Gospel: Luke 3: 10-18 The crowds asked John the Baptist, “What should we do?” He said to them in reply, “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He answered them, “Stop collecting more than what is prescribed.” Sol-diers also asked him, “And what is it that we should do?” He told them, “Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages.” Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people. También acudían a él los publica-nos para que los bautizara, y le preguntaban: “Maestro, ¿qué tenemos que hacer nosotros?” Él les decía: “No cobren más de lo establecido”. Unos soldados le preguntaron: “Y noso-tros, ¿qué tenemos que hacer?” Él les dijo: “No extorsionen a nadie, ni denuncien a nadie falsamente, sino conténtense con su salario”. Como el pueblo estaba en expectación y todos pensaban que quizá Juan era el Mesías, Juan los sacó de dudas, diciéndoles: “Es cierto que yo bautizo con agua, pero ya viene otro más poderoso que yo, a quien no merezco desatarle las correas de sus sandalias. Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego. Él tiene el bieldo en la mano para separar el trigo de la paja; guardará el trigo en su grane-ro y quemará la paja en un fuego que no se extingue”. REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL / SUNDAY REFLECTION LA ALEGRÍA DEL VISITANTE
Un anuncio de Ikea en España tenía un estribillo pega-dizo y simpático, decía “donde caben dos, caben tres”; y se veía a gente alegremente haciendo sitio pa-ra una persona más en su pequeño apartamento o casa. Lo bonito era que se hacía alegre-mente y no como una imposición. Donde caben dos, caben tres es algo que decimos fácilmente cuando vamos a tener una visita o cuando una familia espera a un nuevo miembro con alegría y esperanza. Sabemos bien que tal visita, o tal nuevo miembro, también implica incomodidades y sacrifi-cios; pero se hacen con alegría y producen más alegría. Algo así, pero mucho más fuer-te, es el mensaje que se nos da hoy.
A quienes están dispuestos a compartir todo lo que tienen, sabiendo que en realidad no es suyo, se les ofrece una alegría abundante y durade-ra, porque, al compartir, reciben la presencia de Dios en sus vidas. Donde caben dos y tres, cabe Dios y eso es causa de alegría y de salvación. No nos salvaremos ni haremos un camino llano al Señor guardando para nosotros mismos y ahorrándonos las molestias de hacer espacio para los demás y compartir. Así lo único que conseguiremos será que nadie venga a vernos y a es-tar con nosotros, y que nuestra vida sea mucho más pobre. La conversión que pide el Señor para poder llegar en esta Navidad es una conversión que exige sacrificio y esfuerzo y compromiso, incluso público, pe-ro que ofrece toda la alegría de la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas.
Para la Reflexión ¿Me deprimo algunas veces pensando en las dificulta-des económicas y en lo poco que tengo? ¿He experi-mentado alguna vez la alegría de verme rodeado de gente querida aunque eso me supusiera hacer algún esfuerzo o sacrificio? ¿De qué maneras veo que llega Dios a mi vida? ¿Necesito dinero para eso?
JOY FROM THE VISITOR
An Ikea advertisement in Spain had a very catchy and amusing phrase. It said “where there is room for two, three can it.” And you would watch people gladly mak-ing room to receive another person in their small apart-
ment or home. The nice thing is that they were doing it with joy and not as an imposition. Where there is room for two, we can accom-modate three is something we readily say when we are expecting a visitor or when the family prepares to welcome a new member with joy and hope. We know well that receiving this visi-tor or family member can imply discomforts or sacrifices, but it is done with pleasure and pro-duces an even greater happiness. The message we receive today is somewhat similar to this, although much more powerful.
For those willing to share everything they have, knowing in reality that it is not theirs, they are offered abundant and everlasting happiness because in sharing they receive the presence of God in their lives. Where there is room for two, there is room for three, and room for God; and this is a reason for joy and salvation. We will not be saved, nor can we make a smooth way for the Lord by keeping to ourselves and refusing to make room for others and share. The only thing we achieve with this attitude is that no one will come to see us or want to spend time with us, making our life much poorer. The type of conversion the Lord is asking for is one that allows him to arrive this Christmas. It is a conversion that de-mands sacrifice, effort and commitment, even publicly, but it offers all the happiness of having the presence of God in our lives.
For Reflection Do I sometimes become depressed thinking about eco-nomic difficulties and what few things I have? Have I ever experienced the joy of seeing myself surrounded by lov-ing people even if it meant additional effort or sacrifice? In what ways do I see God coming into my life? Do I need money for this?
GAUDETE WEEK
Our week begins with “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. It comes from the first word of the Entrance antiphon on Sunday. The spirit of joy that begins this week comes from the words of Paul, “The Lord is near.” This joyful spirit is marked by the third candle of our Advent wreath, which is rose colored, and the rose colored vestments often used at the Eucha‐rist. The second part of Advent begins on December 17th each year ‐ this year, in 2015, it is Thursday of the Third Week of Ad‐vent. For the last eight days before Christmas, the plan of the readings changes. The first readings are still from the prophe‐sies, but now the gospels are from the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke. We read the stories of faithful women and men who prepared the way for our salvation. We enter into the story of how Jesus' life began. These stories are filled with hints of what his life will mean for us. Faith and generosity overcome impossibility. Poverty and persecution reveal glory.
Preparing our Hearts and asking for Grace We prepare this week by feeling the joy. We move through this week feeling a part of the waiting world that rejoices
because our longing has prepared us to believe the reign of God is close at hand. And so we consciously ask: Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope which his presence will bestow.

Posadas… ¿eucarísticas?
Son las 7:00 p.m. en Chicago, en diciembre. el clima está hela‐do. Mientras tiemblo del frío, me uno a la gente que se aglo‐mera en la esquina. Entre ellos se encuentra Carlitos, un niño de 6 o 7 años que porta una luminaria. Vamos a iniciar la Posa‐da. Como soy de ecuador, no sé mucho sobre las Posadas, que son principalmente una tradición mexicana. Aun así, mientras más participo de ellas, más me doy cuenta de que las Posadas son eucarísticas. Pensemos en Carlitos. Él está creciendo en medio de pandillas, familias rotas, pobreza y un sistema de escuelas públicas que deja mucho que desear. Estadísticamen‐te, él está destinado al fracaso. Va a necesitar mucho valor, mentores y todos los recursos proactivos disponibles, para ayudarlo a salir de ese círculo de pobreza en el que está atrapado. Ahora, sin embargo, es tiempo de la Posada; así es que ahí está, llevan‐do la luminaria con orgullo y responsabilidad. Su luminaria es un palo de escoba con una vela en la punta, protegida en un marco de plástico. En la Posada, la luminaria representa la estrella de Belén que guía a la gente hacia el Niño Je‐sús. Carlitos nos está guiando hacia el Niño Je‐sús. Mientras camino con los parroquianos y miro alrededor, veo que todos estamos caminado, todos tenemos frío. Esta‐mos buscando posada, un lugar para pasar la noche, como lo hicieron María y José en Belén. Todos estamos buscando aquel lugar, aquella paz y aquella fuerza para seguir adelante en la vida; y esta noche Carlitos nos está guiando.
Las Posadas, según la escritora Marcela Hede, son una recrea‐ción del peregrinaje de María y José en búsqueda de un lugar para pasar la noche. Las Posadas se originaron en México, probablemente en el siglo XVI, cuando los misioneros francis‐canos encontraron cómo recrear de manera experiencial el viaje de los Peregrinos Santos; ellos son pobres, indigentes, inmigrantes y pronto van a tener un hijo. Estadísticamente ellos también están destinados al fracaso; ¿pero, lo están? María, José y el Bebé Jesús a punto de nacer encuentran un lugar, una posada, en un establo. Precisamente allí nace el Hijo de Dios, que se encarna y habita entre su gente incluso en medio de la adversidad. Un sentido de esperanza nos embar‐ga y nos recuerda que todo va a estar bien, cuando entramos a la casa o al salón parroquial: adentro está abrigado, oliendo a chocolate caliente (o champurrado) y pan dulce, y decorado con luces de Navidad brillantes y una piñata. Una vez adentro, rezamos, partimos el pan, jugamos y cantamos, y recordamos la razón por la que estamos allí: Jesús se convierte en uno de nosotros. Mateo 18:20 dice que cuando dos o tres se reúnen en el nombre de Jesús, allí está el Señor, haciendo que ese momento sea eucarístico. Cuando nos reunimos para la Posa‐da, Jesús está entre nosotros haciendo que ese sencillo mo‐mento se convierta en un encuentro eucarístico.
Por los nueve días de las Posadas, Carlitos ha portado la lumi‐naria con mucho amor y devoción. Viviendo en un barrio po‐bre y violento, Carlitos encuentra esperanza, alegría y sentido de la vida gracias a devociones como las Posadas. Quién sabe; tal vez esta costumbre pueda ser uno de esos recursos proac‐tivos que lo va a ayudar a salir de las estadísticas de las cuales Carlitos es parte… por ahora.

It is 7:00 p.m. in Chicago, in December. The weather is freez‐ing. As I shiver with cold, I join the people gathering at the corner of Ashland Avenue and 44th Street. Among them is Carlitos, a 6 or 7‐year old boy carrying a luminaria (festival lamp). We are going to start the Posada. Since I am from Ecua‐dor, I must confess that I don’t know much about the Posa‐das, which mainly are a Mexican tradition. Yet, the more I par‐ticipate in them, the more I come to realize that Posadas are Eucharistic. Let’s think about Carlitos. He is growing in the middle of crossfires related to gangs, broken families, pov‐erty, and a system of public schools that leaves much to be desired. Statistically, he is doomed to failure. He will need
much courage, mentors, and all the proactive resources available, to help him get out of this cycle of poverty in which he is trapped. But now it is Posada time; so there he is, carrying a luminaria with pride and responsibility. His lumi‐naria is a broom stick with a candle in the tip, protected by a plastic frame. In the Posada, the luminaria represents the star of Bethlehem that guides people to Baby Jesus. Carlitos is leading
us toward Baby Jesus. As I walk with the parishioners, I look around and see young and old, rich and poor, students and dropouts, gang members, people still wearing their school or work uniforms, etc. All of us are walking. All of us are cold. We are looking for posada, a place to spend the night, as Mary and Joseph did in Bethlehem. All of us are looking for that place, that peace, and that strength to move forward in life; and tonight Carlitos is leading us.
Posadas, according to writer Marcela Hede, is a reenactment of the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph looking for a place to spend the night. Posadas originated in Mexico, probably in the 16th century, when the Franciscan Missionaries found an experiential way to recreate the journey of the Holy Pilgrims; they are poor, homeless, immigrants and they will soon have a child. Statistically they are also doomed to failure; but, are they? Mary, Joseph, and soon to be born Baby Jesus find lodg‐ing, a Posada, in a stable. Precisely there is born the Son of God, who incarnates and dwells among his people even in the midst of adversity; and this is the heart, this is what Posadas are about. A sense of hope takes over us and reminds us that things will be fine as soon as we enter the house or the parish hall: inside is warm, smelling like hot chocolate (or champur‐rado) and sweet bread, and decorated with bright Christmas lights and a piñata. Once inside, we pray, we break bread, we play and sing, and we remember the reason why we are there: Jesus becomes one of us. Matthew 18:20 says that when two or three are gathered in the name of Jesus, the Lord is there, making that moment Eucharistic. When we gather for the Posada, Jesus is among us turning that simple moment into a Eucharistic encounter, thus, Posadas are Eucharistic.
Through the nine days of Posadas, Carlitos has carried the luminaria with much love and devotion. Living in a violent and poor neighborhood, Carlitos finds hope, joy, and meaning thanks to devotions such as Posadas. Who knows; perhaps this costume could be one of those proactive resources that will help him get out of the statistics of which Carlitos is part... for now.
