.

As the weather improves, the game courts will be painted, nets put in place, and the other basketball net installed. I’ve already seen people shooting baskets and look forward to seeing tennis and pickleball players using the area soon. A drinking fountain near East Park along the walking trail, and a concrete ping pong table near the pavilion will be installed in the near future.

There will be pavement work on Bobcat Road (the extension of Fifth Avenue on the south side of Highway 20) beginning soon. Fifth Avenue is in the plans to be reconstructed in a few years.

Plaques indicating the donors for lights along Jacoby Walkway will be ordered soon. The City is still taking donations for the lights. For $500, you can have a plaque placed on a pole.

A reminder that Midwest Organic is no longer taking yard waste. The City offers curbside pickup with a $2.00 tag available at City Hall. Open burning of yard waste is allowed during daylight hours April 1st to May 15th. The burn site must be attended and reported to County non-emergency dispatch at 583-1711.

Epworth Police DepartmentJames Kauffmann, Epworth Police 563-876-3050

The Epworth Police Department would like to thank everyone for their cooperation during the three declared snow emergencies this past winter. Snow emergencies are new to the city of Epworth and the citizens did a great job of getting their vehicles off the streets and alleys to allow snowplow drivers to clear the snow.

With spring around the corner, so begins yard work. The city allows open burning during daylight hours starting April 1st and running through May 15th. The burn site must be attended and reported to Dubuque County Dispatch at 563-583-1711.

Please keep the city ordinances in mind when operating your ATV/UTV and golf carts on city streets. ATVs/UTVs and golf carts shall not be operated upon a city street that is a primary road extension through the city but shall be allowed to cross a city street, which is a primary road extension through the city. Primary road extensions are defined as the truck route and shall include Center Avenue, Bierman Road, Jacoby Drive, 5th Ave. SW, Main Street, 2nd St. NW, and 1st Ave. NE.

All-terrain Vehicles The operation of an all-terrain (ATV/UTV) is governed by Iowa Code section 321.234A and 321I. An all-terrain vehicle may be operated within the city limits in compliance with the following: A person operating an all-terrain vehicle on a city street shall have a valid driver’s license, proof of financial responsibility, registered with the county, and the vehicle shall be operated at speeds of twenty-five miles per hour or less.

Golf Carts Reference Iowa Code 321.247 Golf carts may be operated on city streets by persons possessing a valid driver’s license and having proof of financial liability. The golf carts shall be equipped with a slow moving vehicle sign and a bicycle safety flag and operate on the streets only from sunrise to sunset. Golf carts operated on city streets shall be equipped with adequate brakes. Golf carts are not subject to the registration provisions of the Iowa Code.

The warmer weather brings out walkers, joggers, bicyclists, and motorcycles. Please keep this in mind when driving. With a little extra effort, we can make the summer of 2018 a fun and safe time for everyone.

The Epworth Community Volunteer Firemen, Inc. is preparing for a busy couple of months as we start our fundraising season. The members of the department conduct two fundraisers annually in order to support our volunteer fire department. The annual dance will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018, at the fire station. Kevin Frommelt and the band “Road Kill” will once again be providing the entertainment for the evening. We will start with a happy hour, food, and refreshments at 5:30 PM and the band will start at 7:00 PM. Memorial Day weekend is a busy one, and we hope that you will spend some time with us on Friday evening, relaxing, enjoying friends, and supporting your volunteer ambulance service. The dance has been very successful over the recent years, mainly due to the overwhelming support of our mail campaign. We thank you for your support of this dance, and we hope you will welcome back Kevin Frommelt and the “Road Kill” band.

The 70th annual firemen’s picnic will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018, at the fire station. This fundraiser supplements the fire department operations. Proceeds are mainly used for equipment upgrades and to supplement our training budget. The main event of the picnic has become the silent auction. The community support through donated items and the generous bidders in attendance are truly appreciated. Your support of these fundraising events is critical to our operations. There are many worthy benefits held each weekend, and we understand we are competing for limited money from donors. Thank you for your support, attendance, donations of auction items, or helping us out in a stand. Your support is greatly appreciated.

I would like to publicly thank our volunteer members for their dedication and commitment to making sure each call for service is answered promptly. The members are to be commended for giving freely of their time and talents to help people in our community. Our members do not receive any compensation for responding to calls.

We hope that everyone has a safe and wonderful spring and summer season. Please check out our website at www.epworthiowafire.org for updates and information about the department. If you are interested in becoming a member of the department, please consider talking to a current member to gain some insight and information on the department. Your donations to our upcoming silent auction are needed, and I thank you in advance for considering a donation. We look forward to seeing everyone at our dance and picnic, and we thank you for your continued support.

Did you Know? There are TWO libraries in Epworth!By Daniel Williams, Divine Word College

In addition to the Epworth Branch of the Dubuque County Library, there is the Matthew Jacoby Library at Divine Word College. Both libraries are available for your use! As a student assistant in the library back in the late 1970’s, I can remember Fr. Jacoby allowing everyone in our area access to library resources. The tradition continues!

Over the years, there have been quite a few changes in the library, but we still welcome library users from the surrounding community. The biggest change is that, with the new online catalog system and the addition of a self-checkout station, everyone needs a library card to borrow materials. Getting a library card is easy. If you’re sixteen or over, just bring your ID (driver’s license, etc.), see the librarian, answer a few simple questions, and a new card will be printed for you on the spot. Library items may be borrowed for a period of 14 days and usually may be renewed for an additional 14 days if desired. The Matthew Jacoby Library currently has a collection of over 70,000 items including books, magazines, newspapers, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs. The library is available to the general public Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM. Please register at the front entrance of the school when visiting the library. So if you want to find a book to help you with your studies, are looking for some pleasure reading, or just want to find a good movie to watch this evening, feel free to drop in and get a library card for the Matthew Jacoby Library.

Did I mention? There is no charge for the library card.

Usually, when I write this article preparing for the summer issue of the Voice of Progress, I am basking in the beauty of daffodils and comfort of spring warmth. This year, winter is lasting far too long for my taste. I was chatting with someone earlier today, and I was bemoaning the weather (it snowed this morning, April 9th). She said, “I’m grateful that it was just a dusting, and I didn’t have to shovel.” Whether she meant to or not, she communicated an important message to me: Focus on the gifts of today, not the inconveniences.

Seasons of our lives don’t always go the way we expect. Sometimes we get stuck in a winter that lasts longer than we ever would have wanted. When I was growing up in South Texas, summer was the season that would never end. The dog days of 100+ degree temps lasted for months. Seasons don’t always go the way we want, but we can make the best out of them.

Soon enough, the weather will match up with the month, and we’ll enjoy those warm summer nights on the porch. We will have plenty of moments to enjoy the seasons. For now, whatever your circumstances, find a way be glad a little every day. There is always a reason to.

“Be glad in the Lord always! Again I say, be glad! Let your gentleness show in your treatment of all people. The Lord is near. Don’t be anxious about anything; rather, bring up all of your requests to God in your prayers and petitions, along with giving thanks. Then the peace of God that exceeds all understanding will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:4-7
