Go 4th and Celebrate!

Celebrate Independence Day with the Star Spangled Classic in Bishop Park. Enjoy a children’s parade, family games, food, music, and of course, a fabulous fireworks display at nightfall.

Little patriots, ages 10 and younger, are invited to decorate their bicycles, tricycles and other non-motorized modes of transportation in the spirit of the holiday and “parade” through Bishop Park on the walking paths.

The event kicks off at 6:00 pm , wth the fun continuing until 10:00! Mark your calendar now to be part of one of Athens’ most popular community events.

The Georgia Recreation and Park Association has recognized the Athens- Clarke County Leisure Services Department with the “Agency Award” in the population category of 80,001 to 150,001.

The award recognizes outstanding accomplishments and programs during the past year. This is the sixth time in the past eight years that the Department has been so honored. The award was presented at the group’s annual conference.

Lyndon House Arts Center was recognized with the Therapeutic Innovative Program Award for “Celebrating the Artwork of Lois Curtis;” Arts and Humanities Award for the “Community” exhibition; and Publication Award for “The Mystique of the Automobile Event Catalog.”

38th Juried Exhibition The exhibition showcases a wealth of Athens area talent. Summer Dance Program registration takes place Saturday, April 6, from 9:00 a.m. - noon for ACC residents. Registration for non-residents begins Wednesday, April 10. Registration continues Monday-Thursday from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. until Friday, April 26. Registration will be from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. starting Monday, April 29 and continues until classes are full.

Registration must be made by the parent or legal guardian. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis and held at East Athens Educational Dance Center, 390 McKinley Drive. Birth certificate is required to register children six years of age.

Mandatory OrientationAll families are required to attend orientation Wednesday, May 15 at 5:00 p.m. Failure to attend will result in the student’s registration being cancelled.

Summer Dance Intensive 1:Physical Fitness Program (Group 1 & Group 2) No dance training is required for par-ticipants. The main objective is to offer one week of Hip Hop, Step Dance, Line Dance, and creative movement classes that will entertain participants while developing coordination, and rhythm. Summer Dance Intensive 7Tap Program (Group 1 & Group 2)Students must be familiar with basic tap steps such as the shuffle, flap, ball change, pull back, and riff. Students will learn a variety of tap rhythms ranging in Broadway tap, rhythm tap, and hoofing. Emphasis on learning the history of tap. Warm-ups will consist of the Horton Technique using laterals, flat back positions, lunges, deep plies, and drop and recover for strength and balance. On the last day of camp, families will be invited to watch a modern demonstration given by the students. Students will learn interpretive and expressive movements to music ranging in contem-porary gospel, hip hop gospel, and old spirituals. No religious teachings in this camp. On the last day of camp, families

Summer Dance ProjectStudents are admitted into Summer Dance Project by recommendation of the EAEDC Teaching Staff. Students from other dance schools need to bring a recommendation from their school. The required audition may be scheduled by calling 706-613-3624. (Students who are not intending to return for Fall Quarter classes are ineligible to participate in any works-in-progress to be presented in the annual dance production.) Class is limited to 20 students. New students over the age of 15 are not accepted. Students over the age of 15 must be currently enrolled in our Accelerated Program.

Celebrate your birthday with the ACC Leisure Services Department! The gymnastics parties at Bishop Park consist of one-hour of exciting gymnastics challenges and 30 minutes in one of the party areas. Hike to the New Bridge

Join Sandy Creek Park staff for a hike to the beautiful new Ellen R. Jordan Bridge at the north end of the park. The hike is approximately five miles, and departs from and returns to the park’s boat ramp parking lot. This scenic hike covers moderate terrain. Registration Fees:Fees are due at the time of registration. Checks should be made payable to “Athens-Clarke County.”

Refund Policy:• If a class or program is canceled due to insufficient

enrollment or other reason, ACC Leisure Services will issue a full refund to all registered individuals.

• No refunds will be granted after the start of the program or class. Collected fees of less than $5 will not be refunded (unless the department cancels the program or class).

• Refund requests must be received no less than seven (7) business days prior to the first day of class or program.

• Refunds will be assessed a 25% administrative fee.

• After the seven (7) day deadline, refunds will not be granted without a written medical excuse from a licensed physician.

ScholarshipsAny Athens-Clarke County resident under the age of 18 is eligible for consideration for a scholarship. A list of required documents to determine scholarship eligibility is available by calling 706-613-3800 or at www.athensclarkecounty.com/scholarships Scholarships do not cover admission, entrance, field trips, rental fees, or adult programs.

Parents must apply for a scholarship prior to the day of program registration. All scholarships expire June 30 and must be renewed.

Smoking PolicySec. 4-3-2. Smoking Prohibited in Athens-Clarke County Facilities. Smoking shall be prohibited in all enclosed facilities of, including buildings owned, leased, operated by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County. Smoking shall be prohibited within the boundaries of any park, youth sports complex, or recreation area owned, leased, or operated by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County, including any open area within such park, youth sports complex, or recreation area.
