From Fr. Joe In both the 1st Reading (Ezek 18:25-28) and the Gospel (Matt 21:28-32) for this 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time we hear about people changing their ways. In the Gospel parable of the two sons deciding to work – or not – in the vineyard at their father’s order, it can seem like what happened was a mere changing of the sons’ minds. But what really happens in the parable, and in the instances referred to in the 1st Reading (Ezek 18:26-27), is a change of heart, a conversion – changing one’s mind evidenced by one’s deeds, (“someone virtuous turns away from virtue to commit iniquity” [i.e evil, immorality], or someone “turns from the wickedness he has committed, and does what is right and just” . That change of heart – that conversion – can go both ways and has very real consequences (“he must die” or “he shall preserve his life”, again Ezek 18:26-27).
When Jesus – who frequently talked about his Heavenly Father’s will and was all about doing the Father’s will – asked the chief priests and elders of the people, “Which of the two [sons] did his father’s will?” (Matt 21:31), their reply indicated the son who at first said he wouldn’t go work in the vineyard, but then ended up doing so. A change of heart – a conversion – for the good is not simply a matter of saying the right words, but of doing what is right. Of course consistency in always doing ‘good’ is best, but if you are going to make a change (and who of us has not needed to make a change in our lives?) let it be in the direction of what is right and just. And certainly being persons of integrity – that what we say aligns with what we do – is a virtuous way to live. As we hear in this Sunday’s scriptures, while it matters what you said or did before (whether it be a few moments or even years before), it is more important what you do now and from now on. As I’ve told people in the confessional, even though we wish we could, we can’t change history – we can’t go back and undo what we’ve done or didn’t do. However, from this point on we can live the way we are supposed to. And since none of us can be assured of how much ‘future’ we have in this life, do and keep doing what is right and just here and now. Don’t go backwards.
We live in interesting times – which can be a nice way of saying confusing or uncertain times. Add in that this is an election year and – whew – these are INTERESTING times! As Catholics it is our duty to follow our conscience and vote accordingly. There are too many people however, who simply equate that as meaning following what they think is right. What often gets missed is that as Catholics we have a duty to have a well-formed conscience – one that leads us to what is true, right, and just. Q. How do we know what that is, and where can we go to find out, especially when we hear so many different ideas and interpretations of things? A. Go to the Church and find out what it says and what its teachings are. Wait a minute – that seems a pretty convenient way for the Church to meddle in my right to make up my own mind. Well, think of this – Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life; and the Church is the Mystical Body of Christ which is guided by the Holy Spirit. You can’t go wrong with that kind of guidance.
Remember back on the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 23rd,
when Jesus asked his disciples—and all of us— “who do you say that I
am?” After Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God” (Matt 16:15-16), Jesus said Peter was blessed not because he
had his own answer, but because he had the correct answer! While
it is good for everyone to ponder and reflect about who Jesus is in
their life, it is most important to know the truth of who Jesus is. The
truth of Jesus being “the Christ, the Son of the living God” is not
dependent on one’s feelings or personal belief, or agreement, or
even knowing about him. It is simply true. And then Jesus went on
to say, “you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and
the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it”, and “I will
give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on
earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall
be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16: 18-19). That “church” Jesus
built upon Peter has been, and always will be, the Catholic Church.
Jesus also made sure there would be a way to guide and sustain his
church. So, when we are seeking answers regarding faith and truth,
we should turn to the Catholic Church.
An issue of truth which our country is currently facing – and has
since 1973, but particularly every time there are elections on the
national and/or state levels, like this year – is not just the intrinsic
evil of abortion (the deliberate killing of an innocent unborn human being), but that it is presently legally protected – and sometimes
shamefully celebrated as such. Though not denying the importance
of other concerns, Pope Francis stated, "because if you're not alive
you can't do anything else", in explaining why life is the number
one, most important (i.e. preeminent) issue. (quote taken from a Catholic News Service Jan. 16, 2020 report.) This truth doesn’t
depend on personal feelings or personal belief, or whether someone
agrees with it or not. It is simply true. As the political rhetoric of
the various 2020 pre-election campaigns increases, exciting
peoples’ emotions with sometimes confusing messages about
what is true, we can – and should – turn to the Catholic Church
and its teachings for clarity.
Being pro-life (particularly anti-abortion) is not limited to
Catholics, but it is a very “Catholic” position, and has been from the
very beginnings of the Church. While there can, and will be,
differences regarding how best to protect other aspects and stages
of human life, it is unacceptable and impossible for a faithful
practicing Catholic to in any way support the intrinsic moral evil of
abortion. And this truth does not depend on personal feelings, belief, or agreement.
Whatever political persuasion you are, I encourage you to watch
(listen to) a homily that was given four years ago leading up to the
last presidential election. Yes, it’s four years old – but oh, still so
relevant – and so well presented. Here is the link:

Catholic Way Bible Study All Saints Parish
“Therefore, since God in his mercy has given us this ministry, we never give up.” 1 Corinthians 4:1 (NLT)
We have not given up on Bible study! It will be very different this year because of restrictions we must observe, but Catholic Way Bible
Study (CWBS) will be available to anyone interested, including those outside our parish. Our projected start date is October 19.
What We are Studying
This year we will do a 22-week study of Acts of the Apostles. “Also known as the Gospel of the Holy Spirit, Acts is the exciting adventure
of the birth of the Church. Meet Peter, John and Paul, apostles used by the Lord to spread the faith from Jerusalem through Samaria,
Antioch, Asia...Rome and the ends of the earth.” (from www.cwbs.org) Materials include homework question sheets for each week of
lessons, vocabulary pages to be used for taking lecture notes, and maps and diagrams.
Bible Study During COVID-19
In charity to those most vulnerable to COVID-19, and to obey guidelines put in place to limit its spread, CWBS will NOT include weekly
large-group meetings on St. Anne’s campus. Instead, we suggest a 3-part process where members can participate in a way that is com-
fortable and safe for them: Study, Connect, and Review.
STUDY - Complete the weekly study questions (homework) on your own. As in the past, doing your weekly lesson is a chance to engage
with God’s Word, deepen your faith and grow in your knowledge of Scripture.
CONNECT - We encourage you to participate in a weekly Connection Group (CG) with one or more All Saints CWBS members to discuss
the homework. Sharing answers and listening to others builds us all up as members of Christ’s Body. CGs will meet in whatever
way the group chooses - in person, via phone, or by video conferencing. Meeting days/times are up to you, whenever it works best
for your CG. The All Saints CWBS Coordinators can help you get in touch with a group that meets your needs. Being part of a CG is
optional, but we think it is the best part of CWBS!
REVIEW - On your own or with friends, review the pre-recorded lecture by CWBS Teaching Leader Lavinia Spirito for a deeper level of
understanding of the lesson. We will post links to stream the lecture video right to your smartphone or computer. A DVD (video)
and CD (audio) version will also be available to check out at the parish office. We ask that the DVD and CD versions be used only by
those who cannot do streaming. Streaming support will be available. Details about that will be included with your lesson packet.
Two Ways to Register
Interested in being part of our exciting study of Acts this year? There are two easy ways to register:
Visit our parish website (www.alpenacatholics.org) and look for the CWBS registration link to complete an easy online form...OR…
Call the Parish Office at 989-354-3019 if you do not have access to the internet.
The study is offered this year at no cost to participants; however, donations are welcome to help defray the costs of preparing materi-
als and acquiring media.
Getting Your Study Materials
There will be many drive-thru opportunities to pick up your CWBS lesson packet at the Lockwood Street carport: after all Masses on
Oct. 3-4 and Oct. 10-11 and during Confessions on October 7 & 9 from 6-7 pm. Also, beginning Oct. 5, lesson packets may be picked up
at the parish office sliding window from 10 am to 2 pm.
