Well done to the two teams and all of the students who took up the challenged associated with debating; oral and aural communication, decision-making, research and collaboration. I would like to recognise the support of our teaching staff who volunteered their time with the debating teams. Two staff members, Nisan Tuazon and Shannyn Siemens have been selected to be Champions as part of the Academy of Science reSolve: Mathematics in Inquiry. During the school holidays they undertook training. Aberfoyle Park High School has air conditioning throughout the school. As the warmer weather approaches, students are in cool spaces during school hours. The school does not dismiss early in hot weather. We have just been notified that the school has been allocated $10 million to upgrade our teaching and learning facilities as part of the Building Better Schools program.

SERVICE TO MUSIC AWARDS At the recent Year 12 Final Assembly we congratulated and celebrated the achievements of some of our Year 12 Music students. These students received Service to Music Awards in recognition of their significant contributions to the APHS Music Program through involvement in one or more of our co-curricular music ensembles, sectional leadership and mentoring of younger musicians during their years at the school. Ensemble rehearsals, tutorials, performances and individual practice all take place outside of normal scheduled lesson times. The commitment, dedication, persistence, teamwork and leadership that these students have demonstrated helps maintain the high performance standards of our school’s premier music ensembles, as showcased at this year’s Elder Hall Music Showcase in August. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate these students on the many successful performances they have presented at other music concerts over the past five years. I want them all to know how proud we are of all their musical achievements. I feel delighted to have had the opportunity to work with such a great group of well-rounded, good-humoured young people, and thank them for their music and friendship, and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. The 2017 Year 12 Service to Music Award recipients were:

• Chelsea Zilm – Concert Band • Harry Guan – Concert Band • Sarah Bullitis – Concert Band and Choir • Brittany Cutts – Concert Band and Choir • Mitchell Love – Concert Band and Big Band • Demian Jeong – Concert Band and String Ensemble • Jarryd Sutton – Concert Band, Choir and Big Band • Zoe Chandler – Concert Band, Choir and Big Band • Xuan Ye – Concert Band, String Ensemble and Choir • Emily Siemensma – Concert Band, Big Band, Choir and String Ensemble • Ryan Grunwald - Concert Band, Big Band, Choir and Percussion Ensemble

APHS INTERSCHOOL DEBATING 2017 Debating SA is a not-for-profit Association that conducts an Interschool Debating Competition, involving some 200 schools within South Australia, and is proud to acknowledge His Excellency, The Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia, as its Patron

Over Terms 2 and 3, 21 Aberfoyle Park High students enthusiastically committed themselves to preparing and delivering up to eight challenging debates, against teams from a range of independent and state schools, in the 2017 Debating SA Competition.

This year, we again entered four teams, in Year 8, 9, 10 and Senior Divisions supported by Ms Bridie Connell, Ms Donna-Marie Ferguson, Ms Riley Sabey, and Ms Vanda Farrall as coaches. These hardworking and dedicated teams put in many hours of their own time to prepare complex responses to a range of challenging social issues. In particular, with much pride and jubilation, we congratulate our Year 10 and Senior Teams, whose powerful arguments and sophisticated presentation skills won the Grand Championship Trophy in the Year 10 and Open Division Finals, at Parliament House on Saturday 23 September, against teams from Pembroke Senior School and Tatachilla Lutheran College, respectively. Year 10 Finals Debate Team: Ella-Mae Redington – Timekeeper; and speakers Sam Herden, Molly-Eve Day and Khevalin Parekh

Open Finals Debate Team: Katie Kozaderova – timekeeper and speakers Dylan Oliver, Alex Herden and Ellyane Wall.

We are particularly thrilled to congratulate Ellyane Wall and Alex Herden who have helped to bring home a Grand Championship Trophy for APHS for the THIRD YEAR in a row!

Vanda Farrell, Interschool Debating Coach

GOVERNOR’S RECEPTION The annual Governor's Reception was held on the 18th of September for Year 12 representatives of schools across SA. We had the immense privilege of representing our school in attending this evening reception. The evening commenced impressively with an introduction to the Honourable Mr. Hieu Van Le and his wife Mrs. Van Le in the lavish foyer of Government House. Following this, we were met with generous hospitality and ‘finger food and drinks’ of the highest calibre. The Governor then gave an inspiring and thought-provoking speech about his life story regarding his younger years spent in his war-torn home country - giving all the students in the room a new perspective on some of our own high school struggles. Mrs. Van Le toured some students around the grand Government House detailing some of its significance and historical background. We were most impressed by the exuberant furniture and incredible paintings. The event also gave us the opportunity to speak with students from schools across the state. Some of our most memorable conversations were with the students from Adelaide High School and Yankalilla Area School discussing, rather impendingly, our plans for the future. We are both so grateful for the experience and the amazing opportunity the evening gave us to meet the Governor, his wife, and the student leaders from around Adelaide. THIRD YEAR IGNITE PROGRAM Third Year Ignites conquer Mt Lofty Challenge On Thursday 14 September, third year Ignite students completed a challenge to walk from Mt Lofty to Waterfall Gully. Completing this walk was a part of their Ignition program which has a focus on developing a healthy body and mind.

The students had been completing fitness training prior to the walk, and also participating in mindfulness exercises to develop their resilience. This training was put to the test, as we braved wet and windy weather throughout the walk.

We were incredibly proud of the team spirit and resilience demonstrated during the day.

MUSIC SHOWCASE The annual Music Showcase held in Elder Hall, University of Adelaide on Wednesday 30 August was a spectacular success again in 2017. The quality and professionalism demonstrated by all the performers was admirable. It was a spectacular exhibition of talent, dedication and perseverance teamed with energy and passion. The audience enjoyed performances from the school’s Big Band, String Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Choir and Concert Band, and the variety of repertoire performed was drawn from a range of cultures and musical styles.

Stage 2 percussion student Ryan Grunwald presented an exceptional marimba solo that demonstrated his remarkably mature levels of musicality and technique. Many thanks to Mr Steve Reece, Mr Nisan Tuazon and the instrumental staff who teach, accompany and direct our young instrumentalists in these premier ensembles. Thank you also to the school staff that volunteer to supervise students and provide front-of-house and backstage support, the students, parents and other supporters of Music. We look forward to presenting another great Music Showcase in 2018.

“Thank you for a wonderful evening. You have such a talented group of students and it was great to hear from the year 12 students how significant the teachers and music program has been to them. I'm always impressed by the enjoyable and varied selection of pieces presented. Looking forward to next year.”

“It was amazing. It just seems to get better every year!”

YEAR 9/10 LIFT RUBBISH AND RECYCLING INVESTIGATION Did you notice how clean the school yard and oval was at the end of Term 3? During this time, the Year 9/10 LIFT class investigated the amount of rubbish collected at the school and how much of it was recycled correctly. To start the investigation the class invited Malinda Roberts who is the Waste and Recycling Education Support Officer at the Onkaparinga Council to come and speak to the class about the correct use of bins in the council area and how to recycle. Did you know that in the Onkaparinga Council Area? • Shredded paper and tissues must be disposed of in the green

organics bin. • Hard plastics, plastic which can’t be crumbled with your

hand, go into the yellow bin. • Soft plastics, plastic which can be crumbled with your hand,

and foam goes into the red bin. • Empty aerosol containers go into the yellow bin • Containers don’t need to be rinsed before placing them in

the recycling bin. • If you have old paint tins contact the council for options to

dispose of them. Over 40 staff members and students were surveyed about their knowledge on recycling and the above facts were ones that many people got wrong. The class then conducted three rubbish audits around the school and found that soft plastics including glad wrap and small chip packets contributed 52% to 65% of the rubbish not put in the bin at break times. Hard plastics including straws was the second highest. Some soft plastics can be recycled by putting them in the bag collection bin at Coles and hard plastics should be put in the yellow recycling bins. Posters were then designed to put next to bins to explain what type of rubbish goes into each bin. Students also used rubbish collected to produce artwork to promote the concept of reusing and recycling, instead of throwing away items they can be used to produce excellent pieces of art. To conclude the investigation the Onkaparinga Council Education Support Officers returned to the school to help the class conduct a whole school audit investigating what the school community put into the bins each day and what could have been recycled. Over 45 large bags of rubbish were collected overnight and sorted, weighed and counted the next day by the Year 9/10 LIFT class. A report will soon be collated by the Onkaparinga Council and will be presented to the school. Findings so far indicated that many 10 cent recyclable cans/bottles were going to landfill, zip lock bags outnumbered other sources of rubbish and that paper was rarely put into recycling bins provided by the school.

2017 SNOW TRIP TO FALLS CREEK Monday morning on August 7 at 8.55am Falls Creek at the top of the mountain in a slight blizzard, just outside of Cloud 9 a huddle of our ski Instructors gather in conversation.

v Me- “……how good is this snow and how does it compare with the snow in Canada?” v Instructor from Canada- “it’s very similar just not quite as dry”

This short conversation highlighted the both the quantity and quality of the snow that we were lucky to get in our week between August 5 to 12. Approximately 150cm, with nearly a metres in two days on our arrival which is often unheard of in Australia! They extended the season past the normal October long weekend due to one of the biggest seasons ever!

The physical preparation for our trip started at the end of Term 1 with some Fitness Testing. This was followed with weekly Circuit Training sessions and some Hub Gym Fitness sessions with an Instructor over Term 2 and 3. Also, students were expected to do some fitness preparation at home. Some might say we still did not do enough, as it is always going to be a challenging week in the snow- physically, mentally, sometimes socially, and it was for all!

We had regular lunchtime meetings over this period to communicate and inform students about the alpine environment, snow safety, expectations and their overall preparation. A Parent and Student information evening was held in early Term 2 to assist this.

We were lucky to arrive at Falls Creek mid- morning, with the snow gently falling, as other later bus trips were stuck down or half way up the mountain due to snow blocking the roads! The week ahead looked very promising!

The majority of the group enjoyed a full packed week of fun in the snow developing their boarding/skiing, taking in the ‘Alpine’ atmosphere complemented by Après ski activities, including Village Markets and marshmallow roasting, Night skiing- under lights, meeting Pete the Snow Dragon, the amazing Falls Creek Night Show and Firework display. What a week!

Unfortunately, some struggled with a combination of illness, injury and fatigue taking hold, myself included, but still managed to improve, learn the ‘Alpine’ living and have some fun in the snow!

Students resilience was tested from the outset and the first couple of days presented the challenges of navigating the new environment, learning to stay upright, sharing a room, walking and carrying poles, skis, boots and boards around in the snow- no one to give a lift or a hand, just all walking in the snow!

I always find that the mountains are amazing and majestic, with conditions ever changing throughout the week from blizzard and windy, to calm and ‘whiteout’- no visibility to clear blue sunny skies, with fresh powdery flakes of snow

that make no sound as you skim, carve or slide, depending on your ability, down the slopes. Coping with these variables is always the challenge, and we did well!

Thank you to all students for smiling, persevering and contributing in making this trip both successful and memorable. Thank you to all staff back at school for their support.

A special thank you to my band of hard working staff in preparing the students and especially on the mountain 24/7. Staff who attended the Snow Trip included Leigh Rayner, Rebecca Jackson, Jayne Andrews, Samantha Grigoul, Narelle Day and Fraser Howard. Dave McCulloch, Snow Trip Coordinator

YEAR 12 DRAMA PRODUCTION A funny, moving and realistic human drama, Between These Lines, written by Michael Butler and directed by Jayne Andrews, followed the stories of a range of characters as their lives intersected with both humorous and far-reaching consequences, proving that the simplest actions can have the greatest impact.

Taking place all within one day, the play contained the many phases of life: family life, school life, pre-school, married life, mid-life, and old age. A snapshot of human experience. The title, Between These Lines, suggests that there are many other threads or lines or stories that could have been included. The play examined the way in which people’s lives are interconnected, and the way we affect each other knowingly and without realising. The way we treat each other then has an influence on how the future unfolds. As do the choices that we individually make. That is the message that, as a class, we chose to share with our audiences this year. We write our own futures, and those of others, yet we are also subject to things beyond our control. These are the things that form the ‘plot’ of the human story.

Producing Between These Lines took the SACE Stage 1 and 2 Drama class just over 13 weeks, nine after school rehearsals, two school holiday rehearsals, and four Sunday rehearsals. With an article in the Southern Time Messenger, and a great publicity campaign by Louise Weekley, we experienced two fantastic evening shows and received fantastic audience response. Featuring sound design by Daniel Penberthy, and set design by Bek Sarre and Katia Rawlings, the play was both visually and orally exciting. Our hard work resulted in not just a brilliant performance from all students involved, but in a strong and supportive bond between the members of our ensemble.

SPACE MISSION To coincide with the 68th Annual International Astronautical Congress (IAC) being held in Adelaide this year, the Schools Space Mission was developed to give students the opportunity to design an experiment with the potential to be sent up to the International Space Station. Six students from Aberfoyle Park High School, ranging from Year 8 to 11, have been working over Term 2 and 3 to create, refine and develop a viable experiment entitled ‘Space Potatoes’. The group wanted to test how food – in particular potatoes - spoiled in the space environment. This has implications for food storage in a growing population with increasing food demands, in addition to storing food for future manned space missions.

The talented group of students presented at the IAC and received a lot of attention, with industry professionals giving valuable feedback on their design. Out of the 14 schools who have presented at the conference, six schools will be shortlisted to further test and develop their design. Shannyn Siemens and Jen Shinnick

YEAR 11 ENGLISH POETRY Congratulations to Annalise Timms Budding poets from all year levels were encouraged to submit original poems for this year’s SAETA Spring Poetry Festival. The festival encourages student to produce original poems with the potential for winning entries to be published in Opinion, the Spring Poetry Festival magazine.

From the student body, we received many impressive entries that showcased their creative writing abilities. Congratulations to 3rd Year Ignite student, Annalise Timms, who has had two of her poems published in the Spring Poetry Festival magazine. This is a significant achievement, and we are proud to share one of her selected poems below:

Everything is Grey It was the colour of her stormy eyes when you fell in love with her, the clouds when you took her on a date but the weather ruined it (although even years later she would still say it was perfect).

It was the colour of the dress she wore when you took her out to dinner, and the scarf that tickled your neck when you kissed her.

It was the colour of the couch that you made love on for the first time. It was the colour of the laptop you used to illegally watch movies in bed. It was the colour of the track pants you both changed into after you got drenched by the rain, and the smoke that billowed from the kitchen when you tried to cook her dinner.

It was the colour of the cement path you walked along together every Sunday, the rocky mountains you hiked through to get that perfect photo for her Instagram. The colour of the car that took you on adventures to McDonald's together, and the hoodie that used to be yours but she took because it smelled like you.

It was the colour of the camera that you captured your memories with. It was the colour of the pebbles that you skimmed along the lake where you asked her to marry you, The colour of the curtains that you hated, but let her buy because she loved them, The colour of the tie you wore on the day you both said 'I do'.

The colour of the wall in the study that you painted together (and ended up painting each other), and the cat fur that initially annoyed you but, much to her triumph, became a comfort. It was the colour of the stillborn child that shattered you both, and the bags that were under her eyes for months afterwards.

It was the colour of the suitcase you left with when things got heated, but also the pavers on the driveway you'd walk back up with flowers and chocolates to apologise, and the bed where you'd 'make it up to her'. It was the colour of the office where you wasted away your years; the colour of your desk, your chair, your computer.

It was the colour of her hair as she grew old, It was the colour of your hair as you grew old with her. It was the colour of the dust that settled while you stayed by her bed side in the hospital, and the colour of her skin as you said goodbye. Rebecca Smitran, English Teacher

CONCEPT TO CREATION: SA POWER DRONE CHALLENGE The SA Power Drone Challenge took place on Wednesday 20 September at SA Power in Angle Vale. Students from a range of schools competed in this challenge where they are required to find various markers through a drone with an attached camera.

Four students from Aberfoyle Park High School participated after working hard throughout Term 3 to develop skills in drone piloting and photography.

Well done to Ronan Bolton, Harrison Joseph, Tyler Read and Ashton Chandler who committed to a significant amount of their time in Term 3 to this program and their efforts at the challenge.

Also a big thank you to Ms Samantha Griguol for accompanying the students to this event. Jarrod Chave, Assistant Principal (STEM)

CANBERRA 2018 The Senior School Leadership Team have organised an excursion to Canberra for June 2018.This invitation is extended to all Year 11 Students who will be undertaking SACE Stage 1 in 2018. All students who attend this excursion will be eligible to undertake and complete an Integrated Studies unit with a cross curricula focus. This will allow them the opportunity to gain an additional 10 SACE Credits. An excursion of this nature is very rewarding as it allows students to engage in various learning activities beyond the classroom. The value of the excursion has benefits for all students and include personal development, time management and organisational skills. Often new friendship groups are formed and students support and care for each other increasingly becomes more evident. Experience in running such an excursion have shown Student’s awareness and interest in learning and acquiring new knowledge increases and they appear to have a better sense of their own personal direction and pathway. Some of the venues that will be visited include the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, National Museum, National Art Gallery and the High Court of Australia. Additional highlights include a night tour of the Botanical Gardens and Telstra Tower as well as the very popular Questacon which has four levels of advanced interactive science activities and a ferry cruise over Lake Burley Griffin. Accommodation is very comfortable en-suited cabin style with approximately four students per cabin. No personal bedding is required.

A member of the Executive Team will accompany the supervising teachers on the tour. Please find attached a full itinerary for the week which more fully details all the events and attractions

The cost will be approximately $830.00 per student. This cost includes all travel, food, accommodation and entrance fees to the various venues. The only cost to the student will be their own personal spending money. As we have a limited number of seating on the bus we ask that students who are interested in being part of this very exciting excursion secure a seat with a preliminary $50.00 deposit (non-refundable) payable to the Finance Office by Tuesday 31 October. Students will have the ability to pay of the remainder of the cost of this trip by regular instalments by May 2018.
